One of the best remakes Ubisoft has made in years and I still can't recommend it
I genuinely wish I could give Black Flag Resynced a positive review, because judged purely as a game, I absolutely would. The developers deserve enormous credit for what they've created here. Black Flag is one of those games many of us remember looking far better than it actually did because nostalgia fills in the gaps. Resynced somehow looks like the Black Flag I remember, rather than the Black Flag that actually existed. The Caribbean looks fantastic. Lighting, shadows, reflections and ray tracing can be gorgeous, especially at night, and the storms, sunsets and lantern-lit streets capture that romanticized pirate atmosphere incredibly well. Thankfully, it isn't just prettier graphics either. Combat, parrying, stealth and movement feel more modern without losing what made Black Flag special, and the game scales surprisingly well across older hardware too. There are bugs and technical issues, but underneath them is, in my opinion, one of the better remakes we've had in recent years. So to the programmers, artists, designers, animators and everyone else who actually built this game: Thank you. Seriously. You brought back something many of us loved without destroying its identity. Which makes the rest of this review even more frustrating.

So why the negative review?
Believe it or not, it's not even primarily because of Ubisoft's monetization. Do I like paying premium game prices while being offered cosmetics, convenience items and overpriced DLC, including things related to information on the map? No. But let's be honest: it's Ubisoft. I knew which publisher's game I was buying. What ultimately changed my recommendation was my experience with the Steam community surrounding this game and the way it is being moderated. I genuinely enjoy helping people with technical problems. Not everybody knows what VRAM is, why their frametimes are terrible or whether DLSS or FSR makes sense for their GPU. If I know the answer, I usually try to help. I've done that on Steam, Reddit and elsewhere for years, and it genuinely feels good when somebody eventually comes back with: "That fixed it. Thank you." After my experience in the Black Flag Resynced forum and from what I've read and heard from others, that motivation is basically gone. I received one temporary suspension over a response to somebody asking for technical help. But after that suspension expired, I received another suspension over a completely different comment that was essentially just technical troubleshooting about VRAM, DLSS/FSR, resolution and graphics settings. And it seems it isn't even an isolated case. It is happeneing to others as well, right now as you are reading this comment. Rather than turning this review into a novel, I've documented both suspensions, including the actual screenshots and the discussion around them here: Both suspensions, screenshots and the full discussion Don't take my word for it. Look at the screenshots and judge for yourself. There are people in that thread who disagree with me too. That's exactly why I'm linking it.

Steam says Ubisoft. Ubisoft says Steam.
I appealed. Steam Support told me the suspension was issued by the developer's moderation staff and sent me to Ubisoft. Ubisoft then sent me back to Steam. So: Steam → Ubisoft → Steam And the simplest question remains unanswered: What exactly did I do wrong? What makes this even harder to understand is the apparent inconsistency. I've seen much more serious behavior in the same forum, including accusations of pedophilia directed at another user, remain visible while the situation escalated before the thread was eventually locked by Steam support, beause Ubisoft mods would simply ignore it. Keep in mind, we are talking about accusations which can be life changing. Accusations which made people take their owns lives in the past. If you're interested, judge that case for yourself too: Example of the moderation inconsistency I'm referring to And from what I've personally seen, this is far from the only situation that has made me question how moderation is being applied. I'm not claiming some grand conspiracy. I don't know whether my own situation and other cases were selective moderation, retaliation, an overly broad interpretation of the rules or simply poor moderation. I can only show you what happened. If the rules are strict, fine. Apply them strictly but apply them consistently. If we broke a rule, tell us which one. That's all we asked for.

The part that genuinely makes me sad
The developers who made this remake had nothing to do with any of this. The people who created that gorgeous lighting, rebuilt the Caribbean and modernized the gameplay didn't decide how a Steam forum should be moderated. Yet their work is ultimately receiving a negative recommendation from me because of the customer experience surrounding it. And I hate that, because underneath all of this is a game I genuinely love. My solution at this point is simple: I won't participate in that forum anymore. Why spend my free time helping strangers troubleshoot their games if an ordinary technical reply can later become the basis for another suspension? That's not the fault of the users. Most of them have been great and genuinely appreciative. But the motivation is gone. A healthy community isn't built by a publisher alone. It's also built by players voluntarily giving their time to other players. Make those people feel unwelcome long enough and eventually they'll stop contributing.

Final thoughts
Ubisoft will happily take my money for the game, DLC and cosmetics. But when I ask why I was suspended over a technical troubleshooting comment, nobody seems able to give me a straight answer. Maybe somebody at Ubisoft will eventually look at this properly and prove me wrong. I genuinely hope they do. Because I don't want Ubisoft to fail. I want them to be better. I want the talented people who clearly poured enormous effort into this remake to have their work represented by a company and community experience worthy of it. I know one negative Steam review probably won't change anything. I'm one customer among millions. I don't have millions of followers, and there won't be some huge PR backlash because a few random Steam user feels unfairly treated. This review is simply my small form of protest. I'm not asking anyone to harass a moderator. I'm not asking anyone to review-bomb the game. I'm not even asking you to agree with me. The evidence and discussions are linked above. Look at them yourself. Read both sides. Make up your own mind. To the developers of Black Flag Resynced: You made something genuinely special. Thank you. I loved returning to Edward Kenway's Caribbean.

