Disclaimer: this is my first time getting into a fighting game since Melee, and my first time enjoying an arcade fighter. The emphasis on movement abilities is really great, and they did a fantastic job with the character designs. But this is one of the most buggy full releases I've ever played. If you try to skip through the pre-trial demos then the game will get locked in a black screen state where you can't do anything. Sometimes if you reset a trial or free training the game will just freeze. At one point my dash button (which counts as a 2 button press) just stopped being able to trigger EX special moves in trials, while in free training it worked perfectly fine. On top of all that, the story mode is super bland. IMO story mode would have been a perfect place for new players to get a grip on the fundamentals of the game, but they just kinda throw you into it. I'm fine with the story mode having no difficulty setting, but it doesn't feel like it's teaching anything about the game, and more just throwing you into sequential bot lobbies with a loosely written story. The most polished part of this game is the raw multiplayer versus mode. I have won a single match out of like 60 matches but it was fun to see what is possible in this game with more practice. The actual gameplay of Avatar Legends is peak, although I do wish there was some sort of input buffer to help beginners like myself with combo consistency. The mechanics are super well done. Unfortunately everything outside of the combat in versus mode feels unrefined / unfinished. If they released this in Early Access I'd be leaving a positive review, and will happily change this to a positive review if they focus more on bugfixes and UX stuff

Let me first say that this game is not for the faint of heart. If you are not familiar with fighting games, you are going to struggle. This game is extremley unforgiving. Matches are extremely quick, you will take a bunch of damage from combos. You will also need to spend a lot of time grinding in the training room to figure out combos, blockstrings, and flow movement. While I have a bit of time on Dragon Ball FIghterz and for some reason BBTAG, I am not very good at fighting games, and this is a game that takes a lot of time and patience to even stand a chance against half decent players. And I ADORE it. Every combo feels so unique. Every character plays like they had their source material in mind, which makes me very happy because I am a huge Avatar fan. I'm so glad the devs went the route of keeping the game simple enough you don't get overwhelmed, but still complex enough the game feels challenging in a good way. Yes there are some problems, some characters aren't finished, and some promised features are not out yet, but you can blame Paramount for that because they are insistent on screwing over the series. Even with all the problems, the devs made it work, and I rarley ever think about them. Please beleive in this game and support it however you can, it is a once in a lifetime game. Nothing comes close to the dopamine rush this game brings, best new release in years.
packed full of heart and soul. simple foundational mechanics with a ridiculously high skill ceiling. fun to boot up and mash in, fun to lab the layers of any given interaction. released in an unfinished state and still one of the most quality fighting games on the market right now.
I played this for half an hour, and got put off it. The Game itself is not the problem, it's a fighting game, so Player Vs. Player will be fine for me, but the CPU difficulty is brutal, and there is no difficulty select, they expect players to play & know how to fight like a pro player, which I am not, due to my Cerebral Palsy in my left side. In short, the CPU difficulty is the main problem & reminds me of Alpha-152 difficulty-syndrome specifically from Dead or Alive 4
I'm having a lot of fun. Happy to see a fighting game that isn't completely dumbing itself down for casuals who won't play the game for more than a week regardless of how easy they make it. There is plenty of sauce to be found in this game and I look forward to discovering it myself. My issue is not with the game itself, but that it's clear the publishers ♥♥♥♥♥♥ a lot of things up and likely forced this to release prematurely. This is a *very* sloppy release. There are lots of minor things that have been standard in the genre that are missing, this game has easily the worst combo trial mode I've ever experienced and the whole ranked situation is legitimate false advertising. I will happily make this a positive review when the features promised in the advertising are in the game working as intended, but as a consumer, we can't reward this.
Review written from the perspective of a midcore fighting game enjoyer. I rarely go to locals but enjoy learning fighting games to a proficient level. I could summarise my thoughts on this game with 2 points: it's HARD, and EVERYONE has SAUCE. If you're interested, This period (July-August 2026) just after release is gonna be the best time to jump into the game because there isn't a defined meta yet. Even the top players are still learning the characters and figuring out what works. If you find a player that's really good on their character, there's a good chance that they haven't yet spent the time to learn what YOUR character does, so spend some time in training to pick up your character's gameplan and kick some ass. The devs have already committed to improving the visuals on lacking characters, so some of the louder complaints from the community I've seen are already being addressed. Going into this game I wasn't in love with the visuals. The UI, menus and some characters are clearly missing polish and juice, and the dash button is a *macro*, not a dedicated button so it will come out as a special move input if you put in motion inputs while dashing (this definitely is not 2XKO). However I was very pleasantly surprised by how crazy fun the game is once you've picked up the basics. The game has elements of anime fighters and marvel vs capcom in the combo structure, Smash bros with the tech roll and spot-dodge mechanic for most characters, street fighter with the flow stance's auto-parry, and more i'm definitely missing. there's a lot of mechanics here to add layers to all of your interactions with the opponent. For example, tech rolls and air recovery stop you from being locked in the corner for the entire match. This means the match is unlikely to be over in one interaction unless your opponent predicts your getup option. then. you're screwed. UNLESS you use the special recovery option which costs your flow meter and launches you back to a safe neutral position. So there are good number of options you have to recover, thus the game never ends up feeling like Street Fighter 6 where you can end up eating back-to-back strike/throw mix in the corner for a whole round. After a few online games of floundering on katara, I ended up sinking 4 hours into a training mode session where the game really fell into place for me. I pieced together my own set of BNB combos and figured out the character's basic gameplan. Katara has easy and effective basic mixups and obnoxious fullscreen pressure but also stance cancel shenanigans, pressure resets, crossups, difficult combos and setplay you'll need to learn to deal with better opponents. The easy parts of the character let me take lots of wins on my first day while I slowly built the muscle memory to even start executing her combos. And that's just the variant of katara that I play. If you pick either of her 2 other modes or "supports", you're going to be prioritising and learning different parts of her kit. 13 hours in, I feel confident in saying the gameplay and learning curve is excellent and I would highly recommend this game based on that alone. I haven't played the story mode or single player modes and don't intend to for a while. You can instantly unlock the two secret characters with a cheat code hidden in the menus which is very nice from the devs. On release, there's no ranked mode. Queuing online you're likely to play against someone who just installed the game and then someone on their 30th hour immediately after. Personally I think this is a good choice on release, because unranked mode doesn't cap the number of rematches. You and the opponent can keep rematching, adapting to each other and having more satisfying sets. Overall a strong recommend for fighting game enjoyers; if you're a casual this game is quite execution heavy, but now is the perfect time to jump in and try because everyone is figuring the game out together. The real Avatar was the combos we dropped along the way.
