Wow, really beautiful looking, entertaining and unique VR Tower Defense Strategy game! Jumping into a first-person view and battle the enemies is just awesome! Check my pre-release gameplay video and you will understand what I mean: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NwnF0cR4RU Here are my thoughts: Well, Alchemist Defender VR really surprised me. I have never been a big fan of tower defence games so far to be honest, but if you do all stuff right in a Virtual Reality game, its like a whole new genre! With immersive gameplay, beautiful graphics as well as environment, and also this first-person perspective you can jump into any moment during gameplay, Alchemist Defender does something totally new and unique! Starting off, the graphics (made in Unreal engine) are stunning. The sounds and background music are pleasing and perfect for this type of game. Main menu is cool with lots of stuff you can interact with, just like you expect from a VR-game. Well, so far I have nothing to complaing about, and I have played this title for more that an hour now. The "miniature world" that you see from above is super vivid, colorful and detailed. You begin by building some towers, turrets and cannons before the waves of evil Rat-Humanoids arrive. The same second it starts, you realize this is going to be intense. So intense that your towers are not enough, so you grab your hammer or a pistor, teleport yourself into the world and start a battle on your own in first person view :) And it gets more and more busy for every wave, at the same time as the game gets even better! Honestly, the first moment you "slide" into the frist person perspective is one of the coolest VR experiences I have had so far. I really can´t describe it, its just super-immersive! Anyway, the gameplay is nice, the level of difficulty is increasing and after around 8-10 waves things become really serious. I think this game is a challenge even for the most skilled tower-defense gamer out there. While playing Alchemist Defender VR without capturing the gameplay (as I did in the video above), the game runs very well on my GTX 980 Ti and I could probably add some supersampling to get it even sharper, so even thou the graphics are stunning, you still dont need a beefy PC I guess. I will update this "review" as soon as I have played more and especially when more content gets added later on. But for now, I can truly recommend this VR game to everyone - try it and you won´t regret it! Cheers Martin, SweViver
Alchemy Defender VR, did TreeView Studios brew up a blast or did it turn out to be pretty vial? https://youtu.be/YR66qzbnU0w Puns aside, it's somewhere in the middle. I found alchemy Defender VR to be pretty mediocre. The Tower Defense mechanics are decent. Placing towers was slightly troublesome when placing near edges as the button press/release when placing the tower caused the placement to jerk. Rushed tower placements either meant a very sub optimal placement or failing to place the tower entirely. There did not seem to be any sort of creep to tower relationships. IE mortar counters slow groups, Ice counters runners etc... There were simply 3 towers. A low damage, a utility and a high damage. There was no upgrade system for towers. How do you make a TD game without the ability to upgrade your towers? That's half of the game... I would have liked to see more variety in towers and enemies. The TD aspect really needed to be fleshed out. The first person combat aspect was just bad. Enemies died at the slightest touch of the melee weapon. I could stand still and enemies would walk into the weapon and die. This is just unacceptable in any VR hack and slash. It's bad. Stop doing it devs. There is only one form of locomotion and it didn't work all that great. The only locomotion option is teleportation. Even so, I often found myself stuck in a location I could not teleport out of unless it was a considerable distance away. I can normally use either teleport or trackpad but I love having the option. This just felt clunky. Balance was also an issue. Early game my towers were often not enough making me scramble to use all my combat abilities. Late game my towers were enough to handle everything and I rarely needed to go into combat mode. There needs to be a better balance here. As I started with, Alchemy Defender VR was simply mediocre. Their attention was split between the two game modes and ultimately not enough love/polish made it into either side. It has some good ideas but ultimately the execution falls flat. It's not without hope but it would take significant updates to get this game where it needs to be to recommend.
Fun! Blends god mode with first person combat which is something we haven't seen often before. It really adds to the immersion of a tower defense VR game. If you're interested a video explaining its features: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shefEOYiytA Right now it only has one map to play, but to be able to complete it you can play for about an hour and of course since its early access, more updates and content are coming. What I really like about Alchemist Defender is that you can build your strategy in god mode and watch your cannons do its work or help them by using certain weapons to combat the monsters in first person mode. This game can get quite hard to complete after a couple of waves and you'll definitely need to pay attention or have a good strategy to complete the first level. There are some nice to haves, like I think that a more challenging first person combat mode would be nice. I'd recommend this game if you like tower defense games in general. It's fun and a nice change to play in VR. However I do think it's expensive for what's available now in early access. BUT I do hope enough people will be interested so the dev has some support to carry on its good work. Would be awesome to see this game complete with new monsters, weapons and maps.
Awesome, the best tower defense game in VR.... You can teleport down to the battle field and use short range weapons in first person ...really beautiful environment...you must see to believe....this game is fun...its a must play for those with VR....Game has been updated and UI is much better now, Game used to have 2 levels or stages with lots of incoming waves and it was really hard to beat...but the game balance has been modified and stages have been increased to 4, but each levels attack waves have been shortened to 10 waves so its much easier to beat..which I am not sure if its a good thing...
