Neat idea, fun gameplay loop... Cloud saves added. Feels a bit like Alien Swarm, but adds roguelite mechanics. Performance is much better now on Steam Deck and Ally X. Controller inputs in menu and shops needs a bit more refinement.
Ammo and Oxygen is a tense, methodical, and atmosphere-driven survival experience that blends top-down shooter mechanics with harsh resource management and roguelike progression. Developed and published by Juvty Worlds, the game drops players onto a hostile alien planet where survival is never guaranteed and every decision carries weight. Rather than emphasizing constant action or power fantasy, Ammo and Oxygen is built around vulnerability, scarcity, and uncertainty, creating an experience that feels deliberately oppressive and rewarding in equal measure. The game’s setting establishes its tone immediately. You awaken alone amid the ruins of a failed expedition on a distant world, surrounded by abandoned facilities, alien terrain, and the remnants of something that went terribly wrong. The narrative unfolds quietly through environmental storytelling, logs, and terminals rather than scripted cutscenes, allowing the sense of mystery to grow naturally as you explore. This understated approach works well, reinforcing the feeling of isolation and making the world feel indifferent to your survival. The planet itself becomes a character, shifting between industrial interiors, frozen landscapes, swamps, and open wastelands, each with its own threats and environmental pressures. Gameplay revolves around a careful balance between combat, exploration, and resource preservation. At its core, Ammo and Oxygen is a top-down shooter, but unlike more arcade-style entries in the genre, gunfights are slow, deliberate, and often best avoided. Ammunition is limited, oxygen drains constantly, batteries power vital equipment, and careless engagement can quickly spiral into disaster. Enemies are dangerous not just because of their numbers, but because every bullet spent and every second wasted brings you closer to failure. This creates a constant low-level tension where even small encounters feel meaningful, and retreat is often the smartest option. Combat rewards positioning, patience, and situational awareness rather than aggression. Weapons range from basic firearms to heavier and experimental tools, each with clear advantages and drawbacks. Powerful weapons may deal significant damage but slow movement or consume precious resources, forcing players to consider whether raw firepower is worth the cost. Supplemental equipment such as shields, night vision, or stealth-oriented tools expand tactical options and allow different playstyles to emerge, but none of them eliminate the underlying pressure of scarcity. Success often comes from learning when not to fight as much as mastering how to fight. Procedural generation plays a major role in replayability. Level layouts, enemy placements, and resource locations shift between runs, ensuring that memorization alone cannot carry you to victory. The passage of time adds another layer of urgency, as darkness makes enemies more aggressive and environments more dangerous. Each run becomes a calculated risk, balancing the desire to push deeper for better rewards against the growing threat of exhaustion and ambush. While death is frequent, progress is not entirely lost; persistent upgrades unlocked between runs provide gradual growth without undermining the game’s core challenge. Visually, Ammo and Oxygen opts for clarity and mood over spectacle. The art direction emphasizes bleak sci-fi environments, harsh lighting, and shadow-heavy spaces that heighten tension and limit visibility. Darkness is not merely aesthetic but a gameplay mechanic, turning light sources into critical tools rather than cosmetic effects. Sound design reinforces this atmosphere effectively, using ambient noise, distant creature sounds, and mechanical hums to keep players uneasy even when no immediate threat is visible. Silence itself becomes unsettling, reminding you that danger may be just out of sight. The option for local cooperative play introduces a different dynamic, transforming solitary survival into a shared struggle. Managing resources with multiple players can reduce some of the loneliness, but it introduces its own challenges as coordination becomes essential and mistakes affect the entire group. While co-op slightly softens the game’s oppressive tone, it adds moments of chaotic tension and teamwork that fit well within the overall design. Some technical roughness remains, particularly around controls and interface polish, but these issues generally do not overshadow the core experience. Ultimately, Ammo and Oxygen succeeds because it commits fully to its identity. It is not a power fantasy, nor is it a fast-paced action romp. Instead, it is a survival-focused roguelike that demands restraint, planning, and respect for its systems. For players who enjoy games where tension is sustained through scarcity, where atmosphere matters as much as mechanics, and where progress feels earned rather than granted, Ammo and Oxygen offers a compelling and often punishing journey. It stands as a thoughtful entry in the survival roguelike space, proving that fear and challenge can emerge not from overwhelming spectacle, but from the simple question of whether you have enough air and ammunition to make it to the next room. Rating: 7/10
