Age of Empires: Definitive Edition

Date of Review: 13th May 2026 Product Review: 6 / 10 Recommended Retail Price: $10 USD (or lesser) [Definitive Edition, do not get the old school AoE game] Summary: A good entry to RTS games, with economy management, for beginners. The AoE (Age of Empires) franchise has ever been evolving with its famous AoE 2 currently holding a huge player base with expansions rolling out. All due to its predecessor, this! History and story telling are pretty much accurate in its campaign mode and immersive in its missions. However, this might be short lived. This definitive edition has liven up to its name with the graphic upgrade and improved AI patterns from the old game with good QoL updates. However, my RRP can be stingy as with the current demands of RTS games; and its successors, these upgrades does not stand out unless for the sake of nostalgia. Still, get it while it is on sale, and on an attractive one. Pros: 💚 Simple User Interface 💚 Very forgiving gameplay to clear your missions 💚 Achievements are not hard to achieve 💚 Graphics upgrade is done well 💚 Soundtrack sounds great 💚 A GOOOD, but not great yet, scenario editor to create your own scenarios with storytelling. (There might still be a community on this game, hopefully.) Cons: ❌ Controls can be clunky still (Mitigated as this is a remastered version of a 30 year old game, from writing) ❌ Sadly, there are not many missions that requires the Hero to do except for conquest mission ❌ While the graphics and audio upgrades are signficant, there are still room of improvements. If only the soundtracks can be catered to the civilisation that you are playing, (Mitigated as this is a remastered version of a 30 year old game, from writing) ❌ There are still movement and pathfinding issues in the game. Although it has been improved in the definitive edition, this cannot be mitigated as these can be annoying at times during gameplay. Tips/Recommendation for full achievements: 💡If you do it well, there are some unit combinations that can be META in the most difficult ending missions. 💡Towers can be your best friend at times. 💡It is a RTS game with resource management included. Strike a balance with both. 💡On missions that requires transporting over huge water bodies, i would recomment to do the doing in priority: Cripple naval capabilities -> cripple shore capabilities -> Push in. (Destroy/Delete own units when necessary due to population cap. Achieving balance is key.) 💡97.73% of the achievement can be achieved via offline modes (Campaign, Custom games, Scenarios) What has not been experienced: - Online community Have Fun!!!