You have what can be a great game, the mechanics are great, the tower building, the first person combat system, the enviroment its all great but alot needs to be added, i do feel the price is abit high for what feels like 1 level of enemy waves (18 waves), but i do recomment because i do see what it can be. What needs to be added ~~> Bosses, more levels with the enviroment changing, different classes maybe for the first person part and upgrades to the current defences. i know some of these things are already plan on future updates so i am excited to see what this game becomes
This is a tower defense strategy game designed from ground up for Virtual Reality. In Alchemist Defender VR, you assemble your defenses whilst overlooking a village environment from above and can then change your perspective simply clicking to jump down into the environment if you wish, to engage in direct first person combat (a feature that is similar to Out of Ammo). Throughout the game you defend a door using the handheld weapons which include a hammer, pistol and bomb, and and also three available tower weapons known as Canon, Frozt and Mortar. The latter can be purchased as you can afford based on your gold count which you can increase, and placing them strategically on turrets, continuing in this manner through oncoming waves of enemies for as long as you can survive. There are a variety of enemies, and the game gets harder as you progress with more and more oncoming enemies with each wave. The graphics are great, the environment is beautiful and super detailed as is the animation. However, the gameplay is limited at this stage, and so it can become quite repetitive. Although you would expect some repetition because it is a tower defense game, there isn’t enough content at the moment to justify the price point, and so I feel it is good as a simple tower defence game but overpriced for what it actually has to offer at this stage in terms of gameplay. I think this game has a lot of potential though and could live up to the price point in the future if it is developed further, so I am looking forward to playing it again in it's prime. Suggestions include more weapons, upgrades, a changing or additional environment, more enemies, and enemies with different levels of difficulty or a more strategic way of doing battle with certain enemies. However, I have been informed since my video review that there is already plans for updates such as these, and some may have now even been added since my pre-release beta review video. https://youtu.be/B6TzJ6bus8Q
While light on content at the moment (as it is in Early Access), this title make up with its very fun and unique core gameplay. This game blends god mode tower defense and first person combat genre. in this game, you'll be trying to stop the rat humanoids from getting to the end point, and there are 2 ways to go about it: build turrets that attack nearby enemies, or you can also cast spell whereby you shrink yourself to first person mode on the battlefield where you can swing hammer or shoot at them. These spells have to be recharged after every use so you will have to alternate both ways to take them down. the graphic is great, and the music is suitable and good too. One sorely needed element is the upgrading system and more maps, but they will be added in future updates. this game has got a solid gameplay foundation. when it gets more contents, it will no doubt be one of the best VR games releasing these past months.
Great pre release , needs more wepons or upgrade trees, also a world high score bored would be great to , i like the way this is looking thumbs up :)
You can view my review & gameplay here (along with footage of the Unreal Engine Crash at the end): https://youtu.be/V-CnU-AYhqk
Experienced on the Oculus Rift with Touch Controllers
So I saw this game on sale recently for $4.99 USD and I almost pulled the trigger. Then I saw this game as part of a VR bundle and was excited most for this game. Well ... now I'm just happy that I didn't pull the trigger and I'm only out about .50 cents USD versus the $4.99 USD. This game is bad. However, there are a few nice things about it. First of all, there are 4 beautiful environments to view, especially when you're playing in God mode (over the top mode). Really nice work on these assets. Also, in each of the four levels, you have different classes to play (different weapons) to go along with fighting different enemies. It's neat how you go from placing turrets in God mode, then go first person mode to fight the horde. You can teleport around in first person mode and also snap turn throughout. Unfortunately, the gameplay itself is horrible. It's dull & repetitive. There's only 3 turrets available: a fast-firing but low damage turret, a slowing & damage ice beam turret, and a slow firing, heavy-damage cannon. There's almost no strategy to placing them. In fact, none of the 4 environments or enemies really matter in what you place down. You almost always want to place down the slowing frost turret. Then the fast turret .... then the cannon if you can afford it. In the meantime, you want to place bombs in the back. Then go first person mode whenever you can and just tap the enemies with your melee weapon and they will instantly die. Then go ranged when that's not available and just mindlessly fire at the enemies as much as possible. Rinse & repeat. None of the combat is exciting because all the enemies just walk towards the portal with no strategy. There's just more of them as you get to the 10th and final wave. Some have bigger health bars than others. There is no enemy AI whatsoever. Thus, the actual gameplay is dull throughout. There is also no story. So with no story & dull gameplay, there's nothing to do but admire the visuals. Which only really look great in God mode. Unlocking Master mode (first four levels are apprentice mode) does nothing to improve gameplay. And the game crashes ... a lot. During my almost 2 hours of gameplay, I would say the game crashed maybe 5 times. Rate 3/10. I'm do disappointed. I have no idea how anyone rated this game positively. Don't trust those reviewers.
Here is my first time gameplay video: https://youtu.be/TEh1J2--RoE There are a lot of tower defense games out there but what I like about this one the most is the ability to jump into first person mode to beat the crap out of the enemy with either melee and ranged weapons! There are 4 total maps to play (that im aware of); each map has its own unique set of weapons you can use too which adds some variety to the game. I did find myself wanting to upgrade my towers on multiple occasions but sadly this is not a feature thats in the game which I hope is something they might add later on. Multiplayer support would be great too! Overall at its current price I'd recommend checking it out if you are a fan of tower defense.
