Last year I saw a digital Ice Cold Beer in a video of SpaciesArcade. I didn't think much of it but soon after YouTube showed me an old mechanical cabinet version of the game and I got interested since it has some similarities to pinball which I love. I watched a few more related videos which YouTube remembered because it suggested the Zeke's Peak trailer to me a few months ago and I put the game in my wish list. I bought it the day it was released in Early Access. Features At this moment there are five worlds, a beginner world to get familiar with the controls, an arcade themed world, a jungle themed world, an ice themed world and the final world is an expert world. Each of the first four worlds have one or more classic levels based on the old mechanical cabinets, the other levels, 69 of them, are obstacle courses. The expert world has endless versions of all the classic levels. In the classic levels you have to guide the ball into hole 1 to hole 10 in order while avoiding the other holes and falling off of the edge of the playfield. In classic Mojave you also have to avoid the falling rocks. You score points for each hole. The faster you go the more points you earn. The endless classic levels are like the classic levels but a new round starts after you've guided the ball in the 10th hole. After the first round the bar will start to jump up by itself. With each subsequent round the intervals between autojumps become shorter. You will have to adjust your strategy along the way. In the obstacle levels you have to make your way to the finish hole as fast as you can. When you drain your ball you can continue with a subsequent run right away without having to go through the level start sequence. In some levels it's quite hard to even reach the finish but once you can make it you can try it faster to improve your position on the leaderboards. Some levels have (secret) shortcuts and challenges which will earn you Steam Achievements. Once you've finished a level you get at least one star for it, depending on how quick your run was you can earn up to three stars. It's a fun way to gauge how well you played the level. Finishing levels also levels you up. Leveling up can earn you additional balls and bars to choose from. The additional balls are a work in progress, some look nice while others look quite flat or too bright for now. Since a recent update the standard steel ball now has a mirror polish with some patina so you can see it spin, it looks great. Control I'm using the analogue sticks of my Razer Wildcat and even though they're off center it works great. Having analogue input really helps control the ball so any dual stick controller should work fine for this game. You can also play digitally using the mouse, keyboard or digital joysticks but it's much harder, however that is how the arcade cabinets are played. Separate leaderboards for digital input may be added in the future. To play digitally using a dual stick controller with analogue sticks I made a controller config. It starts with the normal layout with analogue sticks etc. however when you want to play in Cabinet Mode with digital sticks as it's intended you can press the right trigger to activate an action layer which turns the sticks digital and adds Settings to the menu-button, Credit to X and Start to Y. When you go back to Normal or Expert Mode you can deactivate the action layer with the left trigger. You can get it here: steam://controllerconfig/1093800/2120539275 View modes You can play in standard landscape mode but also in portrait mode. It's cool you can choose between these modes to play however you like. Future updates should add full cabinet support. Tips When you're going full speed the ball is easier to control than when going slowly, you can turn by (gradually) letting go of one of the sticks for a moment. You can get a running start by pushing one or both sticks before the level starts. Some levels don't start in the best state possible and to challenge the top scores on those you have to wait a bit to time the state of the level just right. You can do this on level restart but also on subsequent runs. The Achievement Challenges are either challenges or (secret) shortcuts. You should be able to tell from the top scores whether there's a secret shortcut to be found. Conclusion If you like arcade games or marble games this could be a game for you. For me personally just the classic levels alone made the purchase worth it. I am enjoying chasing the best time in the other levels though. Here are some videos of me battling the classic levels. I make it look easy but these took hundreds of attempts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7OzticcF5Ug https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ViCIrqpwes https://youtu.be/mXhGOubXcRc
Normally I shy away from Early Access games from past experiences, but having played this as a child in arcades when it first came out in 1983 I could not wait for this game to come out. It's early and doesn't have much yet but it's off to a great start-essentially you have 4 play modes-a series of tutorial levels culminating in unlocking the original arcade version, 3 other themed series of levels and the alternate original version called Ice Cold Beer, which I didn't know even existed (but then again I was 5 when it hit arcades). The games look true to the arcade originals and the controls are tailor-made for dual-stick controllers. It's one of those "easy to learn, but hard to master" games that it tougher than it looks and requires precision movements, so a dual-stick gamepad is strongly recommended. Even with the limited content you still get a good 25-30 levels, and the timed aspect of play and leaderboards offer plenty of replay value, even though there aren't as many levels now as there will be. Obviously if, like me, you are old enough to remember playing this in arcades it's a must-buy as it was a very unique game when it was first released. For everyone else, it's another nice piece of 80s arcade nostalgia and is worth a try if you're in to this sort of thing, although given more content is on the way as it works through Early Access you might want to wait until more levels & features are added for the price unless you get it on sale-during the launch week it's a great buy at the sale price (normally it will be $9 but it launched at $5.39). But I'm biased towards these games I played in my youth so for now I'm giving it a thumbs up and looking forward to more updates.
Zeke's Peak is an excellent adaptation/re-imagining of the classic mechanical arcade games Taito produced in the early '80's. There are faithful reproductions of both the Zeke's Peak and Ice Cold Beer cabinets, and they do an admirable job of recreating the feel of the originals. While I'm partial to the classic boards and would like to see more of them (and there are new classic offerings, here), this game really shines in its reinterpretation of the gameplay. The mechanics are simple; you balance a chrome ball on a bar, controlling either end of the bar with analogue sticks. Avoid hazards that would drop the ball, aim to get the ball to a target hole. Simple. What 56K Games have done is make the journey to that target hole more challenging and more fun. Bumpers, moving platforms, switches, strong winds, and a bevy of other obstacles complicate the path you can take. Ranked performance and leaderboards for better times give the player something to strive towards and should keep players engaged, even after they've cleared a stage. The visuals are bright and colourful, and reminiscent of the arcade versions, with a quirky comic feel. While this is an early access title, what is here is promising, and I look forward to see what additional content is added to the game. The price is in the sweet spot for a casual play game that you can put some dedicated skill time into, and I'd suggest checking it out (especially while it's on sale ;) ).
really nice arcade game/history! simple but addicctive ...

Яркая, занимательная аркадная игра, с множеством игровых режимов, интересной игровой механикой и отличной графикой.
Zeke's Peak developed and published by 56K Games offers some of the best feeling of an old style mechanical arcade games that when compared with the physical games plays fairly faithful and is really great fun to add to an Arcaders arsenal of amazing aformentioned collections. Each game offers a variety of challenge and a lot of replayability. Cheers and great gaming all!
Had super high hopes but unfortunately I had to request a refund. If you’re just gonna play via controller on the couch, then you’ll have no problems. I had big plans of making a dedicated cabinet for this game but, there are just WAY too many bugs. Button mapping is essentially useless , even when trying to use joytokey or x360ce. No matter what I tried, it just wouldn’t work. After No response from steam discussions, the discord channel and even messaging a developer directly, I’ve asked for a refund .
Very very good arcade game. Captures the feel of the original but gives you so much more to play with. Can't wait to see the final release, but an easy recommend at this price, given where it is going.
