I'd hope with over 100 hours in this game I'd have a reasonable and informed opinion on the game. Unfortunately it was only enough to get upto the start of generation 3 before I stopped. That opinion is to avoid this game. I'd heard that in order to get the true or best end of the game I'd need to finish it on hard difficulty within a certain number of turns. That part seemed ok as I played. You can fight and level your characters outside of mandatory battles without increasing the turns. However I quickly ran into another problem. The battles are a GRIND. In theory they sound good, you position your characters to use their skills together to create stronger skills. However every battle once you get 10+ hours in takes a lot longer than you'd like. Indivdual enemies become damage sponges which you'll spend the whole turn just to KO (let alone overkill). When you're facing 4-5 of those enemies plus a boss or 2 you're going to be there a while. Given that battles are slow and time consuming, this also means grinding enemies for items or XP is extremely tedious. Your individual team members only gain XP if they are in your active party. This is more a personal gripe for me. I want the freedom to mix up who I use butwith unused characters quickly falling behind in levels and no catchup mechanic, the game heavily pushes you towards sticking with the same group all the time. The story is unremarkable. In Generation 1 its ok but generation 2 it takes a nosedive quickly with a MC who has the personality of a rock. The party members rarely shine in this regard either. Characters that seem initially promising quickly settle into either being dull or ridiculous. Maybe this is a translation issue but none of them felt very real. Overall I really tried to give this game a chance, pushing through some grinds for items and other things. But in the end it defeated my patience and willingness to keep slogging through what I assume will be more of the same for another 100 hours. Note I didn't use any DLC, I played how I felt the game was designed ot be played throughout.
It's Agarest. Its sad to see it go into microtransactions but not unexpected. Be prepared for the grind, have a walkthrough on hand for each generation to get the items, be prepared to die alot on the first go. It has new game plus so you can revisit those enemies that you want to PWN for giving you trouble. Following several generations of a bloodline was a good idea, but this one fell flat and its better than its sequel imo. 6/10 Nostalgia bait.
I want to like this game. I really, really do. But god is everything about this game tedious. From the fights being slow and grating, to having to grind for literally EVERYTHING. Money, weapons, skills and levels are all things you have to spend HOURS to gain. Even the cheese methods are obnoxious to use. The game is also hard as hell even on normal mode. Meaning you can't skip grinding at all. You HAVE to put in that time to gear up and level if you want to progress in the later half of the game I like the art style and music. especially the music. The story is rather basic for most of the campaign, but if you push through the grind and punishing difficulty there is some rather interesting plot points that occur later on. Would I recommend this game? I would say.... maybe? DO you like hard as hell JRPGS? Do you like grinding all day and even find it therapeutic? Do you have a lot of free time to do said grinding? If all those answers are yes then I'd get it on sale, with the caveat that you don't blame me if you don't like it or quit halfway through. I love the music so so much that if you do get it then you have to buy the collector's edition with the soundtrack. Its fantastic.
Agarest 1 -> Agarest Zero -> Agarest 2 This is the order in what you can transfer saves!!!
tutorial is too hard never landed a hit and all my characters died dont like that arrow is on my screen when using a controller
Had this game for years, tried starting it up half a dozen times and it just never stuck. You pretty much need to be glued to a guide to get a lot of mechanics the game doesn't explain, and to complete the game. It's grindy and combat is just crunchy compared to other turn based JRPGs. Go get the screenshots and skip the gameplay if that's what you're after.
I enjoyed the story and characters. Many of them are charming and grow on you. The girls are all very pretty. I am a person that likes lore and story development so I do like that part of the game. It's like a visual novel with good voice acting although it's all in Japanese. The concept of 5 generations that build on one another is interesting and I enjoyed seeing how your choice of bride influenced the next hero. The battles however can get repetitive and boring fighting on the same maps with the same enemies over...and over...and over. I try to use auto-battle sometimes to just get through it and on with the story, but the auto-battle feature is miserably inefficient and usually gets my characters killed. The exploration points are all very similar, just seemed like the reskinned the same one, and are at times confusing to get through and collect all the items without a guide. Most boss battles are gruelingly hard. I always have to do more preparation and stack more attacks than I think I need to be successful. That being said, I do enjoy the game more than the annoyances. I will play again to try to get the "true ending" and try different team builds. There's a wealth of interesting characters, it's a shame you can only use 6 in a party at a time.
Rating: 2/5 --- What a effen grindfest. I think the sprites are nice, the dialogue is well delivered, but the actual gameplay is a slog. Choosing Waifu Sim is a nice twist on the strat genre, but the monotony grows thin. The inventory system has a lot in it, but without a guide it seems almost impossible to parse what needs to be done to get a book that teaches the recipe for the one item you might need to continue your chain of weapon improvements, but eff if I know. There is enjoyment to the steady power improvement, but the exponential power leaps can be brutal. In the end, with the help of DLC packs, I was able to just use the same characters again and again who had amazing weapons and just rolled the game. I feel bad for those who had to play this game without a guide. That being said, this game is a completionist wetdream. The True End is the ending that is supposed to be achieved and that carrot is an enticing one for those seeking to 100% this game. It means nothing to me. Ellaine is best girl.
I have never seen such a terrible game with many bad designs. Although I purchased some DLCs, but the game still makes me feel very tired. Pros: +Many beautiful girls. +Various skills and equipment. Cons: -The hero only can select one girl as his wife. Then he will sacrifice his soul to seal a pillar. -The design of auto battle system is terrible. Because it wasted so many turns than manual controls. -There are five continents in the game, each one has a lot of map locations. Almost every map location has a battle. So player was forced to finish several hundred of non-escaped battles. -It's very hard to find the way in some exploration points. -The boring game design will be repeated for five generations.
