I bought this game to beat Dunkey's score. I am succeeding.
Writer's Block is a really fun game that is somehow both chill and relaxing while also being a frantic brain-engaging challenge. It's a novel blend of puzzle game genres, trying to focus on making words while also finding somewhere to put letters that don't seem immediately useful without blocking yourself off. I can tell that I have just scratched the surface; there are a lot of tricks and strategy to learn to make good use of letters and make chains and combos. I like how unlocking themes and completing missions helps to introduce you to the game and mechanics so that you can get to the point where you're competing against yourself and trying to improve your high score. The themes themselves are cool too, I like how dynamic they are with how they react to what you do, and each of them having their own song adds a lot of variety too. I'm excited to keep playing!
Gorgeous - the core loop is super enjoyable and strategically rewarding, & the aesthetic of the game and the themes are great. The obvious difficulty in bringing a canonically simple concept like this to life is the balancing and taming of the randomness of letter distribution - Having played quite a bit of endless, it seems like the vowel situation is a little overtuned. It feels like combos and chains are necessary to manage the amount of them, which is fine on its own, but combined with the (in my opinion) overly strict wordlist, becomes too much (The U in particular warps the entire game around it, strategy wise). A couple more short vowel-heavy and U-heavy words in the word list could make a world of difference on that front. Also I think the submit a word form is broken and doesn't lead anywhere. Otherwise no complaints.. have been loving going for high point runs and climbing the leaderboard!
I feel like this game is too expensive for what it is, but at the same time I enjoy it a lot and I feel like I'm gonna get many hours off the endless mode alone.
I saw dunkey play this on stream and knew I'd like it. Simple and addictive.
Doesn’t accept “SHART” but otherwise very fun
Very fun!!! When I played the demo I thought it would be extremely reliant on luck (i.e. "how could I possibly get rid of all these vowels?") and maybe I wasn't wrong exactly, but after spending a little more time with it I can see that a lot of strategy goes into the game too. I look forward to continuing to learn.
I bought this on a whim after watching a stream and have been really enjoying it. The game rewards flexible thinking and there's some fun risk/reward in setting up potential chains of words you might not get the letters to finish. I've mostly stuck with Endless mode and have found it a good activity for winding down while still keeping focused, almost like meditating. The puzzles are paired with charming music and beautiful backgrounds that respond to every acton. The snow bunny one is my favourite but I'm sure everyone will find one just for them. There's a form for suggesting more words and the dev is very responsive and solved an issue i was having in only a couple hours, so I can only see this game improving with time!
Well ain't this nifty! A nice tetris-like with a little scrabble DNA mixed in and you've got yourself Writer's Block! Simple enough idea that becomes quite engaging in practice with a fair difficulty that had me wondering if I was the idiot all along (spoiler alert: I was). The themes are a neat little touch with each having it's own music and reactions to the game as you play. It's a very chill aesthetic that is easy to forget as you get lost in the dictionary in your mind, frantically trying to think of something....anything that you can make with what you've got. Seems to work great on Steam Deck as far as I can tell, and as of this review, there's already been an update to adjust the frequency ratio of vowels to consonants, and I can tell a significant difference in letter distribution.
they're slick for doing this
