I really got into VNs after experiencing Cupid A Visual Novel. I also recently bought Visual Novel Maker as I love to write. I purchased this title at full price not knowing what to expect, but seeing the positive reviews. However, I cannot in good conscience rate this positively at the current asking price. There's just not enough content to justify the price in either the amount or the quality. The whole experience from beginning to end took me 37 minutes. Although, you could replay the game to get to the different endings ... alas, I felt no desire to do that. It's a story we've all heard before, the Salem Witch Trials. Town has a run of bad luck, then young girls are accused of witchcraft and then they start naming names of fellow witches and the whole town soon erupts in chaos. Probably best written by Arthur Miller in the Crucible. So there's good material to work with and I was not expecting an original idea. This VN takes from that story and makes it a murder mystery. A young girl's parents are murdered. She's missing. The Town has a plague killing several towns folk. People have started rumors of the family murdered being involved in witchcraft. You are tasked with finding this young girl who has already been found guilty by the towns folk. You are not so sure. However, we don't really get to know any of the characters. You are the protagonist. But who are you? Why do you care so much about finding out the truth? Why are you searching for answers alone all over town and around when all the other townspeople are out and about with pitchforks, ready to start a lynch mob? To progress the story forward, you really do just have to make sure you click on all the questions and then read the answers. You go to another area and rinse and repeat. This may be a great "game" device in a choose your own adventure type story, but this VN is really not that. It's really a guided novel that's mish-mashed the pages of the story by choosing this narrative form. There is no puzzle to solve. No missing clue to find. It's just make sure you've read all the dialogue choices in all the areas, then choose what to do at the end. Sometimes it's great to feel like a detective, when it's done right. It wasn't done right in this instance. Luckily, the story is very short and so it never feels like a chore. I liked the art. It was done very well. Original assets. The music was okay. I'm not sure what game engine was used, but I think it was TyranoBuilder as I think I saw a quick prompt during the start of the game. Digital Bento, Mr. Ho, is a very talented person no doubt. And I hate to give a negative review on his work as it's better than anything I could make as a total noob to making a game. Just the writing and direction for this experience were not there for me. There's a good game here worthy of $3.99, just not in its current form. Rate 4/10. Needs to be priced at .99 cents in its current form for me to recommend. Sorry. I know the dev worked hard on this game, but it's just not enough quality or quantity content. I don't expect Cupid VN good, but does need more to justify its current price.
Ugh. That's all I have to say. I went into this hoping to be pleasantly surprised. Not the case. I would refund this if I could. My advice to the developers: lower the price to 99 cents and then use your money to hire a proofreader for your next game. Pros: -nice art Cons: -poorly edited text plentiful with errors -not enough content to justify the price--even after it was lowered -easy to solve mystery that makes you wish you could just skip to the end -for something claiming to be a murder mystery, this was just way too linear. you might as well just call this a visual novel. not that there's enough content here to qualify for that either. Don't waste your money here.
