Back 4 Blood was marketed like the glorious spiritual successor to Left 4 Dead, but playing it feels like discovering someone tried to recreate a legendary meal using corporate PowerPoint presentations and energy drinks. The entire game exists under the shadow of Left 4 Dead. And the worst part? It never escapes it for even a second. Every trailer screamed: “FROM THE CREATORS OF LEFT 4 DEAD.” Which immediately set expectations at: “Okay, this should be incredible.” Then players launched the game and realized: oh no… this is what happens when you technically recreate the formula but completely miss the soul. The combat LOOKS chaotic and exciting at first: * zombies everywhere * teammates yelling * special infected attacking * explosions * panic moments But after a while it starts feeling weirdly artificial, like the game is desperately trying to manufacture intensity instead of naturally creating it. Left 4 Dead had simplicity that worked perfectly. Back 4 Blood looked at that simplicity and said: “What if we added 47 systems nobody asked for?” Cards. Builds. Currencies. Supply lines. Rarities. Attachments. Stats. Modifiers. Deck optimization. Bro I came here to shoot zombies, not create a spreadsheet build for “+7% reload speed while crouching near emotional support teammates.” The card system is probably the biggest example. Some people love it. Others feel like it turns every run into: “meta build optimization simulator.” Instead of: “survive with friends against impossible odds.” And the special infected somehow manage to be both over-designed and less memorable at the same time. Ask almost anyone about Left 4 Dead and they instantly remember: * Tank * Witch * Hunter * Smoker Those enemies had personality. Meanwhile Back 4 Blood special infected sound like rejected gym supplements: * Crusher * Bruiser * Tallboy * Exploder * Reeker Half of them look like swollen meat accidents sprinting toward you in slightly different ways. And the balance at launch was brutal in the wrong kind of way. Not: “challenging.” More like: “the AI director personally hates your bloodline.” Players would open a door and instantly get: * swarmed * webbed * exploded * pinned * slammed into a wall * set on fire * emotionally destroyed all before reloading once. The gunplay itself is decent… but somehow the teamwork never hits the same emotional highs as Left 4 Dead. Back 4 Blood feels like a game where four people are individually shooting things near each other. Left 4 Dead felt like four survivors desperately trying to stay alive together. That difference is hard to explain technically, but you feel it immediately. The characters also suffer from “Marvel dialogue syndrome.” Everyone constantly talks like they’re auditioning for quirky apocalypse TikTok compilations. Nobody shuts up. Nobody sounds exhausted enough. And almost none of the dialogue becomes iconic. Meanwhile Left 4 Dead characters could say one sentence and instantly feel memorable: * “Pills here!” * “Boomer!” * “Witch!” * “Tank!” Simple. Clear. Perfect. Back 4 Blood overcomplicates everything while somehow feeling less impactful. And the pacing is exhausting. The game constantly throws: * mutations * hordes * corruption cards * bosses * environmental hazards at you nonstop like it’s terrified players might become bored if there’s 4 seconds of breathing room. Ironically this makes the chaos feel LESS special. If everything is intense all the time… nothing is. And the community reaction perfectly captured the problem: people didn’t necessarily think Back 4 Blood was terrible. They just kept thinking: “Why would I play this instead of Left 4 Dead 2?” Which is an absolutely devastating comparison to lose. The saddest part is that the game clearly has effort behind it. The graphics are better. The customization is deeper. The systems are more modern. But somehow the overall experience feels colder and more manufactured. Like a game assembled by committee after analyzing engagement metrics instead of understanding why people loved cooperative zombie games in the first place. Back 4 Blood isn’t a horrible game. It’s almost worse than that. It’s a game that constantly reminds you of a better game while never becoming memorable enough to replace it.
Games hasnt been updated since 2024 and they are still asking 100 bucks for it lol
6/10 I’m gonna be honest: if this game wasn’t constantly marketed as the “spiritual successor” to Left 4 Dead, I probably would’ve been much less harsh on it. But that’s exactly the problem. You CANNOT spend years telling people that Back 4 Blood is the successor to Left 4 Dead and that it’s made by the creators of Left 4 Dead, then deliver something that completely misses what made those games special in the first place. Is it a terrible game? No. Is it Left 4 Dead 3? Absolutely not. The story is okay. The Cleaners are decent enough, the weapons feel good, and there are moments where you can see some genuinely cool ideas buried under everything else. But man… the vibe just isn’t there. Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 had this unique atmosphere that made every campaign memorable. The music, the characters, the pacing, the special infected, the simplicity of jumping in with friends and immediately having fun. Back 4 Blood feels like it looked at Left 4 Dead and said: “What if we added 37 systems, 12 currencies, card decks, progression trees and a bunch of DLCs?” Instead of improving the formula, it feels like it overcomplicated it. And speaking of DLCs… There are WAY too many paid expansions for a game that never convinced me it deserved them in the first place. Every time I played, I couldn’t stop comparing it to Left 4 Dead 2, and every single time it made me want to go play Left 4 Dead 2 instead. That’s probably the biggest criticism I can give. Not because Back 4 Blood is awful. But because after a few hours I realized I’d rather replay a 2009 game than continue playing the supposed successor released more than a decade later. Overall: Good guns. Decent story. Some fun moments. But as a “spiritual successor” to Left 4 Dead? Massive disappointment. It’s not a bad game. It’s just painfully average living in the shadow of two masterpieces.
ni C piojo, ni C smok, ni C tank, ni C nera, ni F1, bad game.
