3D Realms is trash
My general rule for enjoying FPS games is unless the melee holds up to supplement the scarce ammo supply, then you have to have the melee feel good and be rewarding to use outside of the guns. This game breaks that rule and I cannot enjoy the game. The beginning guns you get are really bad as a first impression. The pistol has 0 feedback and feels like a genuine pea shooter. The double barrel has a really tight spread despite it being a shotgun. You run out of ammo pretty quickly and constantly for all guns especially the spike machine gun. The melee somehow is inaccurate, takes a while to build up momentum, and puts you at risk of losing a ton of health if you are out of ammo. Enemies have a semi large health pool, and the zombie characters somehow can still attack you without their head, (it'd be a funny gag if it only happened once in a while). The other enemies like the houndeye thing that shoots lasers at you have a death animation that spins around the room after you kill them and damages you if you are too close, annoying. There are bipedal enemies that explode into green gas explosions that damage you if you melee them or they die close to you. This game has hit the real annoyance factor too many times in the first level, and the concept of the melee swing allowing you to get to secrets or other areas is cool, I can't justify playing the whole the entire game with how annoying everything else is. Either make the Platformer FPS or make the boomer shooter, don't combine them. It really sucks because i really enjoy the visual style of the game, but I just can't force myself to stick with it.
Nah.
I ended up really liking this, but I didn't at first. The game is split into 3 worlds, and the first is by far the weakest. The weapons you're given at the start a peashooters and your basic melee is the worst. One you get the hang of how stupidly strong your secondary melee attack is, things get a lot better. But still, it isn't until the second world that you get weapons that are far stronger than anything you had before. Ammo isn't too plentiful, but plentiful enough to where if you're not too wreckless you'll probable be fine. The third world especially is awesome. You're given even better tools that feels very fun to use. It's a shame that first world is a bit of a gatekeeper. It can be seen in Steam achievements too. Less than 10% make it past the first world. A similar theme is present for level design. The first world is alright but a little same-y. Levels are ok and not too maze like. The second world, again, is far better. It's beautiful and maps are far more fun to traverse. That being said, some (if not all) of the levels are way too large. It's not one of those games where you are constantly trying to find where to go, but it does often feel like you're wandering around with some needless fodder. This again is far better in the third world, where everything really comes together. Awesome set pieces, awesome level design, just awesome all around. I really liked the game, but if every level was a good 30-50% smaller I would have appreciated it more.
pros: Huge levels with lots of surprise encounters. You have to use the right weapons for each enemy to conserve ammo. Lots of pistol sniping and door funneling.
great game
Yeah, this is a lot of fun. I am more happier I waited for a sale though, Usually I like to only spend around $15 or less on these types of games. It helps me enjoy them more when I get them cheaper. Grab this while it's on sale, You will not regret it.
Questionable design choices here and there, and has the least fun pistol I've ever used in a game. Still very very fun. Wish there were more shotgun shells and fangs around the maps.
Not bad, not good. Just play something else. I was enjoying despite the flaws but the first boss on hard difficulty is so boring and annoying (bullet sponge that spam the same 2 attacks in circular room) that I gave up. Hard difficulty is just too many enemies and scarce ammo. I can play Doom Eternal in ultraviolence without issues but got tired of dying in this game.