A Salem Witch Trial: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On the outskirts of the town of Salem, a couple have been found dead at their farm! The farmer was struck by a heavy object, while his wife suffered from the same strange illness that has affected many other people in town. Are these brutal murders, or the work of a witch? That’s what you have to determine with the people of Salem. A Salem Witch Trial is a visual novel where the reader follows the perspective of one of the inhabitants of the town of Salem. As many of you know, the Town of Salem was famous for the trial of several people (mostly women) who were suspected of practising witchcraft! These trials started in February 1692 and ended in May 1693. The story starts in the thick of this era. Your character is an inhabitant of the town, and he is awakened in the middle of the night by a large mob that has gathering in the town square. From here, your character will be made aware of a rumour – that the daughter of the couple who was found dead at their farm is a witch, and you will be asked to be part of the search to find her. A map will be distributed with an initial eight locations to visit, and additional locations will be added as the story progresses. In each of the locations, your persona will meet a new character and ask questions about the so-called witch, as well as about the strange plague that has affected the food supplies and the people in the town. The plot is pretty easy to figure out but there are a couple of twists that might make you think otherwise. Each of the locations has very artistic images which reflect the era extremely well. What I appreciate in this game is that there are several suspects in regards to what is happening within the town. Towards the end of the game, your character will be asked if he found the witch, or if he found other information, the result of which will create different endings. The soundtrack is pretty good. I must say that the game is fairly short, taking around one hour to finish, or a little bit longer if you decide to find all the endings. I also found a few spelling mistakes here and there. Positives: ~~~~~~~ + Nice painted style of artwork + Interesting characters and story + Nice soundtrack + Achievements Negatives: ~~~~~~~~ - Short visual novel - No trading cards as yet. A short but enjoyable visual novel with beautiful artwork. 6/10 Key provided by developer/publisher for review purposes. Any opinions expressed are entirely my own! Witch Trial is a gothic murder mystery visual novel. And I really liked that eerie atmosphere which was skilfully created there due to pretty art and quite fitting music. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1545477940 Unfortunately, the game has a number of issues. I totally understand why it has so many negative reviews. For me personally immersion in that creepy atmosphere, strong emotions I experienced outweighed any negative moments but you should take into consideration all those flaws before buying it. From the very start I didn't like the poor choice of options. For example, you can't adjust the text speed or skipping is so inconvenient that I didn't use it at all. In general, the game was a bit laggy. Once I minimized all programs on my PC with windows key + D but when I returned to the game I found out that it had been skipping all that time :( And then I discovered how backlog looked. Sorry, but it made me laugh. The game is so dark and gloomy but the backlog is so bright, completely out of place. Also, my screenshots were without text which was a bit vexing. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1547960913 Beside technical issues the English translation is far from being perfect, it's understandable but has too many typos (mistakes?). Sometimes the character's name and the text didn't match. And when you have a row of options to choose from, sadly, it looks like we have to start from the very top because otherwise the story becomes a bit illogical and inconsistent. Oh, and what struck me–after starting the game I checked the gallery and all CGs were already presented there. I still don't know if it's some kind of a bug or, on the contrary, a new feature, and so if it's spoilerish or intriguing. Finally, maybe the most popular complaint is that the game is too short. I personally was quite ok with it, especially considering the low price. I've just thought why I even intend to make this review positive. You know, it was just a real pleasure to dive into that dark atmosphere. I really like the topic. It can be fiction, mere entertainment but one shouldn't forget that witch hunt is a real historical thing. All those stupid people bringing out their dumb beliefs made me so furious and sad at the same time, just to imagine how many innocent people were actually accused and executed because of such silly pretenses. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1545477973 Although I have to admit in the process of investigation, no matter how short it was, I still managed to sincerely fell for their primitive arguments that's how immersive the game really is. I wickedly enjoyed every bad ending. That's so twisted and wrong but I felt like they totally deserved their fate. But I still have conflicted feelings about that one 'happy' ending
when the witch was captured and killed and when all those misfortunes stopped.
I kinda hoped that common sense would prevail but... Dark times, dark emotions, dark decisions. I liked that experience. Despite all issues I'd still recommend the game. It was definitely worth playing it. But decide for yourself.

[th]Find more in a Reading Nook [/th]

a good Visual Novel game. can recommend it. the price of the game is alright.
