Age of Enigma is a decent casual collection of diverse minigames/puzzles connected by a linear ghost story. It took me ~3 hours. The game resolution is fixed at 1024x768 (fullscreen or windowed). There are "casual" and "adventure" modes, I played the latter and still found it fairly casual. The game's decent, the art is decent, the sounds are decent, the voiceovers, hmm, the shadow guy may be a little below par. I couldn't find anything outstanding about this game, either positively or negatively. It is no hidden object game, but in many respects similar to one. It's ok if you like that sort of thing and can pick it up cheaply (I got it in a bundle), but otherwise, I wouldn't recommend it. If you're looking for a casual puzzle game with excellent art and writing, check out Puzzle Agent instead - it's better, cheaper, and funnier (and also a little mysterious and scary). If you want to be truly amazed by a casual puzzle game, get The Room.

[th]Byte-sized review[/th] [th]Losing spirit[/th]

Review in under a minute Age of Enigma: The Secret of the Sixth Ghost is about as rudimentary as a point and click adventure game can get. With unspiring artwork, a hodgepodge of ghost stories cobbled together that don't really mesh well to make a cohesive story-telling experience. The game promises a captivating and spellbinding story but each ghost and their dismal tale seems like they were plucked from better source material and the secret of the sixth ghost is no secret at all if you have half a brain cell inside your head because you certainly don't have to be a Sherlock Holmes / Hercule Pirot to see where this is all headed. Puzzles are tedious, thank god you can just skip all of them, and for some reason the game's resolution is locked to 1024x768. Back in the nineties when these sort of games were all in vogue, Age of Enigma: The Secret of the Sixth Ghost would still have been considered a weak effort.

One word or phrase to sum up the experience Boring and unimaginative to the point of being sleep inducing

Performance/Bug related incidents None

Similar to games Midnight Mysteries; Nancy Drew: Legend of the Crystal Skull; Mystery Case Files: The Malgrave Incident

