TLDR: Outdated design leading to unfun gameplay I feel bad writing a bad review for An American Werewolf in L.A. as it is clearly a lower-budget passion project, but the game is just not worth your money, and here is why: The gameplay is the standout offender here, with an unremappable control scheme that is horrid and unintuitive, not only that with how stiff the controls are the game just feels bad to play. Each time you attack you are locked in place for long uncancelable attacks (god help you if you do the three-hit combo) each with a pitiful range, the enemies, usually just outside this range are then able to hit you with their attacks. On level two bullets that come from off-screen that you are meant to dodge, jump over, or block. However, the bullets are spaced out just far enough that if you dodge them you get hit by the next barrage of bullets, the jump is so low that you need to be a timing god to make it consistently, and blocking only reduces the damage not preventing it. There is a heal move that you do by doing nothing for a few seconds but it heals extremely slowly as to be useless and takes several seconds to activate, most of the time trying to use it will see you lose more health due to off-screen enemy ranged attacks. On top of that if you die three times you get booted back to the main menu losing all progress, I get that they are trying to appeal to the hardcore arcade crowd but this should have not made it past the testing phase, the game needs both a level and difficulty select. Additionally, when you die in multiplayer the camera acts as if both players are still alive and will not follow the living player leading to a quick death. The game stages consist of endlessly spawning enemies that you have to survive for a fixed amount of time, which feels amateurish, I went in thinking the game would be akin to Double Dragon. The game feels like it was made in 6 months for a game jam and never polished up beyond that. The graphics are mixed, the backgrounds consist of good pixel art and the characters are in a simpler style which kinda clashes. The sound and soundtrack are also mixed, the tracks for the soundtrack are good but loop far too often, becoming grating quickly. There is this horrendous sound effect for the car that is played way too loud, again how did this make it past playtesting? As far as the story goes it honestly was background noise, I have not seen An American Werewolf in London so any reference to that film meant nothing to me. I only played this for ~30 minutes and got to stage three before turning it off to play something else, but if one were to put their mind to it the game would probably only take 2 1/2 hours to beat accounting for ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ difficulty. Needs more time in the oven, don't get this.
Bro just wanted to surf. A fun little homage to An American Werewolf in London. The last two levels were somewhat challenging which made the experience more fun. After beating it in 30 minutes I don't see much replay value. I think it would be nice if they implemented a score system, otherwise, I don't see myself playing this game for a while. Maybe wait for a sale because $5 is a little much for this game.
Fun little beat 'em up game. I find it quite challenging, but I suppose that makes it more enjoyable (for real - when are you supposed to have time to regenerate?). Funny story too.
Easy and short brawler with a werewolf and his blonde girlfriend driving a red sports car. The gameplay is straightforward and similar to other beat'em-ups. The main difference is that you don't have much freedom. It all takes place on one plane, thus you can only move left and right. Because there are only five stages, the game will not take long to complete. They're also very small, as each stage is a single screen that moves left and right for a few steps. On the other side, the pixel art looks quite nice. It’s a bit shame some stages are boring and don’t allow for much detail. It starts great with a street and posters from famous movies. Then you move to Chicago, which suggested you will visit famous cities. This is not the case because the next two stages take place in a gas station in the middle of nowhere and boring rocks of the Grand Canyon. The character can punch, jump, block, and dash. Enemies aren't like sponges that absorb a lot of hits. A few swipes are enough to get rid of the majority of them. While opponents change in each stage, they only come in two variants: melee or ranged. While melee is fairly typical, ranged takes a more cautious approach. When they shoot, use the dash to dodge the projectile. Unlike other games, the goal of each stage is to last two minutes. You must do this with three lives. Because you will get hit during a combat, you can heal by remaining still for a few seconds. This makes the game very easy, especially if you use the generous dash. It allows you to move out of the way even when you’re in the middle of a punch. When you select English, a few bits of untranslated text remain in the main menu, but this is the only exception. There’s not a lot of text or story anyway. All you get a few lines in the first and last stage. Also, you have no control over speech bubbles, which is unpleasant. If you're a slow reader, the bubbles will fly by before you can read them. They barely provide enough time to read them once. Smaller downside is lack of extras. Nothing gets unlocked after you beat the game and there are no achievements.
Short and intense game. If you liked old arcades this is right up your alley. Its difficulty is reminiscent of those arcades as well, so be ready for a real challenge!
очень плохо. второй уровень пули летят из за экрана даже не видно врагов.
Went in expecting a fun old school side scrolling werewolf beat em up. Got a awful old school 'semi' side scrolling werewolf unfinished Demo. Pass on this one. Even at 50% or more you'll be luck to get 5 minutes of actual enjoyment out of it due to the tedious game-play and rough control input.