A Salem Witch Trial is a very compelling visual novel for the price point. While short and relatively simple, it offers an incredibly well crafted murder mystery: A witch appears to be plaguing the small town of Salem, and it is your job to uncover the culprit to a grisly murder. There are six possible endings to A Salem Witch Trial. Admittedly, this game thoroughly duped me. Having 'figured out' who the culprit was relatively early on, I thought the resolution to the game obvious. I was wrong. Looking back, there are a multitude of unspoken details and clues that telegraph an ending that I would have never suspected. I really must commend the developer on how their ability to make a mystery so genuinely mysterious. The presentation is also excellent. The seemingly painted artwork is gorgeous, the soundtrack eerie and the resulting atmosphere as palpably creepy as it befits the game's setting, subject matter and time period. It's a shame that the game's font is as basic and anachronistic as it is, but this is a minor complaint. Where A Salem Witch Trial falters most is in its lack of polish. While generally well-written, the game suffers from typos, grammatical errors, incorrect tenses and missing words. There are also a few bugs: Occasionally, a speaking character's name will be incorrectly labelled as another's. As well as this, the 'true' ending features dialogue that would repeat itself 3-4 times before successfully moving on. While none of this game-breaking, it did some harm to my immersion within A Salem Witch Trial's otherwise compelling narrative. Ultimately, these issues are minor and easily patched. I would definitely recommend this game to fans of visual novels and enthusiasts of the murder mystery genre; this is certainly a good example of both. I believe the price small enough to justify the issues currently present, but recommend that anybody bothered by such things to wait for further updates.
I'm an avid consumer of story games. This one intrigued me, but alas fell entirely too short. I finished everything - including every achievement - in 47 minutes. There are no real choices. You run around town asking people the same questions. The 'mystery' is obvious - as in what endings are what/who you can blame. There are two points you can save at to make sure you don't have to dredge through the entire game again just to get the alternate endings (just picking ONE different choice), which makes replayability obselete. The writing is not bad at all. Visuals are good. But the story is bland, a lot of text is repeated, and the game is absurdly short. Not worth the price. I've seen better visual novels for free. Get it on sale, or just skip it. You're not missing anything.
I'm not sure how to feel about this one... 5/10 maybe. The art is pretty unique and good, and there's one or two decent music tracks. The story is a little bit too short for the price, and is also kind of weird. It is pretty insensitive given what in the real world happened in Salem. The biggest problem may lie in the program itself: It doesn't feel responsive, the skip functionality is hard to use (and seems glitchy), and the scene transition and ending are kind of dragging. Also, somehow the steam overlay does not work for me no matter what nw.js parameters I add to it... I don't actually like the ending, but that's not really a negative point I think.
A Salem Witch Trial is a somewhat good visual novel, but it is not awesome in the slightest. Firstly, to clarify, this game has nothing to do with the Salem witch trials of 1692. It does involve a double homicide taking place in Salem in 1692 where the culprit is thought to be a witch. Although the game's store page states that the player has to go through the evidence to find the murderer, there is little to no evidence directly linking anyone to the murder. Everything is taken from eyewitness accounts. From hearing their testimonies, any number of the story's suspicious characters could've been responsible. One downside is not being able to suspect of several people at the same time. I definitely suspected multiple people. Nothing is as simple as what was portrayed here. The true ending, while interesting, seemed way too far-fetched to me, especially for that time (1692 - over 300 years ago), but it was an engrossing ending. I was hoping for the story to be more engaging, but it seemed too linear and full of holes. The game was at times unresponsive and has numerous spelling/grammar errors, as well as often incorrectly labeling speech from one character as belonging to a different character. There are at most four dialogue choices for each character you interview, except when speaking to the suspected culprit. The dialogue itself is extremely basic, and the type of English that would have been spoken at the time of this story's period setting isn't used at all. Furthermore, from one of the images on this page, you can assume that someone's missing an eye, right? Well, there's more than one person missing an eye and/or talking about it, but the surrounding circumstances are left inconclusive. The game does feature fairly good hand-drawn animation, but it could still be better. The music sets the mood very well, but there isn't enough variation in it to really make the game shine. The same track plays over and over, which can be somewhat annoying, eventually sounding almost like that featured in alien documentaries. The story is interesting, but easily forgettable, and you end up feeling as if the experience was uneventful. I must give it a thumbs down despite the effort put into it. If you like VN's, wait until it's on sale. Both the story and game mechanics have to work in unison to provide a worthy experience. Otherwise, it crumbles fast.
