Arizona Sunshine 2 is more of the same from the first game in its series, although starring a different protagonist and now a loveable dog companion that quickly becomes your greatest ally and proves why dogs are called "man's best friend." You can always trust your doggy sidekick, or so you think, and the game has a huge focus on the dog being part of the story now where he is central to a surprisingly heartfelt and emotional story about loneliness and companionship in an apocalypse. The protagonist is constantly talking to himself and someone he calls "Fred" and this manifests as the game including the same style of cheesy humor and one-liner quips of the first game that aren't really funny, and if anything, makes it seem like it's the same exact protagonist from the first game where they are both very identical as a poor man's Deadpool. But when I think more about it, I can forgive the dialogue choice. It comes across as a psychological coping mechanism combined with the protagonist's immediate attachment to the dog where it helps shield himself from a brutal isolated and traumatic reality, especially once you come to the twist to realize just who and what has been the root cause of your personal suffering as seemingly the only human alive. With the dog itself, I also think his implementation was actually an answer the complaints many players had in the first game, where they then spun the story around him to better fit him into the game as a proper story element. Common complaints with the first game were its lack of inventory space, lack of opportunity to try out all the different guns, and ammunition running low too frequently where players sometimes felt helpless or put into inescapable situations. Buddy helps rectify all of those issues. While I much prefer how other VR shooters handle the inventory system, like that of Half-Life: Alyx, I guess those like this one are more immersive in that you can only realistically holster so many guns at a time, but Arizona Sunshine as a franchise seems to love the idea of implementing so many different firearms into the game that there's no easy way to test out all of the weaponry during the campaign with how it is handled. Especially since the game does not waste any time in just tossing more weapons at you as you play through its campaign. Much like the first game, you can stuff two items (like grenades, food, or melee weapons) into the slots on your gloves, a larger gun straps over your shoulder, and then your two secondary guns on either side of your hip. The dog itself now offers additional slots for guns, where you can insert grenades and weapons into his vest, but he should have had some pouches for extra ammo magazines for those parts of the game where you have stockpiled enough of it that you can't collect anymore into your own pouches. It's never a bad idea to let the player collect even more ammunition for those parts of the game where you have to battle a horde or something. I can't recall if the first game had it as a feature, but you can resize the holsters which I opted to do as I thought it was a bit too big by default. VR gaming still suffers from this issue where the feedback sometimes thinks you want to grab something that you don't want to grab, and so holsters that are too large or not properly adjusted compared to the location of the ammo belt on your person may cause you to grab one or the other over what you intended. I suppose you can always use the other setting for reloading your guns automatically where you just smack the controllers into your chest so that you don't have to try and manually insert the magazines and rack it, but this probably still results in detection issues sometimes if my past experiences with VR gaming is any indication. Plus, I'm not trying to look like a gorilla pounding its chest any time I need to reload. The dog's existence also negates any difficulty as he is rather overpowered. Immune to drawing any attention from the zombies as well as being targeted, you can sic him on a target of choice to which he'll pounce and rip the zombie apart. It's effectively a stunlock that results in the zombie being combo'd to a relatively quick death, and is particularly useful against zombies that have helmets which shield them from a bullet or your melee attack. He helps conserve your ammunition and the durability of your melee weapons as you can quite literally just have him attack sole zombies or slower zombies one after another. Ammo is still commonly scattered around each chapter but perhaps one way the game tries to add challenge is that there will be quite a few horde ambushes in later chapters and this can definitely extinguish your supply. In fact, I think the hordes became a bit too common that it started to get annoying, but the gore and gunplay in an immersive VR experience helps keep it fun long enough to beat the game. The campaign now supports two player cooperative that is also cross platform and there's a newly added horde mode which just has you surviving wave after wave of zombies and is perfect for more mindless slaughter. This adds some replay value and allows you to play with a friend, partner, or some random person, and it was funny seeing how other people react and play the game and how it differs from myself. The cooperative mode just doesn't adapt to the story very well and is not its own separate campaign and so this can break the immersion for some, where you or your cooperative partner are just there and not really acknowledged when you consider that the story can have themes of isolation for the main character. The story itself, as aforementioned, was heartfelt and emotional and better than I expected it to be given how the first game played where it felt more like a demonstration to the capabilities of VR, although the ending is too ambiguous in the final chaos and left to interpretation when I much prefer developers to state what happened canonically instead of leaving it on a cliffhanger or shrugging and making us have to theorize to feel that sense of closure. There's only like three maps you'll actually explore in that they differ from biome or environment, and one of which is another sewer. I don't know what it is about sewers that apparently pairs well with zombies but every video game or zombie movie or TV show wants to have sewer exploration and it's also a bit overused like the zombie as a horror or hostile device. As far as VR games go, I'd say this is a franchise that players should try. It isn't the best in the current selection, but it'll be fun to go around and shoot up zombies in a VR screen. I didn't notice any bugs or technical issues or glitches, and it's overall a much more polished version of the first game. You just need space so that you aren't knocking over a lamp or anything as you are swinging a katana.
Yes and yes. One of the best action VR game out here with Half-life Alyx. Less weapon in the second one but more "special" one that makes a huge difference (aka the big shotgun or grenade launcher). And this one, you have a doggo, even more better (and more useful than dogmeat).
my 1660 super cant play this game, so if you have it uhh dont make the same mistake as me. but the starting screen looked pretty cool.
Good game but I can't recommend this to people who use the quest 2 for steam vr like me
The game is too fiddly, the controls way to clunky when you need them smooth. No pushing away Zombies when you have no ammo and no melee weapon. Try to take a corner and the game does an 180 all of the sudden.
i loved this game it has such a good story and i love the ending the only thing i wish was that it was longer there better be a arizona sunshine 3 at somepoint it ran pretty good through just steam link and i dont use ethernet or a cord it was a bit laggy during some of those parts that have the giant hordes but only when the zombies are close to you other wise this was my fav vr game ever
