After becoming a Backer of the Kickstarter, I REALLY wanted to love Yooka-Laylee. But having reached and lost to Capital B, I walked away disappointed; and I didn't even look at Yooka-Replaylee when it was released. With the upcoming release on Evercade of BK and BT though, I thought I'd give Yooka-Laylee a second go. Then I realised what Yooka-Replaylee was; and that YL owners got a 30% discount; so I bought and started playing the revision instead. My GOODNESS am I glad I did! Yes it has difficulty spikes; but to me it is what the original should have been; and all-in-all I've enjoyed it at least as much as Banjo Kazooie.

I enjoyed this game quite well, but it was also rather short compared to the games it's inspired by like Banjo Kazooie.

I played the original game and stopped playing when I learned I have to back track to collect everything in a level, because I didn't have a move yet. This game updated the original issues I had and enjoy playing it. They should've done this when they first made the game.

Man, it's a bit of a let down, ngl. This is definitely a massive improvement to the original which I still have a favorable review of but many of the original's issues are not fixable without a complete reimagining of things. The maps are still too big and not interesting enough. The controls are still, well they're serviceable but the game isn't challenging at any point. You have an aoe attack that you can spam, any combat encounter in the game can be beat by just mashing attack. Why even have enemies at that point? Credit where it's due, Replaylee made an earnest attempt to fix the main issues. They more than doubled the pagies in every level, collectables unlock meaningful rewards, so coins and feathers are actually exciting to find, and they nerfed some of the abilities to make them not feel like an alphabuild as much anymore. You can only fly from certain locations, you need to crouch-walk to stay invisible, but the projectiles still auto aim, they're still rubbish to use. I still downright don't like many of the locations, especially Hivory Tower itself. It's just not fun to navigate. The first level is actually the most cohesive one where things kinda feel like they belong together. The 4 other maps are all built with a variety of ideas which are separating each of the levels into either separate islands, separate pools, separate buildings. And as a fix they added fast travel so you can get around faster I guess, but it's a 3D platformer. Navigation IS the main gameplay. If that's not fun, then what are we even doing? I can't really stand any of the isometric or 2D sections, underwater navigation is also kinda awful ngl. The transformations are hit'n'miss, they can be cute but they often only unlock like 2 pagies and are very specific in their uses. And the characters aside from Trowzer's character design and the occasional quib between Laylee and NPCs I find them all rather uninteresting. I mean you do talk to a planette at one point and there's shopping carts in the swamp which all seem rather down on their luck, there's some potential there maybe. Overall, massive improvements. But still not a 3D platformer I'd recommend to anyone.

This is the most side-grade of a remaster ever. It kind of feels like the 'New Game+' of a game, like the second playthrough that barely has anything changed. It's still the same kinda fun Yooka-Laylee, but with like... a couple more enemies sprinkled in, and you get dumped with a crapton of abilities from the start instead of unlocking them gradually.
