My Playtime: 17.2h (finished the game)
Intro
WORLD END ECONOMICA episode.02 is the second part of the WORLD END ECONOMICA trilogy, telling the story of Hal after what happened in the first series. It is a visual novel about the stock market and growing up. Pros: - A nice story about hope with a little fantasy added in Cons: - The story ends in a cliffhanger - Sometimes the translation is a bit off Specs Steam Deck: AMD Zen 2 4c/8t 2.4-3.5GHz, 16 GB RAM, 8 AMD RDNA 2 CUs
Should you buy this game?
Yes. If you know a bit about investing and plan to buy all 3 games, buy it on a sale.

In-Depth Review

Visuals
WORLD END ECONOMICA episode.02 uses anime-looking visuals. Even though the story happens on the lunar surface, the background still looks similar to current-day Earth with a little twist. It kinda fits the story narrative, though, and it doesn't look weird at all.
Story
As someone who hasn't played the first game, I didn't get some references on the story. The game gave a recap of what happened several times, but I still felt like I was missing out on something, especially when it tried to vaguely explain events that happened in the past. I'm not sure if it starts right after the first part ends, but the story starts a few years after the main event in the first part. The story was slow-paced at the beginning, to the point that I dozed off several times. Sometimes I even overslept. As someone who doesn't like slice-of-life visual novels, there are just too many mundane, day-to-day events that I don't find interesting and meaningful for the story. In fact, the main event won't even start until you are halfway to the story. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1334851668 In addition to the slow pacing, the story drags on. It seems to enjoy adding some lengthy dialogues before the main event. Sometimes, they even throw the same recap from the first part over and over whenever they have the chance. On the times that it didn't, I found that most dialogues were too boring. It was the reason why I slept a lot. If you are here to learn about investing, don't. It might teach you about some terms, but that's all there is to it. The story is best enjoyed if you are more experienced and familiar with those terms since some parts of the story will use those terms as part of their plan. Sometimes, I didn't even understand some of what the characters said, probably because of this. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=932227663 Some translations can be a bit off. Most of the time, it's just simple stuff like wrong pronouns. However, sometimes the game will explain things that can be hard to understand to some people, and the bad translation can make it hard to comprehend. That being said, the story starts to pick up near the end. I can't say it was that interesting, but I was hooked up a bit. There was tension and you can see how far determination and luck can go. Honestly, I was bummed out that the ending wasn't catchy because it was preparing for the finale, but I kinda like the character's growth shown in the end. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1614878926
The Game
Gameplay The game is playable on Steam Deck but with some limitations: you need to use the touchscreen to access some menus and the page up and down in the backlog wasn't pleasant to use. Sometimes, it works as you expect, sometimes it will scroll too fast, to the point that you'll miss the dialogue that you want to read. As a visual novel, it has most features that the game in this genre has: a backlog to read older dialogues, skip and auto mode for your reading convenience, and others. The issue is that I don't know how to use them in Steam Deck. There isn't a tutorial for the controls and you can't change the keybinding. Luckily, it wasn't hard to figure out the basic controls. Length and Replayability I finished the game in 17.2h. Since the story is linear and doesn't have multiple endings, you don't have to replay the game at all.
Conclusion
To be honest, I found WORLD END ECONOMICA episode.02 to be mediocre. It might be because I didn't know much about investing and played the game expecting to be taught that, or it might be because I didn't play the first game, or both. However, some things are clear: the pacing is slow and the story tends to drag on. That being said, it tries to fix the former in the finale, and I enjoyed it a bit at that. However, since the story ends on a cliffhanger and how it seems to be connected with the other two games, I recommend buying it only if you plan to get the trilogy but do it on a sale because of the issues I mentioned above.
It's okay.
After playing through the first episode, I wish there were a neutral review option for this one. I really like the idea of this episode taking place years after the amazing ending of the first episode, with Hal still carrying the weight of his failure, but I feel like all of the things that made the latter half of the first episode great were not present in this one. First, the development of the connection between Hal and Chris/Eleanor. Despite there being a large emphasis of the beginning and the ending towards Chris, honestly I could not give a ♥♥♥♥ about her. She wasn't interesting in the first episode given that she wasn't a main character, and, from the readers perspective, all of a sudden she's the star of Hal's life, even if it was just the sense of duty to pay her back on his end. Really, it would have been better if there was some sort of flashback or continuation of the first episode where it shows Chris and Hal becoming closer. Chris also never does anything in this episode, she just talks to Hal, cries, reminds Hal of Hagana and his past failure, and is generally just useless in terms of moving the plot forward. As for Eleanor, I honestly liked her character from the moment her motivations were revealed to the ending, she does draw a lot of parallels to Hagana, but that's also what I thought made Hagana a good character in the first episode; she wants a sense of purpose and justice in the cruel state of their lives, and when given the opportunity to make a difference, both of them went to an extreme to do so. Despite that, she isn't just a stand-in for Hagana, she has more extreme ways of moving toward her goal, and connected with Hal through wanting to achieve her dream rather than not wanting to be worthless. Second, the ending felt so disappointing compared to the first episode. I loved the ending of the first episode because it could stand alone as an ending, even if there were no other episodes, or it could lead into the next chapter of Hal's life. This ending is purely just a cliffhanger, and it felt very abrupt. Its very explicitly stated what the plan of action is to take down Avalon, even Chris seems to finally have some story significance after her confession to Hal, but then the episode just ends? Just an overall very unsatisfying ending. Finally, there just seems to be so many plot threads that lead absolutely nowhere. The whole company thing with Le Goff and Marco is just forgotten halfway through the story in exchange for the war on Avalon, and is never brought up again. Eleanor praying at the church is not brought up again past the initial moment they talk about it. Hal's talk about God and faith with Lisa nearing the end also isn't used after the initial conversation, even though it felt like a turning point within Hal's subconscious. Everything with Rena just felt completely pointless after Hal leaves the government job, and even the one moment that Rena actually contributed to the plot felt like that moment was the whole purpose of her character, to just exist to feed extremely convenient information to Hal, then to permanently ♥♥♥♥ off. She really couldn't have had a bigger role in starting the downfall of Avalon? She's literally a government worker, do something with that? Lastly, the talk with Toyama and analysts. That whole talk feels really meaningless if we are never told what Eleanor had to go through as an analyst for the top investment banking company on the entire Moon, other than that Eleanor had to abuse drugs to go to sleep. What was she treated like within the banking company? How much time did she spend actually being an analyst? Was her pay worth the suffering? Did acting as Susie Wu seep into her actual life? I know this episode is probably just build up and development to the third episode, but it really should be able to stand alone like the first episode did. I loved the first episode, but this one just isn't anywhere near as good as the first. 5/10
Writing is BAD.. why oh why did i get it..
