Well ain't this nifty! A nice tetris-like with a little scrabble DNA mixed in and you've got yourself Writer's Block! Simple enough idea that becomes quite engaging in practice with a fair difficulty that had me wondering if I was the idiot all along (spoiler alert: I was). The themes are a neat little touch with each having it's own music and reactions to the game as you play. It's a very chill aesthetic that is easy to forget as you get lost in the dictionary in your mind, frantically trying to think of something....anything that you can make with what you've got. Seems to work great on Steam Deck as far as I can tell, and as of this review, there's already been an update to adjust the frequency ratio of vowels to consonants, and I can tell a significant difference in letter distribution.
they're slick for doing this
This is a really fun and stylish falling block game where you spell out words. What first drew me into the game is the very striking pixel art and music / sound design. The game uses limited palette pixel art with 8 bit style music and sound effects, and it all feels nostalgic but also fresh and cool. There are different themes to unlock which have their own music, animated backgrounds, and palettes. The game has combos and chains, and the scoring rewards building bigger words. Although it helps to have a big vocabulary, the gameplay is more strategic than you might expect. It feels like you can survive a while just through skillful use of three and four letter words. There are a lot of specific strategic wrinkles that make the game fun to learn. For example, I'm still figuring out how to deal with 'Q's! The hold function helps a lot for this. I'm still learning the game, so I'm mostly just playing for survival and to enjoy the vibes, but the high level of polish makes it fun to play as a beginner. If the idea of a falling block word game appeals to you, give this a try!
near perfection, when more words are added via community submission, this game will be legendary.
Writer's Block is a fantastic and addictive combo of a falling block game and a word game. Unlocking the different themes and doing the missions warms you up to all the systems and strategies and I got absolutely hooked on trying to better my score in the endless mode. The music is excellent and the visuals and effects have so much juice that it's easy to enter a zen state thinking of all the possible placements for upcoming blocks. Love this game as it is, all it needs is more updates to the word list. If the dev wanted to add more themes/missions/modes I would absolutely keep revisiting it as well. Writer's Block is a big recommend for anyone that likes puzzle or word games. The gameplay really satisfies a specific part of my brain and it just feels great to play!
I love a good word game and this is just that and more! The ability to hold onto letters helps to add a spicy new twist to this game and get my brain going! Can't wait to play more!
BOOOOOORIIIIING. Hey, can you throw every vowel at me with no consonants and no variety between the vowels? I love getting five I's, ten U's, and seven O's in a row.
I am surprised I haven't seen this concept done until now tbh. Pretty neat!
This is like playing hatris at jack nicholson's house Needs Gex as a word 4/5
I saw this game and was totally drawn in by the font, the colours, the whole vibe. I've only played once so far but already feel addicted!
