I hate that I have to not recommend this, as the game, soundtrack, and levels are really excellent and it's one of the better games out there and a lot of fun...when it works. However, the actual control is probably the single worst setup I have ever seen in my life. The default control is already not great, since you're supposed to aim at platforms in a fast-paced way using the joystick, where it fires on release, leading to awkwardness in aiming which is highly sensitive to controller drift to begin with. Now this bad control scheme I can live with, and there's even ways of rebinding within steam to make it feel good. This isn't the issue. The issue is that there are these cannon platforms where you have to time the button press to fire the cannon in a straight line. These are extremely simple obstacles and most of the time you shouldn't ever fail because of them. However, it's maybe 45% of the deaths you'll experience due to them just deciding to NOT WORK AT ALL unless you jiggle the control stick and pray a bunch that one of your many button presses will trigger it. However, due to all of the timing and cycles you need to hit, not to mention you have a very limited time to beat the stage, any "hesitation" aka mechanics not working will lead to your death. It's truly awful I'm sad to say this isn't the only issue...sometimes when you enter a cannon, it simply fires right away. There's no indication it will do that and there's no reason for it to. As well, sometimes you INSTANTLY fire off a platform after landing on it, immediately killing you since there's no chance to aim. It's ridiculous and these bugs are maybe 45-50% of your deaths if I'm being generous, meaning that a large majority of the difficulty of the game simply comes from the controls not working. I get it's supposed to be a hard game, but when you're able to do a 100% deathless run 10 times in a row of a world, yet died each time to one of the aforementioned issues, it's a huge problem. I've tried all sorts of things to fix this, and I really enjoyed it when the game was working properly, but I just can't with this. It's alright casually with the bugs, as you play the levels in chunks of 5, but trying to do any of the full world runs is like trying to win the lottery. I've tried it on at least 4 computers, one with a different OS, and always had these same issues. Nothing I could do could fix this. Hopiko has the potential to be a 9/10 game, but in reality is a 1/10.
5 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3281753361
Follow my Curator page, Fruit N Doggie Reviews, so you can be updated whenever I post a new review.

Overall Rating - Painfully Bad ★☆☆☆☆

First Impressions
Hopiko (HP) has been in my inventory for too long, especially since it's supposed to be a game on the smaller side. Because I have the bad habit of adding more titles to my library, I thought I'd decrease my backlog at least a little bit. With it being out of my mind for so much time, all that I remember of it is that it's a difficult indie shooter of some kind. At least, that's what I thought before playing it.
Gameplay
Ignoring my completely wrong impression of HP, I suppose the best fit for the genre would be a platformer, although that doesn't feel right. Instead of moving left or right and jumping as necessary, the character can't move until you fling him to the next surface. Aiming in this way doesn't maintain trajectory through a pinball sort of mechanic, with him rebounding around the board. It's more focused on speed, as he lands on each surface and stays in place until you shoot him off elsewhere. New features are introduced throughout the five worlds, but that's how the basic system works. The other important factor of the gameplay is that each world is comprised of 10 “runs,” and every run is made up of 5 stages. If you fail to clear one of the stages, you have to restart at the beginning and try again. For this reason, each of them are very short, lasting only a couple of seconds each. Additionally, each stage ends by crashing head-first into the virus. Since that's always the objective, there might be times you can avoid the intended route and skip right to it, but obstacles are placed as a means of directing the way you go. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3109689254
Controls
When first booting the game up, I had some difficulty getting it to work right, as it kept asking me to push the Menu button. What the hell does that mean? After trying everything I could, and even checking a guide about controller settings, what got it to work was just pushing one of the directions on my D-pad. Another anomaly is that it kept telling me to push one of the shoulder buttons to launch myself, but it only responded when I pushed a face button instead. It doesn't seem to be aligned exactly right, but otherwise it at least works.
Story
Every game console in the world is filled with hopiko, which keeps the systems and games running smoothly. All would be well were it not for a virus, which seemingly sprang up out of nowhere. Thankfully, an unnamed hero is here to cleanse everything of those stinkin' viruses. Or is there only supposed to be one? https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3109688375
Visuals
Lately, I've been dealing with paradoxes or contradictions with game design, and HP seems to be another one. Due to how short stages are, as well as how quickly you either pass or die, you don't spend much time seeing what the game looks like. At least, to some extent. After all, with how often you'll screw up, you'll not only see quite a bit of stages, some will get repeated numerous times. Regardless, the visuals are rather basic in the game. The main enemy is just a square with a couple of square borders surrounding it, while spiked rectangles are a common foe. As for the protagonist, his design somewhat reminds me of Mario from the NES, at least in its simplicity. He's a bit more colorful by contrast.
Sound Design
I think there might be something odd going on with the music in HP. Having little interest in clearing the first world, it's possible that making enough progress is what unlocks more of the OST. Otherwise, while on the level select screen, even though I attempt to change the track, I only have a single option available, called Bees. It's a fairly catchy tune, but wears itself out when it's the only track available. When looking on YouTube for the other songs, I thought they were pretty decent. Apparently the composer made them all using a Game Boy, which to me seems as if it'd be rather prohibitive. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3109688908
Pros
🌟 If you have a knack for HP, runs can be cleared quickly, so it'd be good for short bursts of gaming. 🌟 For people who enjoy challenging gameplay, this might make a good choice.
Cons
❌ Since failing any level requires going back to the start of a run, you have no ability to consistently practice the places you might be repeatedly failing on a later stage, “I finally made it here... and died again. Great, back to the beginning, the part I've already figured out.” ❌ Due to how this game is designed, playing it doesn't feel fun at all. Beating a stage means nothing because you're only partway through the run, and the loading times between each one is a distraction for someone trying to speed their way through. ❌ Less than 5% of players beat the first world, which is only 20% of the game's content. Those are pretty abysmal stats.
Tips
🔍 Unfortunately, it might cost a life to find out, but some shots can be made just by hitting the button and going straight. Knowing when you can make a fool-proof move is useful. 🔍 Some stages can be beaten mindlessly if you go quickly enough.
Final Thoughts
I cleared a few of the runs in the first world, and although I wasn't having a blast, I could understand why some people would return and clear them with a faster time. My interest evaporated almost instantly when I encountered the platforms that moved according to where you landed on them. Although functional and I could better learn precise aiming with my analog sticks, playing a game like this with momentum sounded dreadful to me. Even in these early stages I was repeatedly making mistakes and having to start over, and that's with the platforms more or less staying still. Personally, HP seems as if it'd be a good litmus test for a potential speedrunner, because the repetitive nature of it is only something I could imagine someone like that enjoying. For the rest of us, I wouldn't recommend the game.
