Xuan-Yuan Sword 2 is a classic Chinese role-playing game that represents an important chapter in the history of Asian RPGs. Originally released in the mid-1990s before arriving on Steam, the game showcases the early ambitions of DOMO Studio in crafting a fantasy adventure deeply rooted in Chinese mythology rather than the medieval European traditions commonly found in Western RPGs. Although its presentation reflects its age, the game continues to stand out thanks to its compelling lore, memorable cast, and cultural authenticity. For players interested in experiencing one of the defining titles of the long-running Xuan-Yuan Sword franchise, this release offers a fascinating glimpse into the series' origins while preserving the charm of its original design. The story begins with an ancient conflict between humanity and the demon race, both created by the goddess Nüwa. Humanity's desperation eventually leads to the creation of the legendary Xuan-Yuan Sword, a divine weapon forged to end the war. While the sword succeeds in stopping the conflict, the victory comes at a devastating cost that leaves lasting scars on the world. Years later, players take control of He Ran, a young martial artist who leaves his secluded life to journey across a land filled with political unrest, supernatural creatures, and forgotten secrets. Alongside companions who each carry their own burdens and motivations, he gradually becomes involved in events tied to the legendary blade and the fragile balance between humans and demons. The narrative successfully blends mythology, personal growth, and historical fantasy into a story that grows increasingly engaging as new mysteries unfold. One of the game's greatest strengths is its dedication to Chinese culture. The world is inspired by ancient literature and folklore, incorporating legendary beasts, mythical artifacts, and traditional beliefs into nearly every aspect of its setting. Instead of relying on familiar fantasy tropes, the adventure introduces players to locations, creatures, and legends drawn directly from Chinese mythology, giving the experience a distinctive identity that remains refreshing even today. This cultural richness extends beyond the storyline, making exploration feel meaningful as players encounter references that celebrate classical Chinese history and legends. Gameplay follows the familiar structure of traditional turn-based role-playing games, combining exploration, conversations with non-playable characters, dungeon crawling, and strategic combat. Battles reward careful planning rather than quick reactions, encouraging players to balance offensive abilities, defensive strategies, and resource management. A particularly notable feature is the Monster Fusion Vessel system, which allows defeated monsters to be captured, summoned during battles, or fused with other creatures and items to produce stronger allies and valuable equipment. This mechanic adds an enjoyable layer of experimentation and customization, giving players more options than simple character leveling while encouraging creative approaches to combat and progression. Visually, Xuan-Yuan Sword 2 embraces a timeless artistic style inspired by traditional Chinese ink paintings. While the pixel graphics clearly reflect the technology of its original era, the detailed environments, expressive character portraits, and imaginative monster designs continue to convey a strong sense of atmosphere. The soundtrack complements the visuals with melodies influenced by traditional Chinese music, reinforcing both emotional story moments and the mystical tone of the adventure. Together, the art direction and music create a world that feels cohesive and culturally authentic despite the game's technical limitations. Naturally, players should expect certain aspects to feel dated. The interface lacks many conveniences found in modern RPGs, random encounters can become repetitive, and navigation occasionally requires patience. Another significant limitation is the absence of English language support, meaning the game is primarily intended for players who can read its supported languages or those willing to rely on external translation tools. Even so, these shortcomings are balanced by the game's historical value and the originality of its setting, allowing dedicated RPG fans to appreciate what made the title so influential during its original release. An additional advantage of the Steam edition is that it also includes the original Xuan-Yuan Sword, allowing newcomers to experience the beginning of the franchise before diving into this sequel. Together, these games highlight the evolution of one of China's most respected role-playing series and demonstrate the creativity that helped establish SOFTSTAR ENTERTAINMENT as a major name in the region's gaming industry. Xuan-Yuan Sword 2 remains a rewarding experience for players who enjoy classic RPGs, historical game preservation, and mythology-driven storytelling. Its rich cultural foundation, engaging narrative, inventive monster fusion system, and memorable audiovisual presentation outweigh its aging mechanics and accessibility barriers. While it may not appeal to everyone due to its retro design and language limitations, it continues to serve as a remarkable example of early Chinese game development and a worthy addition to any retro RPG collection. Rating: 8/10
Steam Deck OK!
good hood good
