About

Hi everyone! As of February 2025, I have decided to make this game free to play. You can still purchase the game if you'd like to support me as a developer. This was my first solo-developed game and I learned a lot from the experience. It isn't everything I wanted it to be, but a bunch of people have had fun with the game and thought it was really cute. Feel free to play the demo below and leave a review with what you think! I know the main story is short, but even that short story took about 10 months to develop beginning to end. The building mode can be fun and I'd love to see what you've made (post your screenshots to the Community).

is a Canadian-made game by a solo developer, offering a short, story-driven experience designed to be completed in about 30 minutes. For those seeking extended play and creativity, it features an optional build mode. It's the perfect choice for players looking for a concise and enjoyable experience!

In Story Mode, you play as Buckey the Beaver. You can go swimming in the river, munch down some trees, and build dams with logs. Drama strikes when one of your kits gets stuck on a neighboring island, and you need to build your way across.
Your Goose neighbour, Cecilothy, does not like your beaver kits running all over the place. He’s got a mean streak as long as his beak, so you’d be better off staying out of his feathers.
Despite the bright colors, A Beaver's Tale is a story about loss, grief and parenthood in the wild. Building a home for your young kits is the most important thing now!
After completing the main story, you can access Building Mode. Fully customize the world of Buckey the Beaver; clear a new plot of land, plant new trees, and build anything out of logs!
Building mode only currently works with a mouse and keyboard.

I find myself to be very knowledgeable in the beaver community, i found this game to be spot on. The story was very engaging, and without spoiling anything at one point i was holding back tears. Well done!
How much wood does a beaver's need for his house?! Jeeez... Super cutesy, although would be great if the story was longer.
Chill relaxing game. it could have markers pointing you toward where you need to go but even without that, the game is easily finished in around 15-20 minutes. I do hope there is an update for the Goose jail cause I did trap the goose on 1 side of an island in build mode before 1 of the beaver talked about a jail. Great mind thinks alike. You can't trust those Canadian Goose.
Love the game. It was interesting to see how things played out through the story. Build mode has quite a high object limit, but i was able to crash the game with an auto clicker after 10 minutes. the only thing I would want to see is a way to build dams anywhere if that is possible.
Dude 5 minutes and you win. How can you be upset about that. Now to explore the other play types.
Ellietendo's Review Of A Beaver's Tale
For those reading this review, I did receive a free copy of this game for review purposes. I used Mouse & Keyboard Combo and my Steam Deck for gameplay.
Pros:

Cute Storyline - The storyline of A Beaver's Tale is sweet and is suitable for all ages! Getting to see how the adult Beaver looks after the babies is cute and makes me want to protect them at all costs!
Simple Controls - It was easy to pick up the controls. Pretty straightforward and Willie (The Groundhog Character) acted like a guide, so if I forgot the controls, Willie was able to say, for example, "Press B to cut down the tree", which was very helpful!
Free Game (Kinda) - As of February 2025, the developer decided to make this game free to play. You can still optionally purchase the game to support the developer, but it is voluntary, which is nice.
Steam Deck - This game works surprisingly well on the Steam Deck. I thought to give the game a go on Steam Deck just out of curiosity, and it functions just as well as when I tried the game on PC! Having the option to play on the go is a lovely bonus, and I'm sure the developer will be pleased about this!

Cons:

Very Short - As expected from an indie game, the play-time is very short; it takes about 1 hour to play through the story and perhaps about 3 hours to get all the achievements. This is an indie game from an individual, so I'm not going to be too harsh about this.
Not optimised - Again, as it is an indie game, I wouldn't expect too many optimisation settings. Luckily, this game doesn't use too many resources (for now), so having limited optimisation is fine in the game's current state. However, if the game adds more details and assets in the future, then it could become more problematic.
Tricky Achievements - Some of the game's achievements aren't straightforward to gain. I was lucky to be able to work them out, but some indicators would be very helpful so we know we're going the right way.

Overall:
A cute indie game with plenty of potential. From what I can see, it's in the early stages of development (Please correct me if I'm wrong), so it's hard to fully judge this game as a complete piece. As a proof of concept, it's perfectly fine. There are a few errors/challenges here and there; the fundamentals work, so that's the important thing. I enjoyed the concept of the Beavers looking after the natural wildlife and the other animal encounters along the way. It's lovely to see that paying for this game is an optional plus for the developer to not only show support for them but potentially help them fund this game to become a bigger project, which is always good. Keep it up, "A Beaver's Tale", you're doing well!
Literally beat the game in 5 minutes.
