Bulletstorm VR is a brutally creative action shooter that puts players in the ass-kicking boots of the hotheaded space mercenary Grayson Hunt as he shoots, kicks, and leashes all he can see across a hostile world in Virtual Reality!

It’s entirely appropriate that I only paid half for the game since HALF OF THE GAME IS MISSING. Remember the T-Rex section? Gone. Remember the maneaters? Gone. Remember the section with the boss plant? Gone. Remember all the delightfully racist commentary by Serrano contrasted with Ishi and Grey? Gone. The game gives you the option to preserve the old dialogue with Mature mode, but what's the point of that if you're just going to cut out any content that is actually “offensive”? Some of these parts are replaced by Trishka sections, which WOULD have been neat if there was any dialogue whatsoever. It's just eerily quiet, which is jarring in this game. There are some things that I actually did like about this version, like how they changed up where the weapons first appear, how the chain gun (forgot the name) can be rotated to fire vertically or diagonally instead of just horizontally, how the Screamer pistol can more easily deliver headshots due to the laser sight, and best of all, the ability to dual-wield any two weapons in the game (yes, seriously, you can). However, the fact that they basically removed half the game despite providing the option to see all the offensive stuff, means I feel obligated to leave a negative review.
Experienced on the Meta Quest 3
You can view my full review here: https://youtu.be/vq30Gr3tP6E I enjoyed playing this game. I do recommend it. However, I also understand why it's currently sitting on a Mixed Review status. This is an underwhelming port of a beloved classic. At the end of the day though, I do think it's a competent port. If you're a fan of Bulletstorm, it's a new way to enjoy it. If you're not a fan, it's still something different than the usual VR shooter. The main thing about this game is that it's a skill shot challenge romp. You'll want to get creative in the different ways to cause maximum carnage. You have an energy leash, kicks, slides, charged shots, and environmental kills that lead up to a hundred different combos to kill enemies. This is the fun part of the game and you get rewarded for being creative. However, the translation to VR just feels a bit off. Weapon handling is not that good. The visuals just do not pop in VR due to poor lighting and poor textures. Enemy AI is dated. If you try to play this game like a normal FPS, you'll find several enemies feel like bullet sponges. You'll also probably run out of bullets. The worst sin though is that this game has deleted scenes or shortened scenes and those baffling decisions lead to the pace of the game feeling off. Listen, I don't care about the censorship part either way. I think people upset about that have got problems in their lives that I don't have the time to get into. In either event, many scenes were added back and there's now a toggle in the settings to turn on or off the censored parts or the gore in the game. Game is running on the Unreal Engine 4. On my RTX 3080, I was getting mostly 90 fps on mostly high graphical settings. I do recommend turning up the brightness as the game is too dark otherwise (at least on the Meta Quest 3). I also turned down contrast a bit. I recommend manually toggling resolution scale from Steam VR as well. You have full locomotion and teleportation available, along with smooth or snap turning and handedness. All the settings, except resolution scale, are there. You can play comfortably seated. Rate 6.5/10. It took me 6.5 hours to beat the game, so you may want to wait on a sale.
I bought this game! March 2025 I keep trying to love Bulletstorm VR. I've bought it twice (on sale), and I'm about to get it refunded a second time. I love the graphics here, but there is still just something not right in the gun play. Guns feel balloony and not accurate. The controls just don't feel tight. I don't even mind that (allegedly) parts of the game are missing (I've had to keep playtime below 2hr for refund). Seriously, Seriously, Seriously, I have waaaaaaay more fun playing the EA (god do I HATE EA) flat screen version into 3D VR mode through Vorpx!!!! Bulletstorm in Vorpx kicks A**!!!!! So if Bulletstorm in Vorpx feels sooooo good, I can't understand why the Devs with the VR version struggled to get this one right? ---- sigh
Played wireless via Virtual Desktop on a Quest 3: after all the quality of life updates, this game freakin' *rocks* in VR! I've heard this was considered to be a 'bad port' when it first released, but the devs stuck with it, and what we've got now is *definitely* worth checking out if you're into this genre.
Apparently used to not work, but when I got it it was on sale and they just patched it, it work pretty well now and is pretty cool in VR. If you can get this for cheap or on sale, and like some good arcade shooting in VR, check this one out.
Being able to replay the old flat game immersed in VR truly is an experience you can't explain. One needs to experience it themselves to understand how amazing it feels like to pull and slice the enemies using your own two hands! It took a while for the devs to polish this game since launch but now that all the bugs are gone I definitely recommend this game!
Very good, very fun Devs did a ton to fix the game
