Buying a storage unit always feels like a gamble. Most of the time it's just piles of junk, but every now and then you find something that makes the whole trip worth it. Cleaning everything up and slowly uncovering valuable items is surprisingly satisfying, even if the gameplay starts repeating itself after a while. I just wish there was a bit more variety because the idea behind the game is genuinely fun.
I just want to say this before I get into it - I don't usually play "Simulator" games. They aren't really my style. I randomly picked a game in my library to try, one that I have NEVER played before using a website. Low and behold it landed on Barn Finders. This will be an ALL-IN-ONE review - Barn Finders base game, Barn Finders: Amerykan Dream and Barn Finders: Bid Wars DLC. So let's get to it!
What I didn't like/Cons
⚫The game is littered with bugs. Items can glitch through walls, floors and ceilings. I lost a job item because I picked it up, dropped it and all of a sudden it magically disappeared. Which, soft-locked me till I replayed the entire mission (because last save was at the start of the mission -_-) ⚫It's goofy and stupid beyond belief. When you think Barn Finders you might think buying storage units that have been abandoned or other locations like barns and then selling junk you find for profit... but this game has Aliens, moonshine that makes you question what the heck is going on, stupid silly characters... ugh. What did I play... ⚫The "humour" the game trys to force on the player falls flat on it's face hard because it's just so cringe. ⚫Practically no tutorials on what to do or what to collect. If it DOES tell you, it does it in a stupid, bad humour, terrible spelling speech bubble from an NPC. "Ur mar gurd, puck op dae shuvel an dug up yonder hole" which is at the other side of the damn map. ⚫The missions/levels or whatever you call them are so repetitive. The same thing over and over. Do the mission for the first time, collect your things, job item and it's done. Do it again. Do it again. Do you want to be scared? Well, do it again. Nothing is "unique". It's bland and boring. ⚫Selling items is... very poorly implemented. Mechanics wise. What I mean is - there is NO downside to bartering. You can barter, they don't lower their price they just accept it or say "take it or leave it". So.. barter EVERYTHING and you will always make money no matter what. ⚫What is the story... what is going on... What drugs am I taking to witness what the heck is on my screen? Why is there dancing aliens making me make moonshine while I steal all their items while a useless FBI agent walks around doing nothing... W H A T?!?!?!
Bidding Wars DLC
I know I said the base game was boring and bland but this DLC takes it to a WHOLE new level. Let me explain rather than doing a pro's and con's list. You go to an island and you live there, sell there, craft there in a pocket dimension. In that pocket dimension you store items you find on the island in "toilets" and craft items. To get items and materials, each day you drink moonshine. 3 different types to progress time (and make 3 places appear). Every single day you do the same thing. Over and over and over again. Not only that the new "crafting system" is terrible and unenjoyable. Any items you find in this DLC cannot be sold in your shop. What's the point? I missed my shop, I can't lie. This DLC actually made me miss playing the base game. This DLC, is not worth £8.50 and this feels like a last ditch attempt at a cash grab (as it was the last DLC).
Amerykan Dreams DLC
I have the same issue with this DLC as the base game because it basically IS the base game. The only thing this adds in is 3 new locations and 1 new "item" to use, the smoker to "SMOKE" bees. The missions are incredibly easy to complete and rather short. Its littered with bugs and by how old the game and DLC are, the developers CLEARLY do not care. This is clearly a CASH GRAB DLC. Just like the other one.
My Verdict/TL;DR
I... really don't know what to say about this game but to summarise my points - the game is littered with bugs, poor humour, practically no tutorials, bad graphics, repetitive gameplay loop (instantly) and 2 cash grab DLCS... I think I got the bad end of the stick to play a simulator game. In my honest opinion I would NOT pay £30 (roughly) for the base game and the DLC. I got mine in a Humble Bundle I think and... I am glad I did. I forced myself to finish the game so I'd never need to touch it again. I for one will not be buying anything from these devs again because it feels like they don't care about player feedback as, when I done some research, players have been reporting the bugs I came across for YEARS and the developer(s) seem incompetent to fix them or listen to players.
