What I expected: mecha battles. What I got: lots of walking. Looooooooooooots of walking. So much walking that the little bits of content I got started seeming insignificant in the face of it. After spending what, two in-game weeks walking through every screen and checking every object to see if there was any change or any reason at all that there was no fast-travel to skip all the walking, I was done. The story and characters seemed interesting, and I would like to learn more about them, but the game seriously needs:
*Fast travel *Visible indicator when there is no new interaction on an already checked object or person, such as fading the interactable, then raising it with an exclamation mark when there's something new.
Honestly, it felt like the game was set up to waste my time as a player rather than reward it, or punish me for not checking everything every day. "Oh, you didn't interact with x object on y day so you don't get z item." Maybe the game never does that, and maybe you eventually get a fast travel. Maybe I'll pick it up again someday and decide I like it after all, but I don't foresee that day anytime soon.
This game is a failure, but it's an accomplished failure that I would recommend if you're the kind of person who appreciates a good experience and is willing to put up with some aches along the way. The obvious selling point of this game is the style, which I would say is a cross between Cowboy Bebop and No More Heroes. Definitely has a vibe that is easy to get into. Everything else in this game is a mixed bag. The mecha fighting is serviceable, but pretty easy to break so that by the halfway point of the game there's not much left to challenge you. Doing chores to raise money is full of some fun mini games, but around the time they wear out their welcome you don't really have to do them anymore if you've been managing cash well so then that part of the game just falls off. Walking around all the time is time consuming and boring. The characters are all very engaging and interesting, but the story is much more interested in the vibes than in being narratively coherent. That's not always a problem, but there's just a few too many plot threads and character beats that never resolve to be fully satisfying. Rather than spend time resolving some of the games mysteries or the implied plots running under the surface you'll find your time chatting about what makes a good K Drama or engaging in an all you can eat contest. These sequences aren't bad, but when there's kind of a feeling in the game that some of it had to be left on the cutting room floor its sometimes odd to wonder why certain bits were left in as it feels shockingly both too long and too short. All and all it's a very ambitious fumble. But it's definitely much more interesting than a bland and uninspired failure. This is one where you can feel the intentions and some of what the creators wanted to convey. It's not my favorite game of all time, but compared to other games that I'll finish and never think on again this is one that will definitely hang out somewhere in the back of my thoughts, and I'm going to hold the time I took with it fondly.
6/10 I was a little disappointed by this game. First, this game has incredible qualities. The voice acting is great and perfectly matches each character. All the characters are great, even the training robot with its weird voice. Their 2D portraits were done in a anime art-style that I really liked. It reminded me a little of Cowboy Bebop. The dialogs were funny, witty, easy to read, yet well written. But, this game is so slow that it becomes tedious. After a while, it appears evident that the gameplay is stuck in a loop of extremely repetitive content. While this filler content isn't exactly bad, the game never seems to progress. I believe this game could have been at least three time shorter. What to expect I think the game is purposely misleading. It's not a bad thing, but it's better to adjust your expectations in advance. There are mechas, but the main subject is the characters. You live with them, you appreciate their colorful personalities and sometimes you learn snippets of their history. In short, it's the "slice of life" genre. 70% dialogs, 15% roaming the town and doing jobs (=short mini games), 15% mechas fights. The fights are too simple both in their difficulty and in their content. The writing is paradoxical. It's both very well written and also not telling much. Although the main tone is mostly joyful, energetic, the underlying message is quite different. It sometimes becomes apparent when the characters reveal a bit more of their feelings. It's both a funny game and one about all kinds of emotional turmoil. Some monologues are a bit too melodramatic. But even there, the writing and voice acting are very good. The ending is also very peculiar. Neither great, nor bad, but perfectly appropriate in its own way. And there are bugs. I've had three different kinds. The worst of them nearly broke my save... Despite everything, the experience was quite positive because I immediately became attached to most characters. But Wolfstride was so unnecessarily long that it squandered its potential.
This game unironically might be my favourite game of all time. It really is THAT good.
its like cowboy bebop the game
Wolfstride is a slow burn, from movement to combat to story but still pulls you through to the end with a fun story. The presentation of pixel art and a black and white art style is confusing since it don't really do anything for world building or having the premise being anything noir, but still a different choice that makes the game unique and adds a bit of grit I suppose. The mini games feel like they are made to not be played if you would like to have economy and not be bored out of your mind, but it would leave you out of necessary upgrades where the game can pick up in difficulty making this a heavy shortcoming for me. This game is a strange mashup but mostly technically sound, middling thumbs up for me.
PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
