About
Ages of Cataria is a cozy story generation game. Every story begins with a family embarking and then settling on a new land called "Cataria". Here, the villagers will have to build out their comforts and find their roles in this new society.
Over time, others will join your settlement, and some will find love and start new families around town. Experience these generational stories as your villagers age over time.

Villagers will age before your eyes. In their lifetimes, they will leave a lasting mark on the village by forming meaningful relationships, experiencing life-changing events, and contributing their unique skills. See their children grow and leave their own unique mark on the town.
Build out your town, fulfilling your town’s needs for shelter, food, and resources. As your town grows, so will its desires. Decorate your town to enhance its appearance, and villagers may start to take notice as well.

Every so often, villagers will encounter events around the village. These will pop up around the map and happen randomly, giving the villager a chance to experience a unique event. These events can be as small as finding a unique insect and as impactful as marriage.
Death is part of telling a generational story. Everyone’s story eventually ends, and in Cataria, that is no different. Once a villager passes, their spirit will enter your town's spirit tree, which will grow with your town as more spirits pass away. This provides your villagers with a place to gather, remember their ancestors, and offer gifts to the afterlife.

I can't recommend this yet in good conscience. I backed this on Kickstarter about 3 years ago and I don't honestly see where all the development time went to. It's cool as a proof of concept - villagers do indeed age and there are event popups - but the game is full of placeholders and unimplemented content and right now it just feels barren and empty. I played the demo and was incredibly underwhelmed. I was hoping they'd added more for the EA release but I discovered immediately how buggy the game is. Something that wasn't present in the demo version is that the UI for farms seems to be completely broken. During the tutorial, I accidentally placed a second farm without meaning to. I clicked on it and can neither move or delete my second farm. I clicked on the first farm - the one I meant to build - and its UI is broken as the game thinks it's a prop instead of a building I can assign workers to and for some reason takes the UI of whatever building I had clicked on last, such as the Quarry. I didn't make it long but honestly I'm just waiting for some early hotfixes before I dive in again. I recommend waiting before trying it yourself unless you'd like to pay to be a bug tester.
About the Game: The game is incomplete (hello, early access) but playable and enjoyable. You may want to consider waiting until more work has been done to feel as though you are getting your "moneys worth." However, if you like the concept and believe in the project, then right now is the perfect time to get the game and be able to participate in it's growth. I have enjoyed my time so far and I am looking forward to playing along with the hotfixes and updates. About the Team: The devs have been very receptive to feedback and ideas on their discord channel, and they've already released several hotfixes based on that feedback (the game has only been available for 4 days!). From what I've seen from the team over the years and upon this early release, I have complete faith that they will see this game through to the end. I backed this game on Kickstarter and followed the team when they used to stream regularly. The people behind the game are a sweet and fun bunch of people. Addressing the Elephant in the Room: This is their first game and it is apparent that the small team underestimated the time and funding it would take to complete their project - they received a lot of negative criticism over this. As I understand it, they have needed to work "normal people" jobs to pay for the cost of existing, and the team has worked on Ages of Cataria in their spare time, unpaid. Personally, this sounds like a ton of work and I applaud them for keeping up with the progress despite those pitfalls and misjudgments. As an individual who has never attempted to create a video game myself, I find it to be more productive to give them some grace. I am glad to have backed their Kickstarter!
Cataria is SO cute! Highly suggest this as your next cozy game. There is classic resource gathering, petting cute animals, amazing art, and a unique twist to the city building genre. You watch your villagers work, fall in love, have children, age, and even pass on into a beautiful spirit tree?! I'm so excited for future updates. The developers have been working hard to fix bugs and overall user experience. It has its glitchy moments, but the fact they are so quick to fix it, I know this game is only getting better. **edit** Clearly people don't understand what the purpose of Early Access is. It's meant to locate user issues and bugs. That doesn't make it a bad game. Palia in its early stages of release was GLITCHY, and now it's one of the top cozy games. Games require a grace period between early access and final release.
The cozy vibes are immaculate. The game is definitely early but has a lot of potential I'm excited to see where it will go over the next year. Pros Art style Music Aging villagers Good stories Cons Bugs stop the experience UI Missing some content but they plan on adding more
Honestly the game has a lot of potential (the characters and the setting are super cute!), but it misses too much content to be playable now. There is resource management, but no tracking tool (you can't see who is working where or if there is a job without a worker without manually checking it). There is also no option to zoom on a villager, you have to manually look through the map for them. The life expectancy is also quite short (so far, all my couples have become elders before having children), so new arrivals are the only way to keep the town going. I do think this is too early access to be fun for more than an hour or two, but it shows a lot of promise and I am honestly excited to see the future updates.
Waited THREE years for this after backing it on Kickstarter for $25. Paid an extra $30 for extras that I never received. Then I see that the game now sells for $19.99 full price. Seriously? I have been waiting to put y'all on blast for a while. When the game finally releases, with very little word from the "dev" team, the game is a broken mess. No wonder you couldn't find a publisher. No one in their right mind would touch this game with a ten foot pole. Word to the wise, never back a video game on Kickstarter. Edit: Like the previous reviewer that got the jester award from the devs so have I also gotten two. Yall really are something. Can't take any real criticism because you two are the real clowns. Grow up. Your game is trash and you know it.
Cataria is a game that has everything you'd want in a cute, cozy sim game. Gathering, animals, relationships, town building, etc. But let's not forget that it's in early access, so understand there will be bugs. The more feedback we can give the devs, the better they can improve it over time. Thankfully, they've been responsive to comments and put hotfixes and updates out pretty quickly. The biggest bug for me right now is that it won't let me save manually, only autosave. Other than that, I think it has great potential. I love simulation games, so I'm happy to add this to my list
Been playing it for a little while and I tried the Demo and I think this game has a lot of great potential and I can't wait to see how it grows over time! There's so much attention to detail with a lot of things in the world and it has a really cozy vibe all-around. There are some bugs but the devs seem to be putting out a couple of fixes already so I feel like they're on top of things. Looking forward to watching this game grow!
While a touch buggy, this game's definitely got potential.
Ages of Cataria is a village sim game where you get to interact with the villagers on a more intimate level than many of the other civ builder games I've played. The lighting, the animations, and the lovely choose your own adventure, text based quests have been some of my favorite parts. This game is a work in progress. As I've run into a few bugs at this point. But I can see the devs have already given some fixes. Though not yet perfect , it is charming and def worth a play. Try it out for yourself!