2/10. A repetitive, boring and buggy simulator game with 2 cash grab DLC's... I felt like I was on some sort of drugs playing this
This one is... a very difficult recommendation. See, it's a *LOT* of fun. I can sink hours into this just finding and grabbing items, selling them. The sense of humor is somewhat puerile, but at the same time, I can't help but find myself laughing at it, and though there are moments that feel uncomfortable, nothing falls into racism so much as character stereotypes. And *all* of them are stereotyped. If that's the kind of humor and characterization (or lack thereof) that you either find hilarious or can deal with, this game has a hell of a lot of fun charm to go along with the buy and sell. I genuinely enjoy the majority of it, despite what I'm sure that says about my sense of humor. The biggest issue that makes me lower the grade is that it's janky as *all* hell. Items clip a little too easily, programming errors pop up, and there are plenty of areas that you can get stuck in, though at least you can 'reload from last save' and get back to the entrance of a zone (generally with all finds intact). Getting back items that clipped into a background, on the other hand, is not as easy/possible to do (that I have found), so be careful. If that isn't your type of humor, and if 'jankiness' makes you tear your hair out, I completely get giving it a pass. I wouldn't blame you. But all in all, I genuinely would recommend it otherwise. It's not expensive, and it's worth it. I did receive it (and the DLC) as a gift, but I'm not going to lie: I would be willing to pay for it in full.
Simulator of running a shop, renovating, going to zone to pick up rares, wares and resources, returning to clean, repair, stock the shelves and solicits with customer during open hours. Gets extremely boring after simply a few stages. Extreme low optimization, low fps. Clunky controls and movement. Playing the game with fear of missing out an object, going round in circles searching each spots, worrying on omission. Bought the game since the launch, had little hype to run it. Just trying to clear some of the achievements. The FPS and Repetitiveness brings the game down, to keeps me in the game. Neutral Recommendation.
This game is pretty fun and goofy, but I can't really recommend it to people because there's just way too many bugs, and the game doesn't really tell you anything on how to do things, so you're just stuck at certain moments of just trying to figure out what to do. So there are just random bugs that will just make the whole game unpredictable, like for example, and one of the levels I was completely stuck and I couldn't leave or do anything, so I had to completely leave the game and restart it.
Gameplay loop is decent but it gets very repetitive after a few levels, and pretty much everything you see in the trailer is what you get, nothing more. Even though there isnt a whole lot of content I still tried to finish the game because it has a goofy and fun theme, but I cant finish it because one of the keys on the last level disappeared and I cant get it to respawn. I had to restart the game to make one of the key items spawn in another level but that didnt work this time. Complete waste of time on a broken game.
This game gets repetitive real quick. It's also full of bugs (prompts not being consistent, items floating in the area and other general jank). Pass unless you explicitly enjoy this kind of game.
