Replaylee should be free for owners of Laylee, you know what a disappointment this game was and how much money you guys made off of kickstarter. Shame. Bad.

I don't understand where most of the negative feedback is coming from. This is very much a faithful 3D platformer akin to the original Banjo Kazooie games. The writing is clever and hilarious, the levels are expansive (and can be kind of empty at parts, but not terribly), the boss fights are fun, the skills are great and easy to use, and I love the progression. Overall great game, cheaper than anything that came out on N64, and absolutely worth it if you were a fan of the classic platform collectathons.
At the end of the day Yooka-Laylee feels empty and full of disappointing moments. An underwhelming experience and frustrating because you can easily tell the potential is just out of reach. The character designs are its greatest strength, but it lacks satisfaction in every other aspect. When even just one aspect of movement is weak, it's a major detriment for a 3D platformer. Exploration is convoluted. Having to reload areas for world expansion promotes backtracking everywhere you already explored. Locking areas behind movement upgrades doesn't work so well in a game that has so little distinction between out-of-bounds and intended exploration. Or rather, many times it feels like you are attempting to exploit something, only to find out half the time, that it's what you were supposed to do. It's the same issue that Hello Neighbor has; A world that's appealing at a distance, but lacking as an actual first-hand experience. More mundane issues start to stack up and made me give up on wanting to care for this game. - Enemy variety is hopelessly nonexistent. This is almost crucial in a game where its characters and variety in worlds are a huge attractor. - Putting stamina on the only fun movement mechanic makes the game tiring and interrupts the flow of what would've been much greater. Especially when the levels are so large and barren. And for levels that are so large and empty, there sure are far too many loading transitions. - Minigames/tasks are easy, but extended, and always felt like they were missing something--whether that be additional assets, actual puzzles, or contention in any meaningful way. It causes all of them to be extremely boring--even for a child. - Absorbing an element for a specific task replaces some movement mechanics rather than adds onto them. This results in less fun gameplay for these sections because it leaves a large portion of players having to wait to be able to play how they want to. - There is a lack of simple intuitive logic that will leave its target audience to give up on the game by at most half-way through. By that I mean, even just rolling to traverse slick surfaces doesn't make sense. This is fine if there is consistency, but there isn't any. To survive cold areas you must absorb fire. To survive fire you can also absorb fire--and only 1 of 2 different types of fire. To traverse even slickier surfaces than normal, you must absorb honey. These surfaces are identical to ones that you can't survive without absorbing fire. Across the board there is a lack of cohesion. Not hard at all to figure out as an adult by simple fast experimentation, but I can see how a child would be incredibly frustrated by this mess. And you can quickly see that by example for the fact that only 21% of players have beaten the 2nd boss.
This game sucks. It feels more like it was designed to infuriate instead of be fun. Annoying music, the characters "talk" with stupid noises, the camera can be erratic and there is far too much terrible and unskippable dialogue every time you attempt to do something. I had to force myself to play this, and the force is not strong enough to finish it.
When the bear and bird duo disappeared out of relevancy after being too lazy and building vehicles, this game appeared to bring that kind of 3D platforming nostalgia back. This time, a chameleon and bat go collect magical pages in bizarre and atmospheric worlds to stop a capitalist bee from using books to make a major profit. Compared to the series they are based on, they have a lot more freedom with their movement and there is a more variety with all the things in each world. The art and the music is great and the dialogue captures that old school feel of causal and snark. It really does remain faithful to its inspiration with its quirkiness. Despite this being a spiritual successor and well polished, there are a good number of issues that would give it some setbacks. The expanded freedom makes it a bit hard to tell what is considered out of bounds, especially since one of the skills you learn is the ability to fly around anywhere anytime. You have to expand each world to fully collect everything and there isn't even a map to compensate for the expanded places to check. Lastly the puzzles to find the pages tend to be more obtuse and roundabout than expected. The forced quiz shows kind of breaks the tempo of the game (you deal with two when progressing the hub) and there's also boss battles in each world but while that was a thing in Banjo-Tooie, the bosses seem to be more aggressive and annoying to deal with, with the final boss taking forever and doesn't even offer checkpoints. Granted some of this was fixed and improved with the remastered version, but with the base version, people have to admit there are some flaws with it. Despite its flaws, its still a good game, even before the remastered version made this version obsolete, but chances are you probably would buy the updated one.
The first and last game I ever backed on Kickstarter. Probably responsible for my continuing distaste for the entire idea of crowdfunding and anything that markets itself as "inspired by the classics" as a prime selling point. I thought that maybe, after not playing it for 10 years, I'd give it another go- maybe it wouldn't be so bad without the funder's remorse fresh in my head. But no. This isn't just bad, this is straight up depressing. It's just sad. That Playtonic found such a profoundly all consuming way to suck the joy out of something is almost impressive. Perhaps only overshadowed by their commitment to not learning a single damn thing from games that they themselves designed. This is your just desserts when you make people into heroes and icons, and put them on pedestals. The controls are floaty. The level design is beyond amateur- people I knew in college who had never made a game in their lives could ♥♥♥♥ out better levels than this for term projects- and what do you do with them (besides "♥♥♥♥ all", which is 80% of every world)? Go back to single-note collecting and put double the amount in there. It's astonishing. There are times when a studio refuses to learn from others and unfixes a fixed problem. Then there's this, when the people who fixed it are the same ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ people breaking it. It's mind blowing. Playtonic literally can't even learn from themselves, about something they did better 17 years before they made this. Every single thing that happens in this game is like they tried to take something they already figured out and screw it up as bad as possible on purpose. The few things that show a shade of maybe working only get that far by being cheap replacements for copyrighted characters they can no longer use, because why try to inject something new into the mix when you can just make "what we had before, but watered down"? Maybe it's some joke; ex-Rare devs having a laugh at people for wanting another 3D collectathon. Taking their money and slopping some garbage out to fill the content trough. (And yeah, I know Replaylee is a thing, and apparently fixes a lot of mechanical issues and so forth. But if Playtonic thinks they're scraping another cent out of my wallet ever again, they're beyond delusional.) My hazy memories of a decade past tricking me into giving it 1 star were being generous. The fact that a single person out there thinks that this has any resemblance to the games its so desperately trying to be is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ joke.
I've heard mixed opinions about this one, but personally I had lot of fun! The game was also surprisingly difficult at times, but not in an annoying way ^^
