It's not about saving the world. In this "leisure adventure RPG," failing student Marie pursues alchemy, adventures, and quests while aiming to graduate in five years. "Atelier Marie," the origin of the Atelier series, has been remade with new elements!

in short: Atelier Marie Remake is a lovely remake of the original for a to high price. In long: I really like the original Marie, so seeing the game remade for a modern audience is great. I really would love it if we could get all the pre Rorona Atelier games on steam, some of them are among my favorite games of all time. ( please... I need Nikkie to be okay... ) The additions are fine by me, the guide and story menus are convienient additions that make the gameplay a lot more streamlined. I'm more neutral opposed to the lower difficulty, but since the very next game after the original Marie was made a lot easier, I understand they wouldn't want to keep the exp givout the original had. The chibi-ish artstyle is fine, but ony because the original looked fairly chibi. If the other games are being remade as well, I hope we won't be seeing chibi graphics from Atlier Judie onwards. It's mostly just the price that's a sticking point for me. 50 bucks is about the price I'd expect for a bundle of the first trillogy, but for 1 game it's a bit much. I'd wait for a sale if you're really interested in the game. As a remake itself I do really like hw it still is the same game, not a modern reinterpretation where you go on a massive journey, it really is a remake. In there, I also applaud keeping in stuff like the original enemies, like the bugs and lamias, since most of the modern 3d Atelier games feel like they try to be a bit to cutesy, and the ps1 and ps2 games had a lot more wild, random and "out-there" designs ( if you know you know ) Concluded: Get the game when it's on sale if you're interested in seeing where and how Atelier started. 7/10
8/10 fun short game. When you start the game you get the choice of playing the original Time Limited mode or the Unlimited Time mode, there are apparently 3 events that are locked if you don't play Time Limited, but you can go back in a ng+ and do them to my knowledge. The time limit might seem a bit tight at first, but I finished my first playthrough with over 200 days left, and that was with me not really being time efficient. There isn't really much of a story outside of just being told to get better at school, but I found all the character stories to be fun enough that there didn't need to be more story forced in.
It was fun, I beat it in one sitting. The crafting was neat and hopefully the games further on in this series go further in depth (this is the first one, and I started with the remake). The combat system was abysmal, and is part of what stopped me from replaying it to see other endings. I have no intention of participating in the game's combat ever again. I'm assuming the NG+ mechanic lets you see more events and get the remaining endings, but I saw ~65%+ of the events on my first run, and save scumming let me see two endings. I'll just look on youtube for the rest. Overall, the story was neat and it's worth at least one playthrough. Don't pay more than $20 for this game.
This was my first entry into the Atelier series, and it immediately made clear why these games are often associated with a cozy, slice-of-life atmosphere. The game captures a relaxed, almost therapeutic rhythm: gathering ingredients, crafting items, and slowly improving Marie’s workshop over the course of the academy assignment. That low-stakes structure gives the game a pleasant, laid-back vibe that is easy to settle into. That said, I found the characters and the story fairly underwhelming. While the game leans heavily on small character moments and everyday interactions, few of the personalities really stood out to me, and the narrative itself feels extremely light. It works as a framework for the gameplay loop, but not much more than that. The gameplay is also extremely simple by modern standards. Alchemy, gathering, and combat are all very straightforward, and most systems resolve quickly without requiring much strategy or experimentation. The various minigames are particularly shallow and feel more like small diversions than meaningful mechanics. However, it’s important to remember that this remake is based on a 1997 PlayStation game that essentially started the entire Atelier franchise. In that context, it’s clear Gust was experimenting with a new concept: a relaxing RPG focused on crafting and everyday life rather than epic world-saving stakes. From that perspective, the game is historically interesting, even if the results feel like a mixed bag today. Because of that, I would mainly recommend Atelier Marie to two types of players: - Fans of the series who want to experience where everything began. - Curious newcomers who can pick it up at a significant discount. That’s actually how I approached it, and at the right price it’s an enjoyable curiosity—a glimpse into the humble origins of one of JRPG’s coziest franchises.
