I can't even start with how much I love this game. This game showed me that games can both look good and have amazing gameplay and personality. Having personally never played games like it before, im so glad this game was my introduction to the genre, as i will certainly be diving deeper. Not only that, this games DLC is the best DLC of any game ive ever played. The sheer creativity and personality shown is nothing short of astonishing, and i still find myself listening to the soundtrack or ocasionally replaying the game, and every time, i am reminded just how good this game is. Thank you Amid Evil, and thank you New Blood.
Visually this game is amazing, one of the rare games where I would stop what I'm doing just to appreciate the environment. The combat is pretty standard boomer shooter, I think the weapons are a bit more interesting than most boomer shooters however in terms of their special effects. Bosses aren't very interesting. Music is good. Each world has it's own set of enemies, and while for the most part they differ in just stats (health, movement speed, etc.) some have interesting effects specific to them for example one enemy can reflect your shots. Overall the gameplay I feel is on par with other good boomer shooters (Dusk, Boltgun, etc.) but the visuals lift the game above those imo, so I'd definitely recommend if you enjoy boomer shooters.

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,402 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.
MID Evil: In a modern age of boomer shooters, Amid Evil commits gaming's worst sin: No, not being a bad game - it's actually good (at what little) it does! I'm talking about the sin of being boring. Selaco, Cultic, Trepang2, Coven, Doom are games that all have an interesting gameplay hook that keeps you going. This game doesnt have one and is bare bones in comparison; Run the stage, kill the boss, repeat again and again until there's nothing more to do and I feel YOU the reader can spend your money on much more memorable games to prevent you from being AMID an EVIL experience. Here's why:

Things I Dislike:
--- Boring: As I said above, run the stage, kill the boss, repeat until there's nothing more to do. The gameplay is move and hold click for several hours. AI is so dumb, they line themselves up and all the enemies die by you simply holding click over them until they're not standing upright. -- Bare: There are just 7 weapons and you'll be quite familiar with them really quickly as they're basically your pistol, machine gun, shotgun etc in wizard fantasy form. 7 Stages to complete (I've played 2hrs and I'm up to Stage 5 already!). There's no story or narrative; You're the good guy who needs to kill the bad guy to save the world - That's it. There's a horde mode with a 3 different levels, but I'm not wasting time in there because it adds nothing new that the campaign doesn't already give you. -- Bog Standard AI: Boss battles that you can win purely because the boss' moveset is slow and predictable. Enemies are deaf; I've often opened a door to unveil a miniboss just for us to both stand there looking at each other while I slowly whittle it's health away from a distance. They can't swim, they just walk at the bottom as if they're on land, so they'll often get stuck in pools while you essentially have the ability to fly (swim) around them. Some do have abilities that try to surprise you, but most of the time the AI is just chase + attack. Jumping enemies dont mind jumping to their deaths, into hazards or getting stuck in parts of the map as long as they get a quick sniff of your collogne. Flying enemies are the hardest, but again, it's just chase + attack for all enemies so they kind of line themselves up. -- Very Basic Animations: Game could look and feel a lot more lively with some better animations. I understand it's meant to be 'old school' but that's no excuse for lazy-looking animation. - Taking all your weapons away every time you start a new stage: Only just to get them all back 3 minutes later. The levels aren't long so what's the point? - Lack lustre soundtrack: This game drew me in because it looked like an awesome heavy metal album that you could play! What we got was generic medieval fantasy music. I've never really been a big fan of Andrew Hulshult despite all the praise they've earned in the past, I feel like they've done Dusk, Iron Lung movie and maybe 1 or 2 other good OSTs across their career but most come off sounding a bit basic to me. I'm quite aware of their expansive works on games, this isnt even the weakest OST they've done but games like this need some energy and some BANGERS! Something most soundtrack composers often forget - but the person who edited the DLC trailer didn't forget, and that's the trailer they have play first on the Base Game's store page - how interesting! On Youtube, views on most of the OST tracks cap at about 12k views so no one who hears it is really coming back to listen to it either.