Suitable for Point and click / adventure game enthusiasts

Score ★★★☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

Rating https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=869455135
Odd little hidden object game, though it is not hidden object in the traditional sense in having a list of names of objects for which to find. Rather, there are items that need to be constructed at various times, such as finding the six pieces of a spear to give to a ghost. It is almost a point & click game, but while there is definitely pointing and clicking, it is more along the lines of what you typically see in hidden object games that have additional puzzles. For instance, there you might be asked to match pieces of fresco to where they fit in the scene, or count the number of cubes in a set of blocks. You do have to collect objects and assemble them, but unlike most point & click games, you are pretty much told exactly what to do, and there is little doubt most of the time as to what to do next. If you have any doubt, you can go to your handy guide which has a list of current tasks, in case you are totally brain dead, and you can click a question in which the answer will show that pretty much explicitly tells you exactly what is needed to be done to complete the task. It's unusual to see what amounts to a hint guide (to this extent) built into a game, but this game seems to be designed for a ten year old who might get confused at times. While the artwork is hand drawn, it is not animated as one might normally expect, but rather you might see a dog running as being indicated as five individual drawings of the dog shown one after the other superimposed on top of the scene. Or another example is when the screen shakes a little to indicate an earthquake. This lack of animation hinders the game at times, since it can be quite distracting. This game reminded me a little of the hidden object game Mirror Mysteries http://store.steampowered.com/app/291630/ but unlike that game which I felt compelled to finish to the end, I started to find this game quite tedious after finishing with the first ghost given that it holds your hand the whole way and the puzzles and hidden objects (such as they are) present little challenge. So is this game worth $10? Definitely not. Is it worth perhaps a buck or as part of a bundle (which is how I got it)? Only if you have a kid who has never played this kind of game before and needs a helping hand.
Age of Enigma is a game I received as part of a bundle and instead of tossing the key I added it due to its intriguing title and description as an adventure game. Ashley Reeves is a medium and as her burgeoning powers slowly manifest she is drawn to a strange mansion and its ghostly denizens to assist them in reaching the afterlife and not remain haunting the living.
Gameplay
As a point and click adventure game, Age of Enigma boasts fairly simple mechanics. The mouse is the primary input and you are required to search the room clicking on suspicious objects to interact with them or pick them up. The appropriate reaction is done instantaneously, and there is no option to look at or interact with the objects. Age of Enigma is refreshing in that it is quite logical in its use of objects, the only trick is to make sure you have acquired all objects in an area to prevent backtracking through multiple rooms. Movement is conducted by simply clicking at the side of the screen when the cursor changes to footsteps. Reversing can be a pain if you have the HUD up, but for the most part the movement is easy to conduct. There are 7 passages of a book to collect throughout the duration of the game, as well as puzzles that need to be mastered to progress. A skip button is provided if they are found to be too difficult. However if you are familiar with basic logic puzzles most of the game is a breeze. Some puzzles are set and have a distinct answer, and there is no penalty for answering incorrectly however some puzzles are randomized and can offer a challenge if you don’t know the procedure to solve them. Most of these puzzles are classic textbook though so should be fairly simple to work out. The game auto saves your progress and there is no ability to manually save. It’s not really a problem, as you can’t exactly miss anything but I was a little frustrated as some puzzles I would have liked to do again.
Narrative
Age of Enigma’s story is mundane at best and camp at worst. It felt very much like a B movie in some of its presentation. Characters range from Aztec warriors to Egyptian pharaohs, and all manner of subsidiary ghosts in between. They’re not bad… just stereotypical. Rachel herself clearly jumps in power rapidly as the game goes on and at times it seems her newfound abilities are very much a deus ex machina. Just as the game shouldn’t prove much challenge for the player, so the problems are similarly easy for Rachel to overcome. The story unfolds much as you would expect and there are no real surprises, as each ghost resolves their personal tragedy, and even the final mysterious sixth ghost is not quite as mysterious, since the games foreshadowing is fairly blatant. For all that the story is mildly enjoyable.
Graphics
Where Age of Enigma does excel is in its art. The character designs are somewhat simple but nevertheless effective. Animations are only done in select areas but where they are present they add believability and life. The backgrounds range from somewhat boring to exceptionally beautiful and have a lovely painterly feel to them which enhances the careful line art of the sprites so that they stand clearly visibly from the background.
Music and Sound
The game has a pleasant soundtrack that varies with the locations you find yourself in. From gentle orchestral pieces in Japan, to drums in South America and rock in hell, its cleverly done and care has been taken to determine the appropriacy of the soundtrack. There is voiceacting and it suffers from the same, lack of inflection and emotion that often besets the genre. It's sometimes hard to really get a feeling for the characters reactions, and in some ways I felt the voice acting was actually a disservice to the overall delivery of the game.
Overall
This is one of those games that sits on the borderline of yes/no. It’s actually a fairly good game, but not really memorable enough or innovative enough to give it a complete recommendation. Hence I’m going to give it a not recommended on the basis that it was too easy, which detracted from the longevity and the beautiful graphics and campy narrative were not quite redeeming enough to compensate for the lacklustre gameplay. Recommended to: People who enjoy supernatural/urban fantasy Not recommended to: People who want some depth or challenge in their games.
Ein schönes Wimmelbild-Adventure mit etwas wirrer Story aber interessanten Rätsel darunter auch mit Klängen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfSPvxMbZEo
Short version: 68%
Age of Enigma is a collection of simple puzzles of little variety, put into an equally repetitive storyline about six ghosts and their incredibly short tales.
Long version:
Age of Enigma: The Secret of the Sixth Ghost is a mostly forgotten smartphone game of a mostly forgotten French independent studio. Like most of its kind, it is extremely short and overpriced. The game mechanics are similar to a hidden object game, only there are no hidden object scenes: you just gather obviously placed items from the rooms then use them to access very simple, childish puzzles, which quickly start repeating themselves, especially in the fifth chapter. The story is about a young woman who is lured into a mansion (what else?) to help six ghosts. All six stages consist of a quick one-room segment where you gain the trust of the ghosts, then a 3-4 screen part where you solve their riddle. It is very straightforward, very simple, but mostly nothing but an excuse to draw some pretty backgrounds.
6.2/10 - Middle of the Road Point and Click This took me 3.6 hours to finish. Not bad for a game such as this. I'd say the story was the worst part. Freeing 6 ghosts.. blah blah. Voice acting isn't bad, puzzles are diverse and sometimes hard. Cut-scenes and graphics are a touch above average. Worth $2-3 - Not $10

Accidently Reviewed
Was this review helpful or maybe even not helpful? Either way join this group for more. Free Keys and Reviews weekly!
