THIS GAME DOES NOT WORK BY JUST BUYING IT. you have to download 2 things and mess in the game files before you can even play the game as newer PC's causes this game to crash before the logos load. even after you get the game to run you need to make sure you do not have the game on more than 60FPS and Vsync ON or your leap of faiths won't end well. the hay turns into rocks (not literally) and you'll just die. if you follow this guide you'll get it to work though: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3661986987
Revisiting the Ezio trilogy gave me the urge to try the original Assassin's Creed again, more than a decade after last fully completing it. Unfortunately, getting the game to work properly is a bit of a headache. The game tries to ping now defunct Ubisoft servers, causing crashes on startup. You can block the exe in Windows Firewall from pinging, which gets it past the Ubisoft logo sequence. But this does not resolve everything. Now you're in the game, but it will freeze recurringly as it is still trying to ping non-existing servers, severely ruining the experience. Your 2 options right now are either simply disconnecting from the internet every time you want to launch the game, or editing the exe such that the pingno longer occurs. I resorted to the latter. So yeah, you can still get it to a functioning state, but it shouldn't have to take the user this kind of troubleshooting. If Ubisoft wants to save money by shutting down servers that only serve to collect certain data for a singleplayer game, by all means go for it. But how hard would it have been to patch the f****** game such that it doesn't crash on startup or freezes constantly due to that decision? Like, this took me maybe 30 minutes to troubleshoot, so a single dev could easily do this in less than a business day. This is the kind of s*** that drives the Stop Killing Games petition, and is ultimately why I don't recommend the game, because not everyone is as comfortable or capable of troubleshooting. It's the same thing in AC Revelations, where they patched the game and accidentally made both the DLC and some of the base game content inaccessible. At least that game mostly works out of the box so to speak, as opposed to this one, but if we're taking this into account together with The Crew debacle, Ubisoft leadership clearly doesn't respect their own products or customers. Now, onto the gameplay itself ... It's in a much better state than I anticipated. The parkour is essentially as functional and as powerful a gameplay system as in the Ezio trilogy, and the 3 cities are beautiful playgrounds for it, better than most locations Ubisoft has produced in the last decade. The game was truly ahead of its time on this front. The story also remains strong. This is still the most unique game of the franchise. Altaïr is not likeable by design and philosophical themes underpinning the Brotherhood and the Templars bleed through the narrative, both in the modern day as well as Altaïr's segments. It's the only game where I'd say the Creed and its philosophy are the actual protagonists. Not to discredit Altaïr, whose arrogance gets replaced by wisdom as the game progresses, making him a favorite next to Ezio. But the game is not without faults, far from it. They created these beautiful playgrounds but failed to fill them in meaningful and satisfying ways. Every sequence follows the same steps: do a few investigations and assassinate. Information is always given through exposition. And this is the best it has to offer. The side content is completely mind-numbingly boring. At most the many flags give an excuse to use the cities as the playgrounds they were made to be. But the Kingdom is the worst offender. A large space void of anything to do to the point where you wonder why it is even there. So yes, my experience nearly 20 years after release echo the common sentiment. It is still one of the best "Assassin's Creed" games, but it is a heavily dated game that sometimes feels more like a tech demo they failed to fill with content.
Fix for freezes:
Turn off internet connection and play offline. No other fix worked for me. Game is trying to connect to non-existing server leading to freezes.
Review:
For 2007 its crazy
⭐ Positive for the game. Negative for Ubisoft's support. Assassin's Creed is a legendary game. It's the title that brought millions of players together and the foundation that turned Ubisoft into one of the biggest names in gaming. As a game, it's an absolute classic and deserves respect for what it achieved. Unfortunately, the PC version in 2026 feels abandoned. The first thing many players experience is a random crash at launch with no explanation. The only real solution is to install community-made fixes. Thankfully they work, but players shouldn't have to rely on modders just to launch a game they legally purchased. Then there's the infamous high FPS bug. The game engine simply wasn't designed to run above 59–60 FPS, causing issues such as the well-known hay jump bug. After hours of researching and experimenting, I managed to work around it by modifying engine behavior and creating my own keybind-based solution. I won't share the technical details because they rely on exploiting the game's engine. And that's exactly the problem. Players shouldn't have to reverse-engineer a game just to make it work correctly on modern hardware. Ubisoft had nearly two decades to release an official fix, yet the community has done more to keep this game alive than the developers themselves. Yes, I only paid around €2 during a sale, but even at that price, I can't honestly recommend it to someone who just wants to install and play. Expect crashes, compatibility issues, and technical problems before you even get to enjoy the masterpiece underneath. It's also disappointing to see publishers continue selling old games in broken states without updating them for modern systems. In my opinion, digital storefronts should require games to meet basic compatibility standards before continuing to sell them. Despite all of that... Assassin's Creed is still one of the greatest games ever made. The atmosphere, the music, the cities, Altaïr, and the feeling of being an Assassin are timeless. It's a true GOAT and a piece of gaming history. The game deserves 10/10. The PC support from Ubisoft deserves 2/10.
