I'll mainly be talking about the career mode, as that was the main selling point for me. It started off fine and I was having a lot of fun with it, but after a few hours the cracks started to show. The career mode is super buggy. Flight routes won't work. You'll have a long haul flight of hours, only for the route not to show your destination, and if you manage to find it on your own, it won't trigger that you landed preventing you from completing the mission causing multiple wasted hours. Sometimes you'll fail mission to no fault of your own. Buggy geometry will cause you to crash. Seeing as how this game as been out for a while now, it seems the powers that be have no interest in fixing it. It's a shame. There's a lot of fun to be had, but the buggy nature of it makes me not recommend it to anyone interested in the career mode.
Honestly, I'm terribly disappointed. MSFS 2020 was great. It had issues, but I could've seen it improving over time, as it was promised a decade of support. Then, Microsoft decided to launch this. It felt like a betrayal, but as the release was approaching I managed to become hopeful again. So I bought it, launched it - campaign doesn't work. The main feature that was added works worse than third party mods for MSFS 2020. So I put it back. I've returned after 2 years - campaign still doesn't work, and you get stuck on ATC after landing. On top of that, despite fumbling it so hard, the team didn't think about making the campaign conditions less restrictive, so that we could still progress through the campaign on a landing basis, without being blocked at the hold-short line and having to keep restarting the mission/game in hopes of it working this time. A waste of money, but most of all a waste of time.
I'm going to be honest, I primarily got this game because FSX:SE was crashing on me. It turned out to be the most fun I've had in a simulation game in a long time. I sometimes have no idea what dials I'm turning or what switches I'm clicking. What does LOC do? No idea. I struggle with using the autopilot especially on Airbus. How do I successfully initiate ILS to autoland? I haven't managed a single ILS landing despite tuning the frequencies. Despite all my struggles, I've landed a commercial jet somewhat safely a few times with minimal assists. I'm quite proud of that achievement. "Yay, I've done a thing!" The airlines can trust me in case they ever need a pilot.
After playing for more than 500 hours, I can say that this is an enjoyable game, especially in free flight. However, in career mode there are still far too many glitches. In some missions, I can’t complete certain tasks without having to skip that part.
Edit: I just reset my career and chose another airport. No bugs in the other airport. In Career mode, I couldn't get past the PPL Check Ride due to the bug- after landing, and hold short of taxi way, there are no ATC instructions where to park, and I cannot confirm the ATC clearance. ( I tried multiple solutions found on forums (shutting off engine, restarting, crashing etc) - still wont work. Hope this can be fixed. :/ Anyone else with this problem, please share how you got past this issue. I'm hopeful and trying hard to be very optimistic about this game despite it being BUGGY, takes long to load, and crashes. Will explore the other game modes for the mean time.
NOT RECOMMENDED This is a high-end build that exceeds every recommended specification for this game by a significant margin. The issue I experienced is a known software defect, not a hardware limitation. I wanted to love this game. The visuals are stunning, the world is incredible, and the concept of Career Mode is exactly what flight simulation has been missing. Unfortunately I cannot recommend it in its current state because of a game-breaking bug that made it completely unplayable for me. Career Mode is the entire reason most people buy MSFS 2024. Everything is gated behind a mandatory PPL certification mission that you cannot skip. I spent 3.5 hours across multiple attempts trying to complete it and failed every single time, not because I was doing anything wrong, but because of a known bug that Microsoft has not fixed. Here is what happens: at the very end of the PPL mission, after you have landed and are taxiing to parking, the ATC dialogue required to complete the mission either refuses to start at all or only gives you a 'Say Again' option with no way to progress. The mission cannot be completed without this dialogue. There are no skip options available at this stage of the certification. You are simply stuck. This is not a rare or obscure bug. It is all over the official Microsoft Flight Simulator forums, Steam discussions, and Reddit. Microsoft knows about it. It has survived multiple sim updates without a proper fix. The only suggested workarounds involve keyboard shortcuts and manual radio tuning that did not work in my case. I tried everything: manually tuning the COM radio, ALT+N to force parking, full engine shutdown, empty community folder, full sim restarts. Nothing worked. 3.5 hours gone with nothing to show for it. The sad part is this game clearly has enormous potential. But selling a product with a mandatory first mission that a significant portion of players cannot complete due to a known unpatched bug is not acceptable at full price. Wait for a sale or wait until they actually fix Career Mode. As it stands right now I cannot recommend it.
- needs fast Internet connection at all times - no longer allows for manual local cache - higher base hardware requirements - Dune DLC is locked to MSFS2020 (cannot be played in 2024. Ornithopter also not available) - Top Gun DLC also not available (though you do get the F/A-18 Super Hornet with the Standard Edition) + smaller hard drive footprint + migrates almost all your MSFS2020 Premium/Deluxe and Marketplace content to your MS2024 Edition (very rare compatibility exceptions) + allows partial 'base content' installs + updated physics (compared to MSFS2020) + integrated flight planning and tracking (EFB) + has more animals + active forest fires ... + ... which you can fight from a firefighting airplane + real-time ship tracking + career mode (which many players complain about being broken - I do not know myself) + dynamic seasons + improved lighting, clouds, terrain + raytraced shadows (optional) + Stranger Things (promotional DLC) ... which gives you the Huey and is surprisingly well done and fun to play + Red Bull Race mode is free (was paid DLC in 2020) + continued regular free updates and support If you are considering MSFS2024 you HAVE to have a FAST INTERNET CONNECTION. (at least 50Mbps or above). The best CPU/GPU is useless without it. Otherwise, the visual quality will be inconsistent and even poor at times. This version has completely shifted to a cloud-streaming-first approach, despite still having a 'rolling cache' on your PC. In 2020 you could download almost everything locally and avoid slower connection issues. You have no longer the 'manual cache' option (which allowed you permanently store high-quality LODs locally). In MSFS2024 you still have the option to download content from the Marketplace locally. It also allows now to selectively download 'Base Content' - so you can avoid huge file sizes, if you do not want particular airports or other content that is eating up your hard drive. OR ... you can choose to download "1GB of sheep" (yes. 'Sheep' as in 'animal'), etc. Further, on the technical side, apparently, the game is now better optimized to take advantage of your CPU cores. I take that at face value. On my old AMD Ryzen 7 2700X (8c/16t) I am running both MSFS versions and cannot tell one way or another. I do see that MSFS2024 is more hardware-hungry though. I owned the MS Store version of MSFS2020 and bought the Steam version of MSFS2024. The game merged my XBOX and Steam accounts and authenticated my purchase of the previous (Deluxe) version. It then authenticated and unlocked the available content in MSFS2024. I have had no issues with the login procedure on Win11. You do need a MS/XBOX Live account and connect it to Steam to play MSFS2024 either way.
I used to fly helicopters for with the marines, pretty accurate sim all things considered...there used to be some ground effect issues on platforms that has been patched so all things considered very happy. A lot cheaper than burning actual jet fuel. Highly recommend some quality hotas as well.