синяя карточка не подходит к синему терминалу. посмотрел гайд на ютубе, оказывается синюю карточку надо засунуть в анус разработчику игры. игра еще и стоит в 10 раз дороже для России, чем для великой Омэрики
This game is pretty much the personification of the "work slop" genre. It sells itself on the premise of you have tasks to complete and a store to run, but it takes so many shortcuts with the mechanics that it almost feels like an asset flip at times. The biggest being that they could not manage to make any character walk, so they just teleport around with puffs of smoke. Not only can this be quite distracting, and pretty bad to watch, sometimes to characters will attempt to jump to nearly the same point in your store, making one of them fail to arrive even though they show up on the GUI. At least, that's the best explanation I have for why it happens, as there are two shelves where people stand in the same spot and that spot has always been full when I started to pay attention to it in relation to that bug. Beyond that obvious bit of nonsense, the game has several other bugs as well. There are times when doors will not open that should, which means you cannot carry some items out becuase they won't fit through standard doors. The developers know of this bug, and six years ago said they'd fix if. Even after two DLC released, it still exists. The developers "solved" this by giving you the ability to simply tag items to send them to your car automatically after a few seconds. Though that also comes into place when you have areas of maps that take you through warp points, such as being rowed to an island. At that point, the tagging items for transport becomes mandatory. There is no real attempt to balance the game. You can use an axe to destroy "junk" items and make them drop an increasing amount of 'salvage' items as you upgrade the axe. These salvage items can then be traded for $10 each... bought or sold for the same amount. It is not unreasonable to have a few thousand of these by the end. So every map comes down to cleaning up by destroying almost everything (you usually want to try to keep something around to jump up on if it becomes necessary), and picking up everything else you can. A "cleaning" game, if you will. Some of the items you do get head back to your shop. Your shop is a mess. There are a few stations you need to "upgrade" (read: buy) for functionality, such as cleaning or repairs. each one bein an awful 'minigame', the repair one by far the worst of the two as the item bounces up and down in station which can make it hard to keep your aim on the repair spots - which is necessary to fix them. It's really bad when using a controller. There is also an assembly station, as some items need to be found in parts and put together. There's not really an advantage to this, other than you do get a single reasonably priced item, if you aren't drowning in cash by the half way point of the game. Your shop has 3 small shelves, two wall displays - one large, one small, and 6 large item displays. Some of them will need to be built before use. You can upgrade these as well, if you wish. All that does is change the graphics (and in the case of at least one item, make it clip through the display when you've got it out). It doesn't bring more people to your store, it doesn't make them more likely to haggle or raise the price, it doesn't let you put more items on display - other than initially building some of the displays in the first place. It's just there to waste your money. There is a haggling mechanic. It is literally just a bar that goes back and forth and you want to hit it when it's max. Though even then sometimes the customer will not accept the change in price. The bar also does not necessarily match with what you will hit, a there are times when the bar was clearly in one zone, and a different zone activated for me. The graphics went out of sync. Something that is fatal in a timing game like that. Customers will also often let you haggle repeatedly. But not in a real "haggling" way where you have a price, they have a price, and you're trying to meet in the middle. The "haggle" mechanic just raises (or lower) the price on a failure... and then you can ask to do it agian. Quite a ♥♥♥♥ move to say "No, I want x for this.. on second thought, since i know you'll agree to that price, how about paying this much more instead?" Also, for the small shelves, customers will only ever purchase the first most item on the shelf. There is no randomization there. Whatever's in the lowest number position is what will sell. Because the developers couldn't figure out how to make them purchase something else on the shelf randomly, or based on personal preferences. Yes, the very limited selection of customers proports to have preferences on what they will buy, I have not seen this in action. They can also sell items to you, with the same haggling system. This is done by having one more standing point outside the store. With that point, there appears to be a list of what items can be sold that day, and every customer cycle will spawn one seller as well as the buyers until there's nobody left to sell you something. The maps start out fairly basic, but get wildly sprawling and complex after a while. A little too sprawling and complex, since you're supposed to find everything. Making you run through multiple transport methods to find everything gets tedious, not fun. Even when you have the item to find items you're missing, it can glitch a bit. It'll "find" big items you've already tagged to tow, and it ONLY finds items, not the collectables scattered about. Not that there's any point in getting the collectables. They do nothing for you. As for more instances of the developer's incomitance, achievements do not properly track things for triggering. Cleaning or repairing "everything" only increments a counter, and when you get duplicates sold in by customers it still increments. Even something as basic as given out cosmetics as rewards is flaws as your collection log posts a free vehicle skin every 40 redemptions. You get it every 30. And the bar will show up after you've collected them all and keep resetting. This game isn't good. It is he definition of slop, it is shovelware through and through. The only reason I decided to push through it was that I got it in a Humble Bundle that averaged out to around seventy five cents a game - And even then this one included both of its DLCs so it was the 'highest cost' of the bunch. At under a dollar, this game MIGHT be worth it. At anything more than that, pass. Even in this genre of 'work slop' you are flooded with options and you don't need to spend your time on this.
