Well...okay then. First the positives: this game looks fantastic; better cutscenes than many more modern games; great atmosphere and engaging conceptually from the start; and it feels good to play. Now...though...a couple realities: 1) There is an absensce of clarity about the controls out of the gate. No tutorial, and if you use a controller other than the X-box one the mapping seems off. The controls are smooth once you figure them out, but a 2 minute tutorial to make them familiar would have been a benefit. 2) Atmosphere is awesome, but at some point something needs to happen, and 60+ minutes in the repetative meandering from dark place to dark place was tough to tolerate. It would have been less a problem if the pace had been faster, or if there had been more agency in the design, but as it is it feels like you walk in a state of confusion (in itself not a bad thing) and have little real active interaction with the environment (also not awful if offset). The problem is that a lot of little things like that combine to make it...well, dare I suggest...boring? I will likely play it again, when I have the time to absorb it more, but it just wasn't very compelling. Not out of the gate.
