Charts
Each storefront's own chart, in its own country — the closest public signal to sales where none is published. A country missing from a list is one we don't collect there, not one where the game doesn't chart.
No United States chart position — it charts only in the markets below.
Discounts
Every price cut of more than 20% we have observed, in each market that quoted one, with this game's chart position on either side of it. These are episodes, not a model: a sale is one event, and one event cannot tell you what the next one will do.

X4 has had its ups and downs. The current 9.0 update that is out at the time of my writing this review is simply perfection. I fell in love with X4 the first time I ever played it and it will go down as one of my favorite games of all time. Stunning, beautiful ships and visuals, seemingly endless unique space to cruise around in all while a beautiful and varied soundtrack plays. Pew pewing in epic space battles is ENDLESSLY fun and visually stunning! I could (and have) spend hours manipulating the economics of the galaxy, starting conflicts and subtly altering the course of war. The game does have a decent learning curve and can suffer from a little bit of slowdown late game. At any rate, I have sunk hundreds of hours into X4. Egosoft is a solid publisher and this game is obviously a labor of love that I imagine I'll sink hundreds of hours more into.

Latest in each market: best RU #70, worst CA #92 · 4 markets collected
Reviews, worldwide (the counter carries no country): 12.22/day in the week to Aug 4 → 14.43/day in the week after.
For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 24 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 9 places towards #1, and the 2,404 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

Don't get fooled by the number of hours clocked (265 hours at review) At least 90% of that "playtime" is AFK. Real playtime is about 25h. I did get my value out of this game as i paid 12€ on sale but i DO NOT recommend full price (50€). Why is that? Yes, I bought it because there's potential. X4 has some of the best-looking ships. The scale is incredible, and building out your own faction could be satisfying. It has this nice transition form worrying about personal problems, to worrying about the state of your realm. The grandeur of things you worry about changes multiple times. The problem is that the game gives you all these beautiful ships, fleets, stations, power, money… but almost no meaningful sink for it, except more of the same. So my gripe with the game is the opposite of what people praise or hate. No, the game is not complicated it's not even complex. If you play the tutorials and pay a little attention you'll be good. I rather find it TOO bland, because all factions follow the same rules, there's one type of currency, the logic / wiring behind the whole galaxy is the same. Factions only vary in ship stats, resource use, production and requirements. The reason i don't recommend it, is because of how fast you reach a point in the game where there's nothing more to do, you've seen it all, you have it all. Yes, you can probably buy content packs at that point, but that drives the "price / fun time"-ratio down further. If you find in the future, that i have clocked in 700h in this game, you can assume i actively played and enjoyed 70h, then i will update the review to recommended. But as it stands, it's feels mostly like a mix of a walking simulator and screensaver. Endgame is looking at the map and pure number-go-up fantasy with no real money sink, besides snowballing further. All it took me to get there was snowballing to the wharf, which took 25h hours active gameplay (could have been done in much less active time if i hadn't been new to the game). The other 240h are the AFK time inbetween, waiting for the game to do it's thing (generating resources). The game has been running day and night, with me checking in before and after work to spend some resources and keep the snowball going. Yes i there's missions you could do but for what? My stations are making much more money passively than i could make in those stupid hour long missions. I won't play a 1h-fetch-quest, sorry. Most manual flying was limited to playing through the main story, which is about 8h of playtime and while it was not super bad, i wasn't a lot of fun either. It felt rather forced upon me because some parts of the sandbox are plot-locked. After experiencing most of the game, partially due to it's menu-heaviness, the game eventually starts to feel like a mix of german bureaucracy and opening a folder in windows.
Very good game. But there is one thing that makes it very anoying. Its how the out of system combat works. And you want your patrols squads to do their job and not dance around enemies indefinetely when you are not looking... You are ins system the nenemy die in seconds... not in system then enemy is immortal. That is not fun when you try to focus on managing your empire... So I dont recoment it, because its just a source of flustrations...
I know there are tons of folks who love this game. I really want to, but the crap controls make that impossible. I can never make it past scanning the Scale Plate station. It's supposed to be 'easy' but there you are with no experience, a weak ship, crap controls and a swarm of enemy fighter that blow you out of the sky. Guess I wasted some money on this one.
Bestes Weltraumsim ever. Der Soundtrack ist Top. und bei jedem Durchlauf ist alles anders. Top!!!
not sure if even the developers know how to interact with this thing. its definitely not a playable game.
