About
Hi everyone!
I'm Lloid, a solo developer, and this game was a little passion project I built in my spare time.
You're alone in an abandoned mine, armed with nothing but a pickaxe.
Mine through rocks, uncover rare minerals, sell what you find, and upgrade your gear... if you survive.
The deeper you go, the darker it gets.
Strange things dwell below the surface—and they don't like visitors.
Mine. Progress. Fight. Discover what's buried in the dark.
No timer. No mercy. Just you, your headlamp, and the unknown.

Alright. A Game About Mining Rocks is done and dusted. This game is clearly inspired by A Game About Digging A Hole, but it completely changes up the formula by ditching the shovel in favor of a mining pick, and instead of digging holes to find/sell rocks and such, you are instead breaking up boulders and collecting/selling rocks in an already existing mine. To that end, in addition to your trusty mining pick, you also will unlock a mine cart which will allow for quick traversal back and forth between where you are in the mines and the computers you will return to in order to sell your rocks and buy upgrades. It's a familiar system with some worthwhile tweaks. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3523371068 Now, your mining pick is actually not upgradeable. Instead, you will be upgrading stamina, your backpack (in two ways: how much stone you can carry and how many gems and other more precious materials you can carry), your mining cart's traversal speed, and buffs to the amount of cash you earn from selling all your hard-earned stuff. You will also unlock explosives and X-Ray Goggles. The former only works on boulders. The latter will allow you to see valuables hidden in boulders and such nearby. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3523371125 As you break up boulders, you will find secret areas which hold more valuable materials or a greater number of valuables you already are finding elsewhere; and you will also find keys. Three keys are needed to unlock the next area of the mine, which allows you to travel deeper into the mine and the mysteries it holds. This is a rinse and repeat activity until you reach the final area and the endgame boss fight (which you will already have guessed if you looked at the achievement list). All of those systems work pretty well. Although, you will start to develop carpal tunnel trying to break up every boulder you find, lol. It's a click heavy game. But otherwise, the gameplay is pretty seamless. There are a couple negatives though. For one, all achievements are tied to playing the game no less than two times, and likely as many as four times for a couple of them. You earn no achievements on your first playthrough. Which, I get that the developer would like you to play this more than once, but it's a questionable decision IMO. Some are tied to multiple playthroughs. Some aren't, but they won't drop even if you meet the criteria, during your first playthrough. The second issue I have is more of a personal one. The soundtrack includes a lot of 'jump scare' type sounds. Like, you are mining and all of a sudden you hear something running up on you. Except, there's nothing there. The implication is that the mine is haunted, but it actually isn't. It's funny, but also kind of immersion breaking. I turned the soundtrack volume to zero and the problem was solved, but it's just something I didn't care for, personally. Finally, the flashlight is hit or miss. Sometimes the light seems to get lost in the surroundings, other times, the light is nice and bright. It's very inconsistent. I also have questions. Why are there vases and other random items in the middle of boulders, lol? It's kind of funny, but it really makes no sense. Also, is the whole swimming-Kickstarter thing intended as a joke? Just curious. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3523370920 Anyway, it took two hours to finish the game, and while I had fun, I don't really want to play it again for the sake of earning cheevos. Does the game earn its $4.99 asking price? I think so. It seems like a fair price, especially if you do intend to play through this more than once. And it is a pretty enjoyable and satisfying experience overall. I think it's worth a look. I enjoyed this, especially as this developer's first game. I would've loved pickaxe upgrades, but it's not feasible since the rocks work in chunks. Currently, I'd say the upgrade system isn't massively important, just find the keys and progress ASAP. Overall, it did scratch an itch, and I found time flying by and reaching the end. Also, for those having issues with the minecart in QWERTY. Your chosen control scheme doesn't affect the cart; it's Z to go forward and S to go back. Looking forward to future games!
way way too many bugs for me. the mining cart broke for me as soon as i stepped in to it, flashlight keeps going dark and shades all the time. i would advise to buy once problems are ironed out (these bugs also happened to a you tuber but i thought would have been fixed before release-guess not)
Obviously inspired by A Game About Digging A Hole, A Game About Mining Rocks does enough things different to earn its place as its own game. You have one tool, a pick-axe, and you use it to mine rocks. Inside these rocks, sometimes there are gems or other precious items. Continue deep enough and there is a boss fight, too. Achievements are locked until the game is completed once which is certainly a choice.
