"kirtu is the gray yakuza, aiyama is the red one, seejimo- sayjimmo is the green one and the blue one I- I forgot his name no joke" memes aside, a replay after 5 years and as someone who stayed on the hill of Y4 is among the best I... I got a reality check, kinda? So where to begin huh, I guess the combat and this time around I... really didnt feel the same as I did the first time I played and I have no idea if it was because Hard mode changes how enemies spam attacks (played on hard this time). Because ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ while Akiyama's moveset is still among my favorites I kept getting stun locked/ grab locked so often it's baffling. Not just Akiyama. Enemies really loved to spam more-so than the other games AS FAR AS I REMEMBER. The movesets themselves are good, besides Saejima, when I first played I hated his moveset - and now, I still hate it. I just dont find it enjoyable. BUT NOW TANIMURA, Tanimura initially I was indifferent about, but thanks to Snake style in LJ being one of my recent favorites... Tanimura this time around was a genuine blast to play and this time around I actually did side content with him. Kiryu is Kiryu and genuinely fun to play in 4. Okay now music - still top 3 RGG soundtracks, next. Okay now story - overhated still but there's a caveat, I need to replay 5 in order to see how exactly I would place this story. Because this time around unlike last time I noticed quite a few iffy things that grinded my gears (and no, not rubber bullets, in fact this time around YOU CAN TELL when they're used in cutscenes if you're paying attention) I can atleast say that this time around Akiyama's and Saejima's part both were inferior compared to my first run, ESPECIALLY Akiyama's. This time though, Tanimura and Kiryu both shined. In fact, I'd say Tanimura is my personal favorite part of the game. ITS WILD how i've grown to like him and his moveset and his story more after 5 damn years. uhh what else, oh yeah, Kamurocho in 4 is the best rendition of Kamurocho - easily. The roofs and tunnels provide SO MUCH personality. Its just a shame that you basically lightly jog from one end to the other (I legit setup a cheat engine speed hotkey to speed it up, ♥♥♥♥'s bad man) okay yea now thats it for now, I think this replay both cemented my love for the game and lowered it. Which I did not expect honestly. But again, no idea if Hard mode made the enemies like that. If it did, please refrain from playing on Hard mode. The constant grabbing and stunlocks are not fun... looking at you final boss #4 (though this time i was prepared) 8/10 - still contains top 3 best finales of RGG games and despite the iffy story stuff, it makes up for it in absurdity. Please no Kiwami 4. The game doesn't need it.
I love this game series. Never disappointed me.
genuinely KILL whoever came up with the Saejima and Haruka meeting scene.
really good game, i have some issues with some plot points, specially at the end of the game, but its okay. all 4 characters feel great to use, with unique quirks and characteristics. Akiyama has a kick-based style, focusing on quick and stylish movements. Saejima is a beast, he drinks bossbars for breakfast and destroys everyone. Tanimura is a quick trickster with a high focus on heat actions and parries. Kiryu... well he's the good old Kiryu. the story starts amazing, presenting each character with its own story, while slowly merging all of them together. the final... well, it feels really rushed. you don't really get to see the protagonists interact with each other that much, plus the final has no intention it is just a fight with a different important character for each protagonist, without any intention. the only one that really makes sense is Tanimura since, well, he's fighting his own corrupt boss, but why is Daigo fighting? the same with Kido, he feels like a forced antagonist... Arai is acceptable, even though at the end everyone is friends with each other for some reason? anyways, its a great game, not my favorite in the series, but its nice and entertaining.