Nothing is true, but not everything is permitted. I wish I could say that this game is an easy recommendation, but I am afraid it has aged like spoiled curd more than milk. There are some aspects of the game that are worth going for if you want to experience a humble beginning, but man, it's so repetitive and has so much friction with just having fun. The Good: Excellent vibe, great philosophical story, very underrated Arabic and Crusader setting & decent parkour with a minor skill ceiling. The Bad: Extremely repetitive, no achievement, and a lot of collectibles that are not tracked by the game, so good luck if you miss one. The last act ruins the pacing. If I were writing this review when the game came out, it would be a solid 7/10, but as of writing the review, it's a 5/10. I am afraid this game is only for hardcore fans.
I really thoroughly enjoyed this game. It's by far my favorite game in the AC franchise. Are its controls clunky? Yes. Are its graphics outdated? Extremely. Can Altair swim? No. At least, not in this game. And yet... Altair is the sole reason to give the game a try. That said, the game cannot handle modern hardware without some tweaks, as Ubisoft was too lazy to implement a fully functioning PC port. If you have an NVIDIA GPU, limit it to 59 FPS in control panel. And whatever the AMD equivalent is, do likewise. Enjoy the greatest game in the franchise, God bless.
What a journey to the origins of the Assasin's Creed series. Even though I finished the game, I can't really recommend it. First issue appeared right after instalation - game instantly crashed after starting. After few fanmade patches it finally ran. But then further problems showed. First - you have to remember to launch the game only with the vsync enabled. Second - it turns out the game doesn't have subtitles, which was quite annoying. Some dialogues are quite quiet, making it difficult to hear and understand what characters are saying. Fortunately I managed to find another fanmade patch for this online. In the term of gameplay - the game is incredibly repetitive and lacks variety. By the end I was exhausted and eagerly awaiting the story finale. It was nice to learn the story of the Assasin's origins and Altair's rise, but at what cost...
The game crashes on start-up and requires additional files made by fans to run ... that alone is a do not recommend. Atmosphere is cool. But its so repetitive. Good thing its short.
This back in the mid to late 2000's was one of those games I found most interesting in terms of concept. Is it still worth a look today? Yes, the parkour is still fantastic, the core concept and setting is still great. Set during the Crusades with cities like Acre, Dalmascus and Jerusalem make for a great setting. There are drawbacks, gathering info prior to the Assassination is very repetitive though the PC version does have a bigger variance vs the console versions. The Assassinations themselves are brilliant especially if you are able to get it done clean. For those looking to 100%, the game has a lot of collectables and it will get annoying to 100% that file for essentially no reward, something fixed in the sequels. The major one is to get the game to boot without any mods, this requires you switch off your wifi or ethernet in the settings, not difficult but the only way to play with steam features in play and it is single player only, so this is fine. Or and I did this while collecting the collectables, you can go to the gear icon on steam go down to browse local files and boot it from one of 3 launchers in the root file, it will boot while online but will not connect to steam, I used this to play windowed mode while collecting the collectables so i could watch youtube on the side. alt and enter at the same time will flip between windowed and full screen. The normal way of booting will make the game attempt to connect to old Ubisoft Connect servers that don't exist and it will freeze on the logo. Overall I still enjoyed the campaign all these years later, I like the modern day story and I like Altair's character and voice actor (yes I thought the actor did a good job and he should not be replaced should a remake come in the future) it has it's issues but is a good starting point for the series. It says 2.6 hours played because I played mostly offline and now it's online it's not counting it and on a 1st boot it did let me play for awhile and that's where that time comes from, in reality I've put in over 20 hours completing my save. PS: The game does have controller support for Xbox 360 controllers, not mentioned on steam but go into settings in game and the option is there. To get my ps5 controller to work I have DualsenseCompanion app that converts it to Xbox 360 inputs.
How to make Assassin's Creed I playable 2. (XBOX Controller): - Eagle eye: Y - Push: B - Blend: A - Punch: X - High profile: RT - Target Focus: LT
