very very cool once you know how to play the game
Bought this game five years ago and just now completing the campaign. The learning curve is steep but once things clicked with mech customization, team composition, and ship economy, the game becomes really rewarding to play. The campaign story wasn't half bad and the battle scenarios they create for the campaign missions are decent.
American life sim. (getting fu#ked daily)
Not the table top but I fricken love it
xcom but mechs. mid voice acting and story. fun but repetitive gameplay. more mission variety, larger number of mechs fielded, battles with more than 2-3 factions present would be fun addition (not that 3 way fights have happened often anyways). After story is done, not much to do imo. havent bought DLC cuz they are over priced, but will see about getting them on sale. low replay value atm. Def buy the game on sale, its worth playing thru at least once. I think i got it for ~$10 and have logged 80 hours, so good deal.
perfection at it's finest
Fun
Having just wrapped up the main campaign for the first time—with a massive 723 hours already clocked in-game—I can safely say I’ve been missing out for years. As an augmented artist who writes a massive amount of music, an AAA ex-game dev (think survival genre), and a current indie dev working on a secret multimedia project, my daily life is a constant loop of bouncing audio and jumping between creative tasks. Because I am disabled and manage twice-exceptional ADHD (hence the deep-dive essay format, em dash use and AI structure for easy readability—I keep pace with the machine, not get it to do my job, just clean up my 2000+ mile-an-hour mind), I am usually running 7 to 8 things at once. When I'm not stalking targets or hunting headshots in DayZ, Arma Reforger, or The Forever Winter, I need a game that allows me to switch tasks without losing my creative momentum. BATTLETECH is exactly that vehicle. I’ve known about the FASA lore, the 90s simulators, and the classic tabletop genesis since childhood—growing up with a brother heavy into D&D, while I was a massive sci-fi addict collecting Star Trek RPGs. Yet, I never dug deep into BATTLETECH or touched MechWarrior until now. What a massive oversight. This isn't an FPS or an RTS; it’s a beautifully executed Turn-Based Strategy (TBS) masterclass published by Paradox and crafted by Harebrained Schemes. Having played Stellaris extensively, I had my eye on this for a while, and it absolutely delivers. What's Good Faithful Mech Design & Lore: The depth and aesthetic execution of the BattleMechs are incredibly faithful to the source material, retaining a gritty, industrial weight. Deep Combat Mechanics: There is an immense amount of mechanical meat to get your teeth into. Beyond armor vectors and heat positioning, there are layer-heavy systems like Electronic Warfare hidden deep in the mechanics for you to discover. Solid Expansion Content: The DLCs offer excellent value, introducing a great variety of planet biomes and atmosphere types that actively change how your heat sinks function, alongside fresh chassis and novel tactical mechanics. A Dope Soundtrack: As an audio guy, the soundscape and score hit all the right atmospheric notes to keep you locked completely in the zone. (Expect some electronic remixes down the line!) Why It's a 9/10 (And Not a Perfect 10) I’m notoriously hard to please, and after 700+ hours, a few minor friction points stand out: Heavy Reading Requirements: To truly absorb the deep lore, you have to read a lot of text. When I’m busy or multi-tasking, it can get a bit overwhelming, and I find myself skipping sections. I wish more of these lore drops were fully voice-acted—though, to be fair to the developers, that is a massive financial investment, so go easy on them. Endgame Scope: I lean toward massive scales, so I personally wish the star map was even larger with more robust endgame loops and massive deployment maps to push a veteran lance to its absolute limits. (Be aware, though, the community modding scene is huge; see the comments of this review for a brief breakdown). Map Repetition: Some maps get reused a little too frequently during procedural contracts (or maybe I just don't like it when the terrain makes the drops too punishing!). The Price to Value Ratio Unlike games like MechWarrior Online, where the free-to-play model can easily hook you for £750+ if you want all the content packs, BATTLETECH treats your wallet with respect. I picked up the Digital Deluxe Edition on sale for £28.89 (it sits at £41.99 full price). Keep an eye on the Steam sales, because the sheer amount of tactical runtime you get for that price is an absolute steal. Final Verdict: 9 / 10 Why the essay? As an ex/future game dev, I deeply value the architectural choices and polish that went into this project. The game is super fun, deeply relaxing, and incredibly accommodating for creators; I can just pick it up, put it down, and Alt-Tab back to work instantly. The developers deserve to be rewarded for this execution. If you want a rewarding tactical strategy game that respects your pacing and gives you total mechanical control, don't pass this one up. It has easily earned its permanent spot in my studio rotation. *see the comments for notes on the available mods as of June 2026—I hope the community finds this review useful* o7
