Expect The Unexpected – roguelike. All of the classes are locked, except fighter, and have to be unlocked during play. That annoys me, and was the first indication I got that I probably wouldnt like this game, but from there it got worse. The map is static, rather than randomly generated, which means that this game has no business calling itself a rogue-like. The combat is extremely repetitive, and gets boring after the first hour. Your weapons and equipment degrade shockingly fast (as in, some of these items will break after two fights; fast). You will spend most of your money maintaining your gear if you aren't lucky enough to get the right drops regularly. The game is riddled with spelling and grammar errors... "You remember your uncle advice", "Hail Stranger, I mean you no arm", "The enemy did not saw you, yet". There are numerous little annoyances with the user-interface, like the way that you have to take your equipment off in order to repair it, or how the inventory is bound to 'tab' instead of 'I' (which is bound to skills, instead). There is no proper fullscreen support, without visual tracing. Many skills are colored so similarly when locked (grey-scale) and unlocked (color) that I couldn't tell for sure which skills I had purchased by level 15, without clicking on them. Also, even though all the reviews I read for this said "ZOMG, TEH GAYM ARE SO HARDS!" I strolled through the first two runes to level 15 without having to restart, on normal difficult, on my first run. When you die you solve arithmetic problems to come back from the dead, so if you've completed at least second grade, you should have infinite lives at your disposal.
This is a surprisingly fun game for people who like RPGs, roguelike, and tactical games. The combat is solid for a game of this type. I really enjoyed exploring and seeing different events, much in the way you come across interesting events when doing escort missions in Fallout 1. I'm an FTL junkie and this game satisfied that urge as well. Edit: Issue resolved, thank you! I'm now over the 40 hour mark and playing the last class, the wizard, and having a lot of fun with it. The classes are different enough that it's interesting to play through again and see the new abilities. I can't wait to see what happens next after you
keep the runes!
I really enjoyed this game overall and love that it seems to be updated pretty often.
Tactical turned based game of simply moving around the map, triggering random/repeating encounters, and ultimately towards the various Rune location and clearing it, be it eliminating foes or simply there to drop three weapons. A Grind for Experience and loot to level one's class magic and inept skills. What used to be locked classes except fighter, are now revealed to all from start. During my first playthrough with Hard mode, the Archer class seemingly is the easiest of the all classes with it extensive range and escape skill. One NPC may be recruited from the town tavern, but controls of using F1 or leftclicking on team NPC during encounters is clunky and so very often pose a headache. Spend most time wandering from tree to tree hoping an apple pops up in the beginning is weary. Once clearing all rune locations and delivering to a location near the starting point, the game ends. Unexpectedly, the game itself is rather short for each playthrough if one knows how to play smartly. Considerably dull after seeing each encounters repeating while grinding. Tedious of repeating each classes just to clear some achievements, and 1000 travels.... Looking at all the reviews, majority are 'great reviews' with mere minutes to hours. Playable, But isn't really that great nor worth the time. A Neutral Recommendation.
The LINUX version oesn't work. It only displays a grey screen with a custom mouse cursor. Worked at one point, then some change to the unity game engine version caused problems. There was no fix years, which is not a good reflection on the developer. That said, I tried it again with Steam's Proton compatibility software, and yet it was entirely disappointing, like something from the indie gala website.
This game need a lot of work, but it is a promising game, at the momment the best any one can do is try to head into town without dying a horrible death on your very first step. The death mini game is pretty pointless as i see no way to even guess the right answer to the riddle in time. Many events await you, and most of them will be negative ones but the combat is nice, and it does seem like they plan to make the game more balanced. The story is pretty weak from what i saw as i spawned, you are just thrown into it, go and get the 12 runes blablabla and that is all the information you get as you set out to find the runes. The skills in this game is also nothing special, only a couple of them seems to be good to have.I would not recommend this game but once they have patched the game with their balance fixes it will atleast become more playable for those interested in playing.
It's a one of a kind game. I was looking for this type of game for a long time. Reading all the comments I thought the game was unfinished or something. The gameplay can be improved yes, but has great potencial to be perfected. This game is definitely not for noobs but if you are a roguelike/turnbased rookie you can start playing in easy mode. The story and events make the experience very addictive for roguelike lovers. Go ahead and support this amazing indie game you won't regret it! 5 stars
Expect The Unexpected von GoldenGod Games.
