Short answer: It's a pity. The presentation is very nice (albeit the text is tiny and so are some buttons) and the writing is fine, and it seems very alluring to magical academy fans (Potterheads and otherwise), but it has one critical flaw. NOTHING is explained. You have no idea what you are doing. There is somewhat of a short manual in the form of a letter right at the beginning that gives you a brief rundown of what to expect, but it barely touches any mechanics at all. You raise random stats, explore the school grounds and discover random new places, lean Phemes (keywords that look like they are concepts needed for spells?) and set your schedule, but there is never a clear goal to work towards. You can't even befriend people without raising the necessary skill to even get the "befriend" action, and getting there takes several days of doing nothing else at all. Not that the game tells you this, nooo. You get various events that give you several options how to deal with them. These are color coded to tell you their rough probabilities of succeeding, but those are never explained either (read about them in the wiki) and you never know how close or not you came to succeeding. The game rolls dice for you, but you have no idea what is actually happening, mechanics-wise. You supposedly can find items and use them to unlock actions or bonuses (like reading a book to get a new action that is taught in it), but sometimes the item does not show up in the "use item" list even after identifying it. Raising skills is a chore, you need to raise three different sub-skills for each of your six main skills, and each step takes several time slots. You can save schedules to recreate them quicker, but only the actions themselves are saved, not the details that you select from tiny drop down menus. The game shows so much potential, but does everything wrong except the writing and the graphics. Yes, the interface has a nice appealing style, but that's the best one can say about it. Clearly, the makers are VERY creative, but don't know jack about how to make a game people want to play. It hurts me to write this: Not worth the money, not even at a sale. Sorry.
Abandoned series. Don't get your hopes up.
This game has a lot going for it and I've been a fan for years even before it came to Steam, but it's built on .NET framework and if you hover over skills for a tooltip while saving/loading is happening it will corrupt your save. It's a fun COYA, play it if you want just be aware.
Clunky UI, lack of tutorial and pretty hard to get into. Char creation is long and in depth, but I hardly knew what my selections even meant for my character. Felt like you have to do a dummy run and just select whatever until you actually learn how to play, and then start over with a char once you actually understand everything. But the game didn't hold my attention enough to want to do that.
The idea behind the game is really cool - a magic school life sim with lots of customization options and interesting detailed lore. However, the UI made it so confusing to play. The text looks tiny on my laptop (which I got around by using the Windows magnifying glass), and the menus are overcrowded with stats and bits of information. The amount to micromanage from the very beginning feels overwhelming. A particular example is the Calendar, where weekly schedules can be picked for the entire school year right away. I would rather make the picks every in-game week, depending on how the story flows and what feels natural for the character at a given time. Not to mention, the UI glitched out on me at this point and I could not leave the Calendar page to try progressing the story. I wanted to like this game, since I enjoy the magic school setting. But as it is, it's too frustrating to keep playing.
Major known bug has made the game essentially unplayable unless a player is hardcore about never loading old saves and the bug can even affect them if their system crashes before they can save if the specific conditions that make old saves get corrupted are met. This has been known about for years, a fix was even suggested on the official forums a while ago, but no resolution has been had. As much as I love the game, this is just killing it for me. Gonna have to uninstall until they fix it, if they ever do.
I bought this YEEEEEEEEARS ago and I've only just got around to play it. All I can say is: Wow. Wow in the sense that what they have here is something special for anyone that enjoys text-based games where you can control the development of your character as the story unfolds. By going to classes every day, except weekends and holiday, but choosing if you want to skip them or not. Making your own schedule and looking after your stress/vitality to ensure you don't get too overwhelmed or sick to end up wasting a day. Wow in the sense that there is a LOT of lore on this world, from little pieces that your character will learn by going to classes. Lore dumps, quotes, tiny stories from going to different places in the academy that you can see for yourself by going into the "Lore" bracket. Even at some point, you might even use a story you've learnt to help you come out of a blunder you've been mixed up in. Wow in the idea that you actually feel like you're a student barely struggling to get on their feet in a place that is super competitive. Blunder and accidents are bound to happen, and it's up to your in how you plan accordingly for when that happens again. Exams are coming up, are you going to try and have a personal goal of acing a couple of them, or just barely passing to avoid getting a telling off? Wow in the sense that this game hasn't got a sequel. It was a fun-killer for me upon realising the game is essentially at a complete roadblock. Release date for a sequel was back in 2017? It's quite obvious that multiple writers were used to add story elements and random events. One moment you'll meet one character, and their name will be underlined. The next moment, you'll meet one character and every single "he" or "she" will be underlined which can be quite off-putting. I'm not faulting having multiple writers because this kind of game truly does need it, and I didn't really find myself getting bored by the random events since I was curious as to what the thing might occur. If the sequel was just around the corner, I'd happily keep playing. Right now I'm torn and must tell people to avoid getting their hopes up. After the exam phase is over, it kind of just feels like it all slows down. I'm just doing the same scheduling thing over and over again. Maybe I'm missing something, I'm not sure.
A difficult game that I've played countless times over the years. A remake could really bring out the potential of this one.
