About
A Storied Life: Tabitha is a cozy narrative game about memory, legacy, discovery, and joy inspired by elements of Unpacking, A Little to the Left, and classic word game Mad Libs.
An elderly loved one has died, leaving you their estate and a letter encouraging you to sell any valuables. But when a mishap spoils their soon-to-be-published memoirs, you set out to repair the damage, piecing together their hidden past using the items you inherit.
Explore a picturesque country house and pack away its contents, room by room. Move furniture, lift rugs, and open cupboards to uncover hidden and forgotten objects.
What separates cherished items from rubbish? Slowly sift through fragments of someone's past and decide whether to keep, auction, or discard each object.
You can't keep everything. Move and rotate items to fit them into boxes. Limited space and weight considerations mean you must let some things go.
Strengthen boxes with tape and vacuum pack soft goods to fit more in. Don't forget to bubble wrap fragile objects or they may break when unpacking.
Every item you save unlocks a set of associated words. Use these to mend the gaps in the damaged memoirs, completing the sentences to reveal a storied life.
You determine how the past is recorded. Uplifting, silly, shocking, funny, sombre... the memoirs have many potential branches, and every decision is yours.
Authentic Yorkshire setting: An intricately branching story rooted in North Yorkshire, UK
Soothing, painterly world: 17 delicately animated, hand-painted levels, enhanced by ambient weather and time of day effects
Multiple endings: The memoirs you write directly impact the final room's puzzles and how your benefactor is remembered
Item encyclopaedia: Your journal automatically logs all collected items and the words they unlock, and tracks the funds you raise at auction
Adaptive word puzzles: Forget to safely pack your items? Broken and pristine versions of the same object unlock unique words for the memoirs
Secrets and surprises: Uncover unexpected treats by replaying levels and experimenting

Super cute game with LOTS of things to figure out. There are a few things that I feel like are nearly impossible to know without looking up, but none of them keep you from being able to fully enjoy the game. I have already played through six of the endings and I plan on doing the rest, but I have already been telling other people to give it a try. It's JUST the right amount of cozy and puzzle solving.
! possible unspoilery spoilers ! The graphics are beautiful, and I start like that because I'm not actually sure what to say. I did enjoy the game, and the story captivated and fascinated me in more ways than once. The witchy aspect was a nice surprise for me, too, so I'm most excited to explore this storyline (since I only got the ending with the chaotic story that didn't get published so far...). What was also unexpected is the time, to be honest. Don't get me wrong, I didn't mind that finishing the entire game for the first time took me around 6 hours, but I've read it was much shorter. Frankly, I think the fact that it is longer is even better, since I wasn't limited to make decisions quicker than I wanted to by some (nonexistent in the actual game) clock with the time limit. Besides that, the puzzle aspect of the game isn't too difficult, but it's not too easy either. It was quite a challenge for me, especially if the objects I wanted to take were on the bigger side or had less even shape. The daily puzzles are also an interesting idea, nevertheless, I can't fully speak on it since I haven't got all the neccessary tokens for the price (I can't remember what it was...).
Well, I just spent the last few days playing through the game nine different times to see every single "official" version of the story, so I think it's safe to say that I liked it. It's not an especially long game, but that's a good thing, because it's very much designed around replayability. I do think that going in already knowing that it's designed around distinct "themes" tied to sets of items, that when stuck to tell a more intentional story, enhanced my enjoyment early on, instead of having to figure that out only after flailing blindly toward a jumbled mess. Indeed, overall I got much more enjoyment out of the routes that were designed this way than the ones where you're required to mix and match to fill the story out. Basically, think of it more as a puzzle built around figuring out which items in each room go together in sets, rather than truly making your own story from a wide range of options. When it comes to the added complicating mechanics, I felt that the breakability, shrinkability, and foldability added a fun bit of extra challenge and variation, but the weight management was just a needless bother. Thankfully, there's an option to turn that mechanic off which doesn't penalize you for using it, which I did almost immediately and never looked back. Overall, it's a fun little game that's an easy recommend for me, just keep in mind that it's designed more as a guided storytelling experience than a true mad libs, make-your-own-story type of deal.
I want to like this, but it's too clunky in interface and storytelling to really click for me. -Cannot hit Esc and go to the main menu, leading to me finally just closing the game via the taskbar to escape. -Box weight limits seem really low (4 books in one box? Too heavy! Trash them.) -The menu wheel pop-up of "hover and wait to get a menu" is annoyingly slow and bogs the play down. -Cannot auction more than one item, but can't pack much, so you toss a lot of stuff you'd have saved. -The madlibs section is badly explained and I had to look up a guide to figure out that broken hearts were not "wrong" choices, just a story option to take. Plus just the overall "hey this old friend of yours died, go figure out what you can sell on ebay" premise is just exhausting. Even in a video game, I apparently should prioritize a side hustle over genuine human connection. Blegh. Not cozy, imho. Unpacking did it better. So did Spirit of the House.
A very fun game. I really enjoyed mixing and matching items to find different word combinations to unlock new information about Tabitha. One thing I wish I could do is go back and modify my already written stories, rather than restart the whole game over. Other than that, I had a great time with this game!