An overlooked little gem of RPG and Rogue-Like which is surprisingly deep for what it is and the price it asks
Update: Video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHxJHkOe5nc Expect the Unexpected is a good little Indie RPG and Rogue-Like game which will keep you going for about 5 hours on normal difficulty to finish a single play through. I didn't know anything about this game until recently and it turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. So what's good about it? Well, first of you have solid RPG elements with skills, abilities, leveling up, better equipment, items and a few choices between factions. The most important thing is that you have 5 character classes, each with their own unique skills and abilities. Leveling up in this game feels great and especially at the beginning where you are working to survive, it will be great and in the end you can get to fighting everything pretty easily-although your equipment degrades and you cannot fight endlessly as it it gets to a point where it gets permanently destroyed so good maintenance is a must. The game is pretty mysterious to start and explore and I liked that. It is a Rogue-Like game in full sense as you have permanent death, only one save file which is a save on exit, permanent item destruction and if you become an enemy of a faction you will pretty much stay an enemy all throughout your play through. However, what I liked about it is that, as in classical RPG fashion, enemies do not get stronger in the same area. You will encounter stronger ones towards the end of the game but the ones that you fight in an area, (although randomly generated in the sense that one of let's say 20 scenarios can happen while exploring an area), have the same power- so you will feel a good RPG progression. The game features terrain advantages which are fun, easy to understand and offer significant bonuses. Hills will increase attacks while forests will increase defense. There is even a golden combination of fighting from a hex with a pine forest on a hill which gives a pretty massive boost. The implementation of the terrain features is the best I have seen in the TBS genre because it is simple, effective and fair. The game tells you to always try to maximize terrain advantages and it is well implemented. Especially in the beginning, this will save your life and it counts more than having good equipment for the most of the game. Another good aspect about it is that it never disappears: it will be useful right up to the end of the game. It is also important to note that fighting in forests make you immune to ranged fire and has all the enemy archers have to come fight you in melee. Covering in a forest is a must to survive when fighting multiple shooting opponents. However, all the classes except the Warrior to start and the Archer and Mage in late game see forests as obstacles for shooting the bow and casting offensive spells and the enemy can encircle you in a forest and they generally coordinate with nearby units to surround you when possible. Forests are thus also great when you have to fight against spell casters since their spells are powerful and you can force them to fight you in melee. Overall, the terrain system works really well. The game has a neat tutorial at the beginning which will tell you all of the necessaries that make it different from other games in the genre and prepare you for your adventure without taking too long or throwing everything at you. Please browse it all in the beginning screen: it only takes a few seconds. I played with an Archer on normal difficulty and the difficulty felt just right and levelling was satisfying so if you don't know where to start go for Archer, level up shooting skills and eventually the ability to get away from the fighting. I advise to start on normal difficulty for a fair challenge. The hard difficulty is quite a bit harder due to tight money and loot in this game. Important features in the game include weapon degradation, repair and restock pricing and faction reputation. Other features include a weather system with perks which I covered in detail down in the guide section. For what it is, the game is surprisingly deep. Every class plays differently, feels very different and has completely different skills and abilities. Some negatives might be that it is not voiced acted or very animated. It is clearly a budget game but worth it for the gameplay, progression and atmosphere. Bottom line: I recommend this game to any RPG fan who wants levelling and character power progression. It is a light RPG experience that you can play for 5 hours with one class on Normal difficulty to finish, in between playing bigger titles. I got this on a Humble Bundle Sale for 2.79 so I am really satisfied with what I got for my money. Please make a sequel. It was fun! :) Update 1: I have now also completed the game as a Warrior character on hard difficulty. It is possible. Also, The achievements in this game can all be done without too much of a hassle. Update 2: A little guide to classes from what I played -The Archer is dependent on range to shoot enemies from a distance. This makes the Archer play through all the way to the end dependent on weather. If you get fog or winds you might only be able to shoot an enemy 2 hexes away. Get the Ultimate Bow however and good weather and you will be shooting everything halfway across the map. The archer will need to avoid obstacles in the beginning in order to take a shot but will later become a master of fighting in forests and eventually be able to teleport out of dangerous situations and take advantage of the best shooting spots on a map. (I finished the game on Normal Difficulty with the Archer). -The Warrior must take advantage of hills and forests from the beginning to the end and always fight in them. This was my easiest play through so far as the Warrior will be able to become a damage sponge early on in the game while equipping a shield and the shield defense ability. Add to this later the fact that he can increase his maximum health, heal when travelling and leach the lifer from kills and with good armor and a good shield, the Warrior can ignore almost all the damage in the game and is the best class suited for preserving equipment. (I finished the game with the Warrior on Hard Difficulty). -The Necromancer is the most versatile class. He can fight in melee or with a bow although not as well as the Archer and Warrior but will heavily support his fighting with offensive spells that also decrease armor, summoning spells and a hypnotize spell. There are incentives to fight in melee with later skills as the Necromancer can absorb Mana from Melee hits if he has enough armor to endure them. However, you can also go ranged with him with a good bow, offensive spells and Skeletons that will fight in Melee and take the fight away from you. ( I played this class on Easy). -The Mage class it probably the easiest to play in the beginning and becomes very powerful with a fireball and later on with an area of fire spell (Doomsday). It's the only class so far except Archer that made me like the big battles with lots of enemies as you can dispatch them quickly. It's probably the easiest class to play after the Warrior. It can be a bit more difficult since you need to watch the health on Mage as the Warrior will just heal when travelling and fighting. It has an advantage over all the other classes though through the fact that it need much less item maintenance since you will mostly shoot spells and have an armor spell. It felt like this one had the fastest progression if specialized on fireball early on and then on Doomsday. ^ If you've enjoyed this review, please consider a donation. I really liked the game, still do not understand how not to notice it among others. Pros: + A huge world with many cities and random locations + Turn-based battle system 5 different classes. + Ability to assemble your team + Reputation system + Not linearity, you can do what you want, and then go on the plot + Huge number of random events + With every new game the world changes Disadvantages: -From a completely free game this game is separated by a map that opens on the plot. I definitely recommend this game
