Cool game, not too difficult as long as you play conservatively. Unlike, say, Resident Evil, you usually have enough bullets for every enemy, so it's an okay strategy to explore and try to clear maps. As a plus, the SFX are very meaty.
This was a lot of fun. There's not a whole lot to it and it can easily be finished in a day. Having just played a lot of House of Necrosis, I was surprised to jump into 1 Bit Survivor and find a very similar mystery dungeon turn based style of gameplay here too, albeit much more simplistic. The game thrives on its simplicity though, from the art and music to the extremely digestible gameplay loop. It's got just enough survival horror elements too with limited ammo and a really well handled view limiting system that blurs items and enemies on the fringes giving you just enough intel to know there's something there but not enough to be clear what it is without getting closer. This element alone is probably the most memorable aspect of the game for me, since I see this handled in aggravating ways regularly with games like Darkwood showing only what falls into your flashlight cone as though your character has no peripheral vision whatsoever which feels unnatural and disorienting. Impressive to see it done so much better in a bite sized pick up and play turn based survival horror(ish) game while so many others aiming for more full length game experiences manage to drop the ball here. Which brings me to my final verdict - this game is very simple but very polished and fun as hell. All 3 characters/difficulties are worth playing and play differently enough to keep you on your toes. The story is charming but sort of a nothing story and that's fine, it's not the focus and it knows that, but the game is better overall for having it. If you like the more experimental side of survival horror games then this is absolutely worth your time and money. It's not going to scratch any resident evil or silent hill itches you've got, but you probably already know that at a glance. If you are interested in more survival horror games (experimental or traditional), come check out my curator page and peruse the lists sections, recent years have been kind to the genre and you may find some more gems in there. https://store.steampowered.com/curator/45050657/
F*cking goated. If you liked the gameplay of House Of Necrosis, but it being a grindy rpg extraction game was turning you off a little bit, 1 Bit Survivor is just perfect. I hesitated so hard to play it since I absolutely hate the mobile game market, but this isn't a traditional mobile game. There's no pay to win and you just win by making good choices and thinking a little bit. The cat is the cherry on the cake.
Really cool and recommended. Small roguelike with unique 1-bit pixel art style and grungy dithered art added on top. Small levels with high degree of strategy and replayability. Lots of options for tactics which change per-run with different bonuses and per-level with random layouts. If you're a roguelike nerd, this probably counts as a "Brough-like" genre of roguelike.
This is such a fantastic little game! Not overly long and relatively simple but well designed and satisfying to play. I just love the aesthetic of the whole thing, too, with the gun loading and firing animations and such. Just great. Also, on sale I bought it for like a buck and it's impossible not to recommend at that price. Hidden gem!
Somebody on the internet recommended it to me, saying it was supposed to be a hidden gem. Since it met all my criteria for a game to truly qualify as a hidden gem, I decided to purchase it and give it a try. The result? Easily one of the best games I’ve played in recent months. It’s exciting to play, doesn’t cost much, and constantly makes you think about how fun it is while you’re playing. I want to play it more. I want to unlock all the achievements. I love this style and the way the overall atmosphere creates a perfect (at least to me) survival horror roguelike experience. Honestly, thank you, Chaz Acheronti, for creating this game. I hope more people will discover it and have fun with this fine game.
It's not out to break the mould, but this is a turn-based roguelike with incredibly solid design. A run of 1 Bit Survivor puts you and your very low munitions supply through 28 dark and ominous days, throwing you into a new biome whenever you make it through another week. Each biome can spawn different sets of enemies, and the longer you survive, the more of those enemies will be lying in wait for you. If you've found a wrench by the end of a given week, you'll get to pick one of two random upgrades. These will boost a skill you already have, or in some cases grant you a new talent. There may only be a small handful of upgrades, but there's real impact behind each choice, and this changes even more when playing off the different strengths of the 3 playable classes. A run with a certain class might have you front-loading close-ranged firepower, while another might have you softening enemies from afar in order so that you can easily finish them off if they come too close for comfort. Being a roguelike, you can of course get a feel-bad run at the roll of a die, but most of the losses in 1 Bit survivor still feel pretty fair. You can grumble about the RNG, but chances are, you died from a bad decision - your luck just worsened it. As the name implies, the graphics are very basic. HUD elements and menus are higher fidelity, but all of the tiles in each stage are still perfectly readable despite their lower pixel count (which is 16x16, I think). There's real charm packed into every sprite, and the overall simplicity really works in a holistic sense. This game is a real treat, and it's "just one more run" factor is way more addictive than I expected it to be.
