Overall, a good indie adventure game. Good Stuff --------------- - The graphics are really nice. - Well written, although I would have like it better, if it was a bit more text heavy in some parts. (Maybe that's just me) - It's funny at times without trying too hard. - Logical puzzles. - Simple interface - Not too short, not too long Not so good ----------------- - Some of the dialogs feel a bit underdeveloped. - The game doesn't include full voice over. Although, I guess that it is something to be expected at this price point. - Some things will be too familiar for veterans of the genre. Overall ---------- It's a pleasant game with high production value especially in the graphics area. No, It's not as good as Monkey Island 3 or Day Of The Tentacle. Personally, I would have preferred if it was a bit more challenging (then again, I have finished almost all point & click adventures) For an indie game, at this price, it's a good choice.
While this game is certainly worth its price, thing is that it has many disadvantages. Incomplete (or, more accurately, hardly any) and irritating voice acting, puzzles that, some of them, lack any kind of logic, and a quite mediocre story. The developer tried to put some humor into it, but, to be honest, I didn't laugh at all while playing it. Still, I enjoyed playing it - it was worth my time. I feel like it deserves a neutral review rather than a positive one. But, overall, it was a nice first try. Till next time, don't forget to point & click!
More interesting reviews on Fenol Baron Approves Curator Page
Another day, another narcissist and silly hero tries to find and accomplish at least some feats in his kingdom, forgetting about prudence and caution. "Yet Another Hero Story" is a humorous approach to questions of heroism, adventure, mischievous tricks and resourcefulness in the most dangerous situations, vividly reminding us of the times of adventure games from the legendary companies LucasArts and Sierra. All the canons of the genre are respected, while it pleases that the game does not forget that it is from 2019. The 2D environment is drawn on a very good technical level, everything looks very bright, juicy, a real fairy kingdom really opens up before you - with dark forests, caves, castles, sinister dungeons that contain prisoners. Let the graphics and not for millions, but I even like it so much that some graphic flaws are visible in it, showing the absence of a huge budget, because how much more human the developers have made their project, how much manual labor has been invested in drawing details and elaboration of small things. From this it becomes somehow very warm in the soul, and it becomes so pleasant to spend time in the game. The plot of the game is very traditional, in many respects even imagining itself to be a parody of fairy-tale stories. The silly, but very charming main character, the obligatory mustached main villain (similar to Seville from the game with the same name), the princess in trouble, a huge pantheon of fairy-tale characters - touchy trolls, fairies, bloodthirsty rabbits, giant spiders, witches and many more. Humor constantly keeps the bar, never slipping into blatant insult or trying to become as black as possible. In some places he is cheesy, but this light silliness is so charming and kind that it is perceived very soulfully, it fits the fabulous setting just fine. And there are, of course, flaws in the game – pixel-hunting in some moments is incredibly tough, several applications of objects are very unintuitive, several times I have lost the thread of logic, but all of them are covered by that light and unobtrusive charm, kindness and fun that distinguish this game. This is a really funny humorous tale, which is very easy to fall in love with for its easy mood and a sincere desire to please and make your player laugh.
Very much enjoyed this game. Happy that there are still people dedicating their time to this nostalgic and fun genre. If you like 2D point and click games such as Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, etc. this will be right up your alley. You can tell that that the creator has put a lot of effort and passion into it! Keep up the good effort and hope to see another game.
It's a pity I can't vote with a so so, but if you force me to pick between yes and no, sorry it's a no. The game is cheap and has its fun moments, there are a few jokes that made me laugh a couple times. The puzzle difficulty is mixed, sometimes the solution is obvious but you can't seem to know how to tell the character to do something. Sometimes the goal is not clear enough. Also there's a couple of pixel hunting puzzles that I personally hate very much. The graphics are quite good actually, sometimes they feel a bit off or amateurish but I like them. The music is catchy and easy to sing along (which I found myself doing) but it also seems very amateur and sometimes it's off beat (odd). Anyway, try it if you want to play a clone of Monkey Island that's just a few hours long. The story isn't much but as I said, the game is fun at times,
Pros: - Good art style/animation - Humorous dialogue - Goofy/fun cast of characters - Music Cons: - Odd/bizarre puzzle solutions, unfulfilling puzzles with unclear objectives - Very hard to see items - Abysmal and incomplete voice acting - Commas in dialogue are used incorrectly, making some of it awkward to read I hate to say this, but I didn't finish the game. I just couldn't do it anymore, I found it frustrating and not fun to play through. I wasn't even stuck when I decided I was done, I simply was just not having fun. There were just way too many instances of me getting stuck because I missed an item that I didn't see, or something I could click that I didn't see or notice, despite looking thoroughly. Some items were way too small and hard to see. I saw a review say "finding items is part of the game exploration and it's an integral part of the genre"... I think that's a pretty ridiculous opinion. This isn't supposed to be a hidden object game. I shouldn't need to put my face right up to the screen to see items. I never did that at any point and I have good vision, but I found that it was too much in this game. Of course there's a little bit of this kind of stuff in most point and click adventure games, but in the great or even good games, it's not an issue or even worth talking about, other than perhaps a brief mention of it. It's just too overbearing in this game. The voice acting is, quite frankly, really horrible and honestly, pretty useless. I'm not exactly sure the point of including voice acting in the game when 95% of the game is text. It sucks because the game had some good things going for it, but I found that the flaws just completely overshadowed the entire experience. The game is so close to being good, but I just can't say that it is. Flaws aside, I think the majority of people who gave the game a positive review state that it's not an amazing game. Everyone seems pretty ho-hum about it. There's definitely a chance that fans of point and click adventure games will enjoy this game, but I personally just can't recommend it.
