you can hate "Euro Shmups" as much as you want , and yes , this has many Skyforce Vibes , but I have much fun with this !
A review copy was provided by the developer.
🔶 AIRANBLADE is a nice shmup, close to others classic one, with nice gameplay, short campaign on 5 stages. 🔶 Overall good graphics, remind me raiden and Sky force graphics design https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3437059922 Gameplay is good, but also really hard, one hit = you die, not many lives even in easy (5 lives max, only continue from beginning of the stage and each stage are +10 minutes long), not for everyone. 3 types of weapons to choose with different pattern (a red, green and blue one) https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3437059392 Boss fight are pretty hard, because of long health bar, and need to restart from beginning of the stage in case of death (need 3 try to complete first stage on my side) https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3437059677 On my part, game was too hard for me and quit the game on final boss of stage 3. Game is pretty short, a run will take around 1 hour – 1.5 hours, 3 difficulty mode, and last if you can complete it (only 10 % of the player have complete the game on easy) Overall, AIRANBLADE is a nice shmup, with nice gameplay, but pretty short and pretty hard even on easy, not for everyone. 💚💚💚 : - Good gameplay, 3 types of weapons - Pretty challenging game with nice semi-boss & boss pattern. ❌❌❌ : - Really hard, even on easy, no many lives, continue get you back from beginning of a level. - No save, and no practice mode on unlocked stages. The cool aesthetics of the game caught my interest. Although I right out of the gate had the suspicion that it could be a Euro Shmup. Which to me wouldn´t be a deal breaker. After the first time playing the impression stuck with me. Technically everything was implemented well, no issues, so I stuck with the game. After playing a couple of hours and reading about the developer I can say that the reference to Raiden is clearly visible. I really enjoy the overall vibe of the game. Pros: - Obviously the visuals are amazing The bullts are clearly visible and have great colour, the backrounds look fantastic and futuristic, enemy design is exciting, especially the bosses. - The sound fits the graphics and gameplay, I like the atmosphaeric techno songs. There are some bangers. Especially level 2 - 4. Sound effects are good as well. - The gameplay. It´s great to have a fun to play non-danmaku Shmup. Everything is responsive, the weapons are strong (my favourite is the red cannon) and if you lose an extend, it´s to 99% your fault. - The bullet time is well done and can be used offensively to dish out some extra damage to the bigger enemies as well as defensively to manouver through tight bullet patterns. - The intro is sweet and short. So is the tutorial. Bravo! Cons: - Missing of any leaderboards, local and global. A local leaderboard would´ve done the deal for me, as I like to hunt my personal highscore. The game remembers your Highscore for every difficulty at the caravan mode, but not for the normal game. I hope a leaderboard will be added to the game. That would be great. - Ship speed is to slow. At least 1 faster speed level should´ve been considered. Or just do the fastest speed a notch or two faster. - When in game by pressing Start, I can´t restart the game, I can only continue or quit, which means I have to navigate through the main menu again. That is propably my biggest complaint. Accessability is everything in genres like shmups. - It´s a bit irritating at first, when the ship blinks when you collect an upgrade. I thought I lost an extend. Conclusion: It´s impressive that one person did the game and for about 12€ it is a outstanding title and a must have for shmup fans with only minor weaknesses. What the game does it does very good and the love, heart and dedication which went into this game absolutely shine through. In my opinion a true loveletter to oldschool shmups. Absolutely recommended!
Very enjoyable old school style shmup with a bit of a modern flavor to it. I love how dense yet fair is all the action thrown at the player, mechanics and score system are very intuitive and compelling to engage. Mind you that this is not a vertizontal game despite what you see in the trailer (there are invisible walls on widescreen display, gameplay is 4:3 but there's also a TATE mode with it's own distinct dynamic changes in gameplay, neat stuff imo). Also, no euroshmup questionable designs here. I think this is pretty impressive for a solo developed game. I hope more people give it a go, would love to see more content in the future like extra ships or bonus modes (even tho it already included a Caravan mode). Great stuff, recommended 👍
Positive: Cool game. Not so difficult for a shmup, which is a positive for me. This is not a Euro Shmup. Bullets stand out nicely against the background and the sound is quite good. There is a good chunky sound and feedback when you destroy enemies. Music is pretty good too. The game looks beautiful and has art like Skyforce. Negative: There is no button config in the pause menu, so I wasn't not sure which button does what. And the buttons in the config are labeled as 0,1,2,3 etc instead of x,y,a,b. It took me awhile to realize that I can change my speed with RB and LB since that wasn't in the tutorial either. The UI is non-standard: not clear how many lives and continues I have, and the boss HP is not a standard bar, but a number in the bottom right. The game is unplayable with a vertical monitor since some of the screen gets cut off on the right and left sides. There is no practice stage select mode. Bugs: After the first boss your # of lives disappears so you need to mentally keep track of it for the rest of the game. Randomly the top UI which shows your ship speed also appears and disappears.
