Exactly what I needed - a story-heavy RPG fix with a utilitarian UI geared towards reading well-written dialogues and plot, and reasonably in-depth combat and progression systems. I've only scratched the surface of the tale - hopefully it will live up to the expectations and provide hours of immersive play and reading material. So far, after 3 hours, I'm enjoying it immensely!
Avadon: The Black Fortress review This is a good game. I don't know why... but for some reason despite the archaic UI and lack of any kind of music, playing this game just feels like breeze. It has its strengths and weaknesses but does it's best to just present the player a nice and satisfying adventure. These games aren't very pricey either and I think if you like RPGs for the systems they have you will get your money's worth. The campaigns in most Spiderweb Software games are very lengthy to be made by such a small team. This may not be Spiderweb Software's best game but it is a good game nonetheless. I know I did enjoy the writing and the challenge for the most part so far.
Avadon fails for me for the following reasons. Quest tracking feels deliberately difficult to make use of. I often have to take a break several days long between gaming so I rely on a quality quest tracker to point me in the right direction. Combat is too simple. I don't need more buttons to press but the buttons I have need to be tactically interesting. Enemy variety is low, trash mobs are everywhere, "tough" encounters feature enemies that are just absolute massive bags of HP, and I could go on. Graphics are not good but that's not what we come to indie RPGs for. Still, the spell effects are super lame and gear has 0 impact on what your characters look like. Enemy recolors are rampant. The story is neither good nor bad. Writing seems decent, if that makes any sense. You can't move the camera with WASD which is a huge annoyance. There are too many things to pick up that have zero use in the world. Even 1 coin for a fork would have made me feel better in this regard. I bought the entire trilogy but I don't think I'm going to bother.
Spiderweb Software simply never misses. Much love Jeff Vogel & Crew
Good, lengthy CRPG.
The Avadon trilogy, starting off with Avadon: The Black Fortress, is another gem by Spiderweb Software. It's not my favorite by them, but it's still a very solid one where you play an enforcer part of a larger ruling system called Avadon and are given quite a lot of power to make choices and tough calls. It follows the Spiderweb Software formula to a tee being another retro-style RPG with plenty of turn-based combat but there's still a lot of cool fun and charm to be had here.
i gave this game a second try but the pace is just too slow. There is much text in the game and after finishing the tutorial and going into the first mission you are thrown without direction of where to go. If you enjoy reading a lot and talking to every NPC in a game i would def suggest this game. Otherwise just pass it
Not for me...the level progression is soooo simplistic it's like *Dumber Diablo* yet it claims to be some kind of deep story driven CRPG. It's not, its a party based ARPG at best and the story is dull, so is the world. If you think Spiderweb stuff is deep well written fantasy with a fascinating world and lore you need to get out more and play more games/read more books.
I just finished my second play-through. I really enjoyed the story this time more than when I played years ago. I wanted to know who was trying to bring down the mighty Avadon. The combat can get repetitive, and sometime the followers pathfinding can be frustrating. There is no music in game. This seems a little odd to me. Overall it is enjoyable.