This is one of those games that I wish I could give a neutral rating as opposed to a "recommend" or "no recommend." When forced to choose I just feel it's negative points slightly outweigh it's positive. 'Yet Another Hero Story' exactly what you should expect, so forgettable and generic that it doesn't even have it's own real name. It's just another in a long line of hero stories. With a name like that I guess it was somewhat evocative of movie spoofs like 'Scary Movie' or 'Not Another Teen Movie,' but this game didn't manage to successfully spoof any other games with a hero story it simply recycled some common tropes of a hero's journey. The writing was really blasé and the text was rife with grammatical and spelling errors, something I could overlook if the story was at least still engaging but it was just not a very exciting story and lacked any real depth. It tried to be humorous, but it mostly falls flat. The characters are okay, but slightly underdeveloped with little backstory and little to make them memorable or endear them to you. The gameplay itself was frustrating. I grew up playing classic point & click adventures from Sierra and Lucas Arts. I still replay them and I love playing new games that are done in a retro style that's similar to those classics. I don't mind dealing with some of the issues that commonly arose in the genre but I found it to be a little too much in this specific game. The pixel hunting in this game was really terrible. I've enjoyed and played Torrin's passage where you've had to literally find single pieces of grass that would agree to let you cross them. I've played games where you have to find a specific spot on the wall for a secret button. This game just really epitomizes bad pixel hunting. "Bad pixel hunting?" you might be asking yourself. Yes, bad, because pixel hunting done well can still be fun and feel rewarding. Adding a glimmer to a tiny spot that draws your attention to it for example, but still requires you to notice it and closely examine it makes for good pixel hunting. At least in the examples from above I knew I was expected to hunt for something. This game plays almost like a hidden object game where you don't even know what you are supposed to be looking for. Without a highlight hotspot option it can be very difficult to find the objects you need to progress especially since some of the quest objectives/directions are too vague and so many of the objects are barely noticeable or blend in too much with their background. Then there's the weird voicing. I don't mind playing games which aren't voiced. I don't even mind playing games with bad voice acting. What I find annoying about this game is that most of the conversations have the first line voiced but the rest of the text is not. Really they should have just picked one or the other, but instead you start a conversation with voice and then nothing after that. The voice acting itself and the quality of the recording is also all over the place with some of it good and some of it actually down right bad. On the positive side the solutions to the problems are pretty logical and easy to figure out even if finding the objects you would need are not. This game is also a little disappointing in terms of achievements. There are a total of 20 achievements, but only 3 that are missable and require some additional action. That doesn't make for a very challenging gameplay trying to get them all. As long as you play through and finish the game you will unlock 17/20 achievements and the other three are pretty easy to get without really trying. Without looking at a guide I did get all 20 on my first (and only) play through. It took me about 5.5 hours to get through the game and if you managed to find objects that eluded me for a while, I would guess you could play it in less. $4.99 full price is a relatively reasonable amount money for the amount of game time but it just doesn't feel rewarding to play. I guess if you really love the Point & Click genre and you find this on sale, it's probably still worth a try, but don't be surprised if you have to refer to a guide because you can't find something related to pixel hunting and don't expect a riveting story.
Meh, very weak recommend, if it's on sale. It's kind of fun, but has some serious annoyances too. The humor is OK, dumb and corny, but not Monkey Island or Leisure Suit Larry level. No option to run the game windowed instead of fullscreen. This is a classic "try combos of items in your bag and clickable spots / NPCs until something semi-logical works". Many of the obvious combos don't work, but keep trying, some combo eventually will. There are a few items that seem like they might be important and you need to get them, but nope, they're red herrings. MILD SPOILERS: The hero has a donkey buddy. Who the hero completely ignores for most of the game. And who plays no real role in the plot past the first scene. Weird. Like the devs had plans for the donkey then dropped them, but left the donkey in. No Shrek jokes, sorry. There's one cutscene where it might seem like the game is broken / frozen; keep looking for objects in the scene, one is there. On my Mac, given that the game's graphics were choppy / jumpy at times and the voices kept dropping out, the scene being a bug seemed reasonable. Haha, no, the weird frozen scene was intentional, haha. There is a maze you have to get through, resetting back to the beginning if you take a wrong turn takes way too long. By the time I finally got through the maze, I was about ready to punt the game.
Very highly recommended but to a fault. I love adventure games, especially one like this which has the humor of monkey island and the wit of toon-struck. Classic point n click adventure. You can go non linear with some of the items and interactions. And the seemingly handdrawn ish cartoon style is great. However, some of the items are very hard to see, buried within other pixels it makes it tedious at times to backtrack to places you've been just because you missed something so minute and blended. The majority of items make sense except for a few times when there was no way you'd combine or interact with items in that manor which resulted in consulting the walkthrough. At times I wish the game would give at least some hint as to what to do next! Otherwise I absolutely enjoyed this game. It was the perfect blend of gameply, exploration and humor without being too over the top. I highly recommend it and can't wait to see more from this developer. Thumbs up!
nice little gem !!!!!!!!!!! Makes fun, good graphics cool sound and nice little voice acting :) the puzzles are not too hard etc. so you don't get stuck with some wired solutions like in the old sierra or monkey island things. about ~ 3h playtime but in sale for 2.5 € totally worth it ah and easy 100% achievements! Really nice ! Buy it !
