Wooden Sen'SeY

Nice platformer, with some good ideas, funny music, and some levels needing a lot of synchronization and patience.

Played and beat the DRM Free or Desura(remember that?) version back when I got it in the very first Groupees Build a Greenlight bundle ages and ages ago. I remember that it was pretty fun. Reviewing here now to offset some of the negative reviews - though let me know if the Steam version is somehow worse than the DRM Free/Desura version.

Some dude steals SeY bottles and barrels from the village and you play a cute alcoholic samurai desperately trying to retrieve them. The gameplay is rather simple: move, jump, attack, grappling hook and some form of "exploding jump" which is the "sauce" of the game. Additionally, you can grab some shurikens or bombs to throw at you enemies. The enemies have also very simple attacking patterns but when different types come mixed together you might need some agility. There are only 9 Stages, some of which are quite unique. The and the devs explored well the possible combinations of grappling, jumping and exploding jumping with the environment and you get a decent amount of challenge. There is also a time attack mode with 30 short challenges - those might require some thinking ahead! The achievements add an extra layer to the game: you have 3 accomplishment per stage (collect all SeY bottles, kill all enemies, finish faster than dev's time), plus beating all time attack with gold medals. It was not overly frustrating but actually kinda fun to do them. It reminded me classics like Crash Bandicoot and the Ank time attacks. Linux port was flawless too, thanks for supporting the penguin. Wooden Sen'SeY delivers what it promises and gives enough fun for a modest price.

Wooden Sen'SeY is a 2D platformer that looks to have been ported from mobile. You control a martial artist and fight black blobs, with a bit of platforming along the way. On the upsides, the graphics aren't retro pixel, and you can customise the controls (which is good, because they had Left as Q and Right as D). Gameplay isn't very good and the controls are sloppy. $10 is far too much for this kind of basic, ho-hum platformer in a sea of thousands.

I have played my fair share of platformers and honestly, however you may look at it, Wooden Sen'Sey is janky, unfair at times and not fun. Apparently, not every indie which came out during that period, was gold.
