Listen to me. Listen. I have sunk 50 hours over two weeks into this 6-year-old JRPG. You might be saying to yourself "why on earth would I care about 50+ hours of a pulpy, over-the-top yakuza crime drama, I don't even like mahjong" and I need you to understand that yes you should and yes you do. Ichiban Kasuga is one of the best-written JRPG protagonists in recent memory IMO. He's a 42-year-old golden retriever. He has two brain cells and they're both more emotionally intelligent than they have any right to be. You'll probably be able to roughly guess where the story is going (it telegraphs a lot if you're paying attention), but you likely won't guess how it gets there because it'll do something completely off the wall and it works because Ichiban is written the way he is. The gameplay is fairly standard turn-based JRPG stuff, though the job system is fun and creative. There are significant, concrete rewards for exploration and engaging with the side stories. The minigames are mostly dumb fun, though some of them offer you an alternate route to juice your stats in one way or another. You can largely ignore the ones that don't appeal to you. The management sim minigame becomes a free money button after a certain point, though, so there are some you definitely should spend a little time on, and if you like riichi mahjong and shogi, you'll have an even better time. If I have one gripe, it's that some of the boss fights are a bit overtuned; if you go in underleveled or unprepared they're straight up unfair and will steal half your lunch money every time you lose. That said, they're completely doable if you use the resources available to you. Most of the fights are relatively easy; the few you can't just bulldoze expect you to either grind your way to outleveling them or figure out how to strategize around your party composition, experiment with different jobs, check what the shops around you have available for consumables, hit the various loot piñatas left lying around, use your buffs and debuffs, and so on. I think the second method is more fun, but your mileage may vary. Overall 10/10 big dumb JRPG and worth every single cent.
This will be the easiest JRPG you've ever played for MANY hours, then you will fight Majima and the game will suddenly difficulty spike to an insane extent and expect you to grind for hours to continue. I knew going into this game that grinding would be expected, and I did so, but for it to go from so insanely easy to instantly getting party wiped is absolute trash game design. I seriously did not lose a single fight up until this point, and I did most of the side content, that is how bad the difficulty spike is. If you want to play this game, grind more than you think you will need to because you might think you are prepared but you are not. I don't get why everybody kisses these games' asses like they have no serious issues.

Loved every moment of this game. So much was unexpected and the combined silliness mixed with a very intense story is what has always made this series one of the greatest