Things I Like:
++ Decent Graphics and Art Style: I actually like some of the designs, level architecture and enemies in this game. The later stages look lovely. The key art by Chris Pollitt is awesome and the DLC key art by Halil Ural is so badass, I had to save the DLC wallpaper my desktop rotation. And every once in a while you'll find a nice view worthy of a screenshot. + Combat: Kinda hard to mess up in an old school boomer shooter, but it's even harder to make it pop. Here, it's functional, with no faults other than the AI side of things, but also no bells or whistles to keep it interesting other than an alternate fire for each weapon that charges with kills. You can get an 'overkill' with the weapons which often just means you killed them slightly harder than the rest I guess. + Secrets: As always, there's a plethora of secrets in each level. Some are so easy you wonder why they called it a secret at all. Others are so hard to find, you'll need a guide to find them all. Not really my thing tbh, but who doesn't like stumbling upon a secret room every now and then?
Fist review I'm writing for steam. I've played through the campaign and DLC on hard difficulty. Having played through the whole game, I'm pretty confused at the high praise this game got. To start, art design has a unique gothic direction and level design was varied enough to keep me engaged through most of my playthrough. I can also somewhat appreciate the minimal approach to gameplay similar to old school shooters. Even on a high difficulty, gameplay is still pretty relaxed and I found myself playing this game while I listen to sports or a podcast. I would not say this game is bad, but nothing about it really impressed me and there were definitely some annoying aspects which I bet will turn people away. 1. The guns - Anyone who has played the game for a few hours will have unlocked/found every weapon the game has to offer. Without alt fire or interesting weapon quirks, the dryness of the gun play will really hit after the 10 hour mark. - Weapons are slow to switch and slow to start firing, often input will be lost after switching weapons and I have to spam lmb to get a shot out. 2 Enemies - Main campaign is split into zones with three levels and one boss fight each. Each zone has its own set of enemy units. You would think this means fighting a wide variety of enemy AI, but this is false. All zones have set of cookie cutter AI: A fodder type that shoots at you, a fodder type that rushes you, a tank, and floating goofballs. This will repeat for all 7 (I believe) zones until the game ends. Instead of being excited to enter new zones, I found myself mentally checking out and barging into most fights that play out the same way anyway. The most engaging enemy unit for me as the guy with the weird leggings that can dodge roll in the sun temple. - Enemy design is pretty good in first few zones, then it's all downhill from there. For the remaining 80% of the games, enemy design is unpolished, cluttered, comical, or straight up hideous with a few exceptions. The most agregious cases being the fish that looks like two pieces of scrap metal and most of the air units. Sound design for enemies are mostly high pitched screeching and metal grinding, will grate on your nerves after a couple hours. - Half the bosses have a one or two attacks to choose from and it takes only a minute to figure out how to cheese them, though there are a few decent ones (final boss is not one of them). 3 Gameplay - Game has a seizure when you are trying to get out of the water, takes 2 to 5 tries typically. - Secrets are not worth looking for, don't bother with them since you will find them by accident anyway. - Health, mana pickups, and enemies are sprinkled in maps without much thought, leading to very choppy pacing where difficulty suddenly spikes because you are suddenly starved for health or mana because the devs decided to drop 15 enemies after a random turn in a hallway, while large rooms filled with pickups will only spawn 5 fodder with two healthy units. - Adding to the previous point, the player's arsenal is also too weak to handle more than 6 enemies at once, in the few cases where the game does decide to give you a fair amount of enemies to handle, the most efficient way to dispach them is to spam orbs until everything dies. It's not worth spending 5 minutes circle strafing and wittling them down with your assortment of pea shooters and tazers, especially when the gameplay is already next to brain dead. I think this game is an example of the degeneration of the boomer shooter genre back to obscurity. After Doom Eternal, there seemed to be hope for the revitalization of the genre and I was pretty optimistic. There were a few genuinely good successors like Cultic and Turbo Overkill. However, in the last couple years, most of the games I have played of this genre turned out to be mediocre factory quality games that feel more like trend chasing for quick money. The devs of this games has contributed better games to this genre so the fact they were willing to nonchalantly pump this one out may speak to their change in their priorities, but I'm speculating at this point. So final review 5/10 for main game. DLC is more of the same, dull gameplay and pretty levels, Bosses are more annoying to fight. 4/10.
One of the better Retro throwbacks out there. Feels like a spiritual sequel to Heretic & Hexen. Great atmosphere, level design, and killing stuff feels good.