Stone, Spider, and Rare achievements are broken. I have them done according to my wall in game but my steam page says no. Give me my achievements and I will change this review
Alot of what I have to say is critical of this game but on the whole I enjoyed myself and just want to share my thoughts so the developer can understand things from the players perspective to make their games better and more enjoyable in the future! I ran into a few bugs while playing but the only one I was really frustrated by was when I couldnt find the third key for the third area even after breaking all of the rocks avalable. My only guess as to what happened is that some of the rocks are clipped into terrain outside of the mineable area so i think one of my keys spawned unreachable perhaps? So I started a second playthrough and was able to find all the keys this time. Since I was feeling pretty frustrated I didnt go out of my way to find collectables like i did the first time. I really just wanted to see what the end of the game was before I stopped playing. *spoilers ahead* Now i have a few problems with the design of this game. Firstly, why do you keep jump scaring me randomly with the sounds that make no sense to be in the area? Footsteps running behind you, a hammer hitting a anvil, rats scurrying around and bats flying around your head. But when you look there is nothing. I think the rats/bats make sense to be in a cave but the others just caused me to feel anxious the whole time I was playing. This is not necessarily bad as an idea but could have been executed better. Maybe as you enter the third area and walk towards the piles of dirt bats could fly around your head before heading deeper into the cave. Something like this makes complete sense in the setting and the jumpscare is also reasonable. But as things are currently I can be anywhere in the mine, enjoying myself breaking some rocks and then I hear someone running around behind me and turn to see what it was. Only to find nothing and feel uncomfortable for a bit. This could just be a skill issue as im easily startled but since this kept happening over and over while playing it got tiresome after a while. A game about digging a hole which this game seems to be inspired by was for the most part a relaxing experience where you grow throughout the game and get better at digging a hole, as you go deeper you find more expensive items to sell to get even better at digging a hole. The upgrades in this game do not make you better at anything, they only allow you to do the same thing for longer. Upgrading your stam/bag sizes only mean you can mine at the exact same pace for a larger amount of time you do not get any upgrades to your pick which can make the act of mining more satisfying you only get to do the same thing for longer, so you miss out on this feeling of progression which a game about digging a hole has. I know as you go you unlock upgrades but they are all single use. The explosive being single use makes total sense but if you give me x ray goggles it makes sense that I should still be able to use them as it doesnt make any sense for them to break after use. Maybe a different way to add scarcity to the goggles would be to give them a battery that drains while it is active as you don't want the player walking around with it constantly active either as this takes away from the ambience of the game. As you would have seen in other reviews you die when you touch any water in the game and lose all resourses, I have no problem with this as I understand this is your first game and it is a mining game you dont ewven need to be able to swim. So when I jumped into the pool at the hub and died i didnt feel frustrated at all. However when I fell in water later in a different spot (skill issue) when I died the message said something to the effect of "support the kickstarter to unlock swimming". I know what you actually meant was support development of this game so I can afford to add swimming but the wording here implies your holding it ransom, that only people who are on the kickstarter can swim which feels sucky and is frustrating to have pop up when I have already paid money to play this game. No I want to praise the last section of the game where you are walking around with a revolver killing bugs and after gathering enough keys you fight a dragon boss to finish the game. I actually enjoyed this section most of all, the spiders had very simple pathing and just dissapear when they die instead of dropping a corpse but it felt satisfying shooting them and I enjoyed the effects from shooting the gun. It was unrealistic for a revolver to never need reloading but again I understand this was a sort of limitation you ran into where you might not have had enough time to add a reloading animation and all that. The boss fight itself was probably my favourite part. The boss had different attacks which require different reactions. The first attack where it throws a fire ball at you is easiest to dodge when far away, when rocks rain down from above you have to balance dealing damage with looking to see where the rocks will fall, the third attack where it breaths fire across the arena is easiest to dodge when you are closer to the dragon. I love the variety and that you need to react differently to each attack. To be honest you could probably tank most attacks as you have so much health but I digress. I think this is a great start and that if the bug where I was unable to find the key for whatever reason is fixed I would have enjoyed this experience alot more. I look forward to seeing what you make in the future and wish you well!
Nice game, i played it completely in 5 hours but sadly i didn't get 3 Achievements :( I recommend it 10 out of 10 ! The Monsters in the last mine shaft was a little bit scary for me xD but i was okay with that