....... \_☠_ ▄▂_ .........[█|||███████]▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▃▂ ..__▂▅█ Mafia do Retrogame █▅▄▃▂ I████████████████████████████] ...◥⊙▲⊙▲⊙▲⊙▲⊙▲⊙▲⊙▲⊙▲⊙▲◤ MAFIA DO RETROGAME - YOUTUBE @mafiadoretrogame https://www.youtube.com/@mafiadoretrogame MAFIA DA GAMEPLAY https://www.youtube.com/@mafiadagameplay
As a casual player that has played many old-school shoot'em ups like Raiden and Tyrian (my favorite btw), i think AIRANBLADE masterfully combines classic arcade charm with modern innovations. The stunning graphics and vibrant particle effects bring the game's intense battles to life, while the electrifying 80's synthwave soundtrack keeps the adrenaline pumping. The controls are impeccably responsive, delivering fluid and dynamic gameplay that's both accessible for newcomers and rewarding for shmup veterans. I found the optional slow-motion powerup very useful due to the tons of projectiles that fly all around the screen at times, but once I found out that there is an achievement to beat the game without using this power up, I was very tempted to play it again in order to get it. A standout feature is its TATE mode, catering to vertical play enthusiasts, further enhancing the retro feel. Impressively, this gem was crafted entirely by a single developer, showcasing remarkable attention to detail and a deep passion for the genre. I definitely recommend it for both casual and hardcore fans of the genre!
If you're a fan of classic shoot-'em-ups, Airanblade delivers exactly what you'd hope for: intense bullet-dodging, vibrant visuals, and addictive arcade action. The gameplay feels tight and responsive, which is crucial for a shmup of this caliber. The weapon upgrades are satisfying to collect, and enemy patterns keep you on your toes without being unfair. Visually, Airanblade has nice 90's aesthetic graphics with modern polish. The explosions are flashy, the sprites are detailed, and the overall atmosphere is a wonderful callback to '90s arcade shooters. I also think the music is very Amiga-esque, so it's another highlight for the retro fans. While the game doesn't reinvent the wheel, it doesn't need to. Airanblade embraces its arcade roots and executes them brilliantly. If you're craving a straightforward, polished shmup experience, this one deserves a spot in your library. If you're a hardcore shmup fan, you may find it a little bit easy, but the game was designed this way. According to the author (I had a chance to interview him), he's not a bullet hell fan and never expected to make the game as hard as a Cave or Psykio shmup. I believe it's going to please the casual / beginner shmup fan, and may have a nice experience for trained pilots, but the challenge level may be a little bit disappointing for the experienced crew. Anyway, I had a blast! It also features a Caravan mode and lots of extras, so I would give it a go.
Airablade is an excellent Shoot 'em up, with beautiful graphics and particle effects! And no! It's definitely not a Euro Shoot 'em up! It's impressive to see that this game was made entirely by one developer, it's extremely responsive, dynamic and fun, reviving the style already so acclaimed in the past, harmonizing perfectly with current technology, the game is available in different screen formats like the TATE mode, the music is really cool with a very 80's synthwave, anyway, I totally recommend it!
ENGLISH Airanblade offers stunning graphics and an electrifying soundtrack that complement each other perfectly. The controls are incredibly responsive, making the gameplay fluid and satisfying. The difficulty curve is well balanced, ensuring that the game is accessible to beginners, but also challenging enough for more experienced players. The attention to detail and passion of the developer (yes, Airanblade was entirely made by a single person) are evident in every aspect of the game. And two VERY important notes: Airanblade is NOT an Euroshmup, and it is also NOT a "vertizontal" shmup. In short, Airanblade is a must-play shmup, a love letter to the classics of the genre, but with modern innovations that elevate the gameplay experience. If you are a fan of shmups, you can't miss this fantastic title.