Mildly enjoyable - it's ok nothing special - characters are bland, boring and predictable - nowhere near as captivating as L4D1 or L4D2 couldn't find any magic to grab me - don't like all this satanistic look of the SI's in games there's too much of that crap these days. I'd play doom if i wanted that sort of stuff.
Disclaimer for those not in the know: this game isn't L4D2 or a spiritual successor, it's its own thing and should be judged by its own merits, if you were looking for L4D2: imnmediately move away from this game, the following critique is about B4B as a standalone game, unrelated to L4D2. Despite all of the negativity towards this game, I still gave it a fair shot, and honestly it sucks. At least the game doesn't need you to play 80+ hours to get all the cards anymore, but outside of that QoL it honestly sucks. Here is a basic rundown of every issue I've had in this game, almost all of these issues are exclusive to NM/NH as the difficulties above Veteran are horribly balanced: - The game is way too luck based, certain combinations of mutations are just "♥♥♥♥ you, lose now" even with the most optimal builds and some combinations just outright end your run if you don't have the right builds - The AI, while better than launch, still sucks. They get distracted easy and you have to learn how to abuse the AI in obtuse ways (even more obtuse in not full squads). They are also genuinely useless for missions that require carrying items as they can't carry them - A ton of missions have infinite hordes so bad that they're near impossible to win without a certain amount of firecrackers/pipe bombs - A ton of cards were nerfed and never buffed so a ton of them just suck now and they abandoned the game so there's no hope of them ever buffing what they nerfed Other than those gameplay issues, the game is a pretty decent Horde Shooter, it was enjoyable on Veteran (but too easy) but anything above is borderline masochistic as you'd more often than not simply die from random ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ than anything of your own fault. NM/NH is the epitome of RANDOM ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ GO until the player dies, it isn't satisfying, it isn't fun, it becomes gambling for the one perfect run where everything aligns instead of getting cucked at a random point to random bs you can't counter. The game also lacks basic server QoL, normally games with a party system would treat the leader of the party as the priority when searching for a server to connect to (or they'd simply just have an option to set which server to connect to)... B4B doesn't. this means that if you play with someone who's far away it's a toss up on who gets the ♥♥♥♥ connection, even worse if only one of you can handle the lag that happens if they get the further away server. If you're in a party where eg: everyone plays fine if you get a server in SG? Well too bad, you can't just set it to look for a server in SG, you get a roulette between all of you, good luck This game is SO close to being good, but everything falls apart as soon as you try to play NM+ without a full party, especially in 2026 where the player counts aren't that healthy. Unless you have a full 4-man squad to play with, skip this game, there are better more balanced and fun horde shooter games with healthier playerbases out there. Yes, I don't recommend this game even when it's on a steep sale, the non-sale price is also completely ♥♥♥♥ for a game that is so old and hasn't gotten any updates since 2024
It's no Left 4 Dead and it shouldn't have been marketed as a successor to it but as it's own thing it's a fun game, especially on the higher difficulties. Every game plays differently due to corruption cards and also player playstyles depending on how they setup their decks (Melee, high DPS, Shotgun.etc) Definitely worth picking up when on sale, still has a player base too with crossplay being an option.
I cannot for the life of me imagine comparing this to L4D and thinking this comes out lacking. Guys. Lads. Friends. I'm beginning to think some of you didn't play L4D or don't remember it as well as you think you do. Listen, I loved L4D as much as the next guy, and I understand the game has become sacrosanct so to criticize it is heresy of the highest order, but the game definitely had shortcomings that, while it did not impede my enjoyment back in the day, would absolutely get it panned it if released today fresh. B4B improves on these things: floaty combat with imprecise movement, no aim-down sights, limited replayability due to very standard and same-y playthroughs, etc. Playing B4B I was amazed the recent reviews are listed as "mixed." The game is great fun! A buddy and I got into it yesterday and in one day I've put in over 10 hours because it immediately captivated me and scratched an itch I had been wanting to get at for a long time. I can certainly understand the RPG elements (the cards) rubbing some people the wrong way. For L4D purists especially, adding in any RPG elements is heresy, but like guys, it's like that so the game can veer into roguelite territory, which it does quite adeptly I might add. Read the room. It's like that to improve on the replayability of the L4D titles. The only real criticisms I will make of B4B is that the original price for all the content in a 4 year game is still nearly a hundred dollars, which is quite steep, and also that admittedly most of the characters have the personality of soggy cereal, which gets the job done and I am full but at what cost. Having said that, I got it on sale for ten smackaroos which is CERTAINLY worth the fun. Everyone saying this game isn't at least on par with it's spiritual successor from nearly two decades ago: you guys are crazy. The game's good, buy it on sale and have some fun.
A nivel IA , supera con creces a Left for Dead 1 y 2.
