Sort of satisfies the craving for a 3d collectathon like Banjo Kazooie, but kinda janky
+++ Adorable and endearing character designs. +++ Family-friendly across the board. +++ Tickles the exploration and scavenger-hunt itch. --- Questionable challenges and minigames. --- Frustrating camera controls. --- Uneven difficulty, especially between regular play and boss fights. --- Oppressively cynical humor. This is the kind of title for which a "side-thumbs" rating would've been the best choice. It's not a very bad offering per se, but the cons manage to outweigh the pros just enough to tip the balance into this unfortunate outcome. At the core of this issue is what appears to be a dead-set intent to reproduce the experience of Banjo-Kazooie, warts and all. The rub is that BK is a game created years ago with tools from years ago and designed with the thinking of years ago. Bringing this into the future, completely unchanged, makes for an experience that can feel tone-deaf if not outright player-hostile at times. The basic core gameplay is perfectly fine. Finding the goodies and exploring the world is by far the title's greatest strength. But it's marred with minigames and challenges that are not only poorly designed; the poor design is even lampshaded by the characters as if to somehow rub salt in the wound. This is a game for die-hard purists who want nothing but the most authentic vintage experience possible. For everyone else however, competing titles are likely to offer a much smoother experience.
Get the remake, do yourself a favor. This is not as bad as the internet would make you believe but it is a death by many small cuts. The Levels are huge and feel kind of empty. Some quills tend to be "too well" hidden, making it super frustrating finding the few your missing in the large levels. I am also not a fan of the "minigames" as they last too long and you gotta beat them twice. Like if I beat the highscore on the first run, why do I need to play again? Also the main idea seems to be that you just do a level a little bit, move to the next, get a new skill and come back, but they don't give you a hint that maaaybe you need a skill here, so you waste your time... The remake fixes these huge issues with a map and having all skills from the get go. Not sure about the minigames being tedious
Genuinely hate the level of tedium this game presents. Collectathon, sure. But Yikes... I keep trying to enjoy this game, I really do, but the open design coupled with the deep necessity of buying upgrades is SO exhausting. I don't mind doubling-back in platformers once I have an upgrade, but the open design leaves me feeling frustrated when I encounter something that "needs an upgrade" I don't have.
Fun, cute platformer in need of some bug fixes and quality of life improvements. If your nostalgic for banjo kazooie but wanna play something new this is a perfect choice .
I love the idea of a new generation 3D platformer in the ilk of Banjo, Spyro and Croc, but this is a bit on the frustrating side. While Steam hasn't counted my full hours here for some reason, about 4 hours in, I can't get past some of the quality of life issues. The gameplay and characters are fun. The 'voice' acting is a little annoying, but the actual characters are pretty good - the snake chap, Trowzer(?) is inspired design imo, and there is very clear Banjo Kazooie influence all around. The collection and level design is pretty good. A few weird clipping issues here and there, with some areas allowing you to use map edges as jumping points and others not, but not too bad. Good amount of immediately clearable areas and backtracking when you get new abilities. What kills it for me though is the camera and controls, as well as some of the skills. The "tutorial" is silly. No indication of what buttons do what (for me anyway, maybe a bug?), no indication of the random extra buttons that function to no avail until you get the requisite skill, and a lot thrown at you all at once as soon as you hit the first big level. On top of that, it feels like you are controlling Yooka through a thick mud or something, it's incredibly sluggish. Having come from the Spongebob games, it just feels very wrong. I was playing M+KB to start as the gamepad simply wasn't working, and my god the camera is awful. I shouldn't have input lag or anything, but again - moving through molasses. I think a lot of this has probably been fixed in the remastered edition Replaylee, but I don't think I can bring myself to buy that at the small discount for owning the original. This is the perfect -mediocre- rating game for me, but lacking that, it has to be a thumbs down; the QoL is so annoying for a 2017 release.
Es un juego meh, si bien no es el peor, el banjo kazoie es mejor.
I have tried multiple times to love this game, but I just can't do it. The biggest issue is the controls. The whole game controls like an ice level (and the actual ice level takes that even further). Even though it is a 3D platformer, the platforming itself was the biggest issue for me.
ta yooka
Kinda feel like us early adapters that bought this on launch and were very disappointed shoulda got replayee for free but what ever. Just mean i can still ♥♥♥♥ on the game cause I'm not paying to be disappointed again.
