Just played the short but very clear tutorial and the first battle proper (Chaeronea) A hard fought win thanks for Phillip II crushing the Greek left though Alexander in charge of the Macedonian left was in a lot of trouble . Some very bad initiative rolls but fortunate combat rolls saw the Macedonians win 34/20 but this was with the difficulty eased down to represent the even chance MP setting rather than the harder SP setting. Great tension with the visible die rolls (Alexander very narrowly avoided being cut down on two occasions). Highly recommended especially for boardgame fans of games such as the Great Battles of History series and a ton of replayability.
Fantastic Ancients hex and counter game. The AI feels intelligent and reacts to your formations well. The game is relatively hard, but not punishingly so. I enjoy the initiative system a lot, as gaining the momentum of 2 turns in a row is very effective. Huge fan of how the multiplayer is cross-platform with the mobile version, which is also phenomenal.
EDIT #2: Please see the Developer response attached below. Thank you for the response. EDIT # 3: I do recommend this game ! The game takes me back to the old paper map and cardboard counter days of my youth. To play, you move counters/units on a map-board to engage enemy counters/units in combat. This is done to achieve a victory over the enemy to win the game. It is a pretty good game but has some flaws. EDIT: NOW, with one less flaw then I thought ! There is no "Quit" button, for one. EDIT: I found out that one uses "Alt+F4" to quit. Still clunky, but it was my fault for not noticing this earlier. For two, in the tutorial, I wasn't able to go back to the previous screen which would have been helpful although there was an "Undo" button for actions taken. I wasn't able to access the History files. Maybe this is because I've only been in the Tutorial. But it seems to me that the "Main Menu" button (under which the History files would be accessed) should be prominent on every screen, Tutorial or not. After eliminating the last enemy unit in the Tutorial, I couldn't advance the winning unit into the hex. I don't think the game froze but the combat result called for an advance and the game didn't allow me to do that. It seems like a glitch in the game if there is no text indicating that the Tutorial is over. Maybe I'm a little OCD but there should be an indication that the Tutorial is over. It is a good game but I think it needs (EDIT) a little (less) attention, (less) fixing, and a few(er) clarifications. EDIT: My apologies for my earlier mistakes. I like reading the Historical data included with the game. It is a good game well worth the price for anyone who is a fan of Alexander's Battles.
A solid hex and counter wargame with a good AI, fantastic graphics, and a smooth user interface experience. The rules aren't so complex to turn off newer players, but you have to apply real strategy when you're playing. A real gem!
Excited to learn and explore. Wish quality games like this were more popular! Somebody do a Twitch or a Stream or something for this gem! (Can you tell I'm old and non-technological from my nomenclature?) Though I suspect it's mostly old grognards, like - shout-out to the old wargamer.com crowd. That's where this should really be being talked up! And if you want more publicity/sales - maybe go in under the Matrix/Slitherine banner - other than (social?) media that's the other main way I thought you could begin to get the (positive) notoriety that this game deserves. All in all, very grateful games such as this are still being made at all! One desired update - a Save without Quitting Feature would be very helpful.
If you are a fan of hex and counter games this is one you will enjoy. The system is like a 'simple battles'. The rules are clear and enforced well. The AI seems to play by the rules and puts up a fair fight. The graphic are well done for what they are meant to communicate. If a hex and counter thinking mans game is up your ally, this is worth the very fair price. Just do it. You will be happy, I am !
Very pleasant wargame without complications and delivers a fun and engaging method of playing Alexandre campaigns. The agglomerate scoring method is a nice touch to grasp the feel of how things are progressing. Visually is appealing and major bonus for showing the die rolls, something that many similar products don't do. It makes a tangible reach and a major difference to set it apart. Overall - highly recommended if you like hexagon and counter style wargames.
Excellent if you want to learn Hex and Counter games.
I bought this on mobile and was so impressed with the first battle I tried that I decided I wanted to buy it on PC as well so I could record videos of myself playing it for my YouTube channel. IMO this game is a great way to ease yourself into ancients / medieval hex-and-counter tabletop wargames. The reason tabletop hex-and-counter wargames are cool is that they can cover much more obscure / niche conflicts for which there wouldn't be a large enough market to justify the cost of developing a PC game depicting them. If this developer was able to adapt his engine to handle other wargames like GBoH, the Men of Iron series, etc. I could see him getting a large following.
A great hex and counter wargame with good AI.
