If you enjoy idle games where progress is defined by waiting and decisions carry little weight, this might appeal to you. However, for those seeking a true strategy or management game where choices matter, I recommend looking elsewhere. Spiritstead is clearly designed as a mobile idle game, complete with the hallmarks of heavy microtransactions. While the desktop version fortunately removes the need for payments, the core design remains rooted in mobile mechanics. Labeling this a "city builder" is a bold claim. The city-building aspects are shallow, often limited to replacing buildings without any meaningful strategic consequences regarding placement. The sole exception is the positioning of outhouses, which workers must walk to (unless you choose to drag them there manually). However, the most frustrating element is the resource management. The game introduces various currencies like crystals and moons, which create significant production bottlenecks and halt progress. The only potentially interesting mechanic involves searching for various spirits. Each spirit has a unique look—for instance, dropping a man from the sky might create an "angel" spirit—but even this isn't enough to save the experience. You can easily pay for a guide to find them since they spawn randomly, which further diminishes the sense of discovery. While it starts as a cozy experience, after the first hour, the gameplay devolves into just waiting for things to happen, making it not fun at all.
Spiritstead
When I'm honest, I bought this game because of the art style and it's simplistic but satisfying idle-esque city builder gameplayloop that made me want more after finishing it after about six hours. Spiritstead is a cozy city builder that has some mechanics that idle games have which only affects you for the first half an hour or so. The story is straight forward and isn't a big priority in the game itself - a big priority are the spirits which you unlock by doing specific things, like throwing a sheep into the sky. You build production buildings and builings that increase your overall capacity of villagers that roam around, work and need to run to the next toilet once in a while. The progression feels alright and I felt stuck for a bit because I wasn't aware that you seemingly can only have one spirit of each kind and it took me a minute to figure out how to play around that, but as soon as it clicked, I had a blast. There's a book which gives you hints what you need to do to make certain spirits appear and usually the basic hints are enough to figure it out, also, there are three different mini-games that are fun. I wish there was a bit more after you reach the end of the game - maybe new regions that are only unlockable after reaching certain milestones towards the end of the game, but I also understand that it's supposed to be a short and cozy game but maybe, if there's ever a Spiritstead 2 or content updates in general, I would revisit it instantly or put a potential second game on my wishlist. Like I mentioned before, the art-style is really what caught my eye and I don't regret spending money on it. I enjoyed my time with the game and might as well try to 100% it. If you're into adorable city builders with a cozy and unique vibe, I would recommend this game to you - just be aware that it's a short-ish game. The pros: Very adorable game, I usually am not a fan of top view, city builders. However, this one is quite special and very fun, a lot of eye candy. Music has cozy vibes and I got sucked into playing it for quite some time. As soon as I expanded my area I had to continue to re-adjust my houses, farms, fences, etc. And this is not a negative, its a plus point because it keeps you busy and keeps you active as you expand instead of getting stuck in one area that eventually gets to messy to organize. The cons: I wish I can delete something I've added to the map, I think there may be a button for it, I have no idea. I kinda hated baby sitting the villagers sometimes thank goodness it's not many times, like if they're injured, can you please walk yourself to the hospital you stupid NPC?! I think laying down road paths should give them an upgrade to take care of themselves. When placing a pathway and trying to connect 4 corners, it leaves a hole instead of making a solid 4 line path. I kinda hate how it looks lol. Overall fun, cozy game and will continue playing!
I want to give this a thumbs up so bad, because aesthetically the game is adorable, and for a relaxing city builder the mechanics are on point. However, I lost my first run due to a game-breaking bug where there was supposed to be a sick villager when there wasn't. Clicking on the warning sign resulted in none of the characters getting centered, and going through them maually also revealed none of them to be sick in any way. In addition, whenever I try to move a character around I flew to the edges of the map with no hope of ever getting my settlement back in sight. My own frustrations plus other people's experience that the game can be beaten in under three hours makes it just not worth the price for me.
The demo was great, I finished it a 100%. I think the devs should re-release the demo for new players to try, but make it 50% shorter.
This is a very cute city building game