ASSASSIN'S CREED BLACK FLAG RESYNCED
This is one of the best games I’ve played. It delivers a stunning gorgeous visuals, a fantastic story, and a huge amount of content that keeps you engaged for hours. The graphics are incredible, with beautifully detailed environments, vibrant oceans, and impressive character models that make the world feel alive. There’s a lot things to do like exploring islands, upgrading your ship, hunting treasure, completing side missions, and diving into naval battles. The game constantly rewards exploration and curiosity. The gameplay is extremely addictive. Melee combat is smooth and satisfying, while ship combat is intense, strategic, and one of the highlights of the entire experience. The variety of activities and combat options keeps everything fresh from start to finish. The story is fantastic, delivering a memorable pirate adventure with strong characters, great pacing, and emotional moments that stick with you. It captures the spirit of freedom, danger, and discovery in a way few games can match. Overall, this game is a magnificent experience, exciting and full of personality. I highly recommend it to everyone.
A ambientação é simplesmente fantástica. “The Sea is the same as ever…”
After 70 hours in, I can say this is an absolute blast of a REMAKE! 10/10 would play AGAIN!
Just beat the game. The parkour controls got even more busted, ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up, and clunky: the character does a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ job finding "parkour triggers" and figuring out "where to jump." Combat completely lost its flow, the pacing is absolute trash because your block doesn't do a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ thing while you're in an attack animation. You literally have to make a micro-pause before an attack just to interrupt an incoming strike—an absolutely "perfect" idea. Devs, your combat ideas are so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ trash that you all need to get fired the ♥♥♥♥ out of there. Right before playing this, I was playing Mirage, which had auto-heal outside of the "red-yellow zones" (and the exact same thing was in Assassin's Creed Shadows). But you smartass ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ decided to make a totally ♥♥♥♥♥♥ combat rhythm, remove the auto-heal, and make the body drops RNG. So when you can't get a proper melee kill, you just end up mindlessly button-mashing, or you pull out your pistols and just blast everybody. Super "interesting": 30 bullets is enough to literally do a FULL sweep of a mission or even melt a boss. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awesome—you're basically gunning down a boss that's practically standing still. Brilliant combat idea! Also, a huge thanks to the brain-dead level designer and QA tester who did the "Observatory": when you're ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ jumping across pillars, the character randomly decides to do a "leap of faith," not to mention the totally janky ledge-grabbing. To sum it all up: you freaks are milking insane amounts of cash for an overcooked/rehashed game that holds a special place in a lot of people's hearts. Meanwhile, you're making these completely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ trash skins for both the cat and the sailor crew. Are you guys drinking paint and going completely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ blind over there? And to top it all off, you literally released latex BDSM suits as both premium and free-to-play content.
Graphics are stunning but that might be one of very few positive things about this game. There's no more hidden-blade combat or disarming/using enemies' weapons. New combat is now more of hack and slash with repetitive counter-takedown or hook-trip-takedown. It's especially frustrating to fight against multiple enemies when you get interrupted before takedown animation, or when buttons are not as responsive, or when you roll to avoid a brute attack but instead game rolls you into him to get pushed off - MULTIPLE TIMES. Parkour is not fluid and you constantly find Edward bumping into small things or jumping to places you do not intend him to (example: while climbing onto a ship, u press jump to go up but somehow he makes a big curve backward into the ocean like he's an Olympic diver). Bugs here and there where you have to reload your save to reset them (example: Edward suddenly loses the ability to walk/run but somehow skates on land like he's jesus on water). It takes years to buy/upgrade/sell stuff when you have to wait for game to say "it's done" then you can click buy/upgrade/sell another item. Rinse and repeat. Also why show half a minute of just Edward waiting about during a timeskip when it's a cutscene right after? Writing makes no sense in some new content or quest order, regarding Edward's character development. I didn't care much about the DLC/MTX stuff people've mentioned but heard about Ubisoft Barcelona. Big fkin OOF. Don't get this game on full price. Simply play the original or do it the Edward Kenway's way.
Visually this game looks amazing. The controls on the other hand are absolute dog pile. Why did we need to change it from the old one? I could only stand it for about 18 minutes of gameplay and asked for a refund. Just, absolutely ruined it for me. I was looking forward to playing this game for a few months now, but now exceptionally disappointed.
The fact that you have to have an Ubisoft account to play the game is annoying. If you can't access your Ubisoft account you can't even play the game...
