A difficult game that I've played countless times over the years. A remake could really bring out the potential of this one.
I kind of knew what I was getting into, but it really does have extra-heavy text reading requirements, and I just wasn't prepared. It does have a very extensive set of skills and sub-skills, which is what initially attracted me, but the use of them being entirely text based turned me off. I would have preferred more graphics, even if just pictures.
Thought I might come back to this one day to give it another go, but I just can't. I really wanted to like Academagia. While the concept and world are neat, the UI is pretty bad and absolutely nothing is explained. There's a very steep learning curve and I honestly just don't have the patience to stick with it and do a bunch of playthroughs just to know how to actually play the game.
This game has a steep learning curve and so much text it can be overwhelming, even for someone like myself who usually loves to read every piece of in-game lore. However, nothing beats it in terms of building a complex, lived in world. Whenever I start a game I find myself sucked in for the rest of the day, I only wish there was a sequel.
never finished, only one school year is playable.
As a kid, I had a tradition where I played though this game every winter. My old PC, the one I shared with two sisters, turned into a magical wardrobe, witches and sphinxes included. Though it, I would find this cozy-est book, this world of unending secrets . In Academagia, you were a secretive student learning taboo magics in libraries long buried in dust, a dashing pirate dodging classes and facing beasts, or a socialite noble scion making connections for some future coup... until you had to let your sister have her important Skype meeting with the school friends she just parted with. It's interesting rediscovering Academagia as an adult. Some of the flaws are more obvious, the UI being the glaring one, but the charm is still there if you still have that kid inside, the one that was willing to dream and explore and get lost.
At the time of this review, Academagia continues to be a unique game. For that alone (to experience history), I recommend it buying and playing it. Nonetheless, Academagia is also a *good* game. The world of the Elumia is exquisitely fleshed out within many pieces of lore throughout the game as well as the many adventures one can undertake. The character creation process is what drew me in initially circa 2010; I probably spent a few hours just going though the various boons/maluses one can assign to one's character. If you're the kind of person that enjoys reading and imagining the world presented to you within the texts, this game is definitely for you. If you're the kind of person that enjoys figuring out how this incredibly deep life sim works...this game is also for you. Even if you're the kind of person that just wants to play through everything without much reading, you can do that, too! Honestly, I feel like I grew up alongside this game like I did alongside a few influential books (i.e. the Earthsea series by Ursula K. LeGuin) that I've read and reread multiple times throughout my life, each time gleaning new/changing experiences and interpretations. First I tried to minmax characters, got somewhere, then stopped. Some years later, I decided to roleplay my (non-broken) characters' lives as first year mages. I decided to keep a diary for one those characters (and there were also plenty of other players who did the same and even posted their own diaries online). Of course, at some point I gave the game a long break again. Eventually, I started to really read the lore/adventures and wonder about what could be. Really, it's a timeless work of art, in my opinion. Now, it does have its flaws: - There continue to be a few game-breaking bugs. One of the bugs is patchable for tech-savvy folks, though. - The UI was OK for the average screen resolution was 1368x768, but it still doesn't scale well to 1080p/4K. - Some of the skills/systems (i.e. Duel, Rimbal, and crafting) remain half-baked at best. - The Spell/Pheme system is complex, but can be gamed. - Being able to sacrifice a member of a Clique to pass an adventure check is, IMO, not a great mechanic. - Astrology is utterly incomprehensible (like it is IRL, perhaps?). But, overall, those are are just small flaws in what is otherwise an utterly unique experience. Overall (including prior to Academagia appearing on Steam), I've probably spent >800 hours on this game over the last ~15 years. IMO, it continues to be a classic game that I keep coming back to every couple years...and I'm eager for it to become a classic for others, too!
I'm having so much fun. Its like a choose your own adventure with magic !

Great game, lots of bugs, could use some polish, worth playing, idea is fascinating, said it doesn't look like it will ever get a sequel :) (also, it was so long that I said to its creator I already played a sequel ... year does have a lot of days, doesn't it?)
