In this city-building strategy game, you control a group of exiled travelers who decide to restart their lives in a new land. They have only the clothes on their backs and a cart filled with supplies from their homeland. The townspeople of Banished are your primary resource.

Reviews
About as classic as you can get for a city builder. Could use a few comfort upgrades, but it's very manageable and keeps you on your toes making sure everyone has food, clothes, and tools. Oh, and firewood. Never forget the firewood.
New player to this game, it seemed overwhelming at first but its getting very interesting now. Peaceful yet challenging game.

I've been sinking time into Banished for almost a decade now, and although modders and other devs have built upon its foundation, its still worth getting. As a teen growing up on the Anno, Stronghold and especially The Settlers games, I still recall being captivated by Banished and its unique premise; no combat, no tech tree, no aim for glory or expansion, just a bunch of exiled peasants having to deal with food security, population growth/decline and just winter in general. I loved the detailed and complex chain of production and resource management of The Settlers games (like in IV, different workers had different food preferences which affected their efficiency lol) and Banished scratched the same itch, except you're not amassing resources just to throw at the military or for conquest, and this isolationist schtick was not only weirdly refreshing in 2014, but it ushered in a new chapter in the RTS city building genre which pared things right back to just survival. The gratification came from creating a balance, and the more tenuous it was, the more gratifying it is was when you got it. Now I'm just waxing lyrical, but the dev made an incredible, challenging yet rewarding foundation, and I think that was always his goal, because he opened it up to modders only a few months after launch. But for this reason, I believe Banished still holds up and would still recommend it.
This is a wonderfully difficult game.
This was the first city builder I ever played, and it's still the best. Love the style, love the theme, love the difficulty, and LOVE the music. The ambient tracks are perfect. There's no money in this, there's just resources (food, wood, fuel, coats, tools), and you'll be constantly managing your resources. This game is not easy at all. It keeps you constantly engaged, and I've played other city builders where at a certain point it feels like you're on auto-pilot. This game never feels like that. It doesn't matter how big your town grows, it always feels like you're on the brink of failure. I like that challenge. Edit: Did I mention that this game is brutally difficult? After 150 hours I've literally never made a successful* town. I've gotten to 1300+ population, and it always ends the same.... starvation and freezing. *Growth needs to be managed constantly, otherwise success WILL be a liability.
tis good
A game with a good foundation, but plays like an early access game missing a lot of the content you'd expect. The mods help- I wouldn't play without them- but only take things so far. The game, last I checked, had a disparity between trees dying and being planted that meant any game would eventually see the map deforested, regardless of how well you tried to steward forests, and then your village would run out of wood and die. There are better clones of the game out there like manor lord, but so far the half dozen ones I've seen have all suffered from the same problem of lacking depth and variety and being labelled 'finished'
Just play Manor Lords instead
time consuming, poor interface, games run worse on Steam than standalone.
