This game is really ahead of its time, the graphics, voice acting, action and gameplay are unbeatable! This just might be the best game there is on steam, I am definitely recommending this for my friends! I'm gonna be exited for "Continuation war 1941", it would be an awesome sequel for this masterpiece. The historical accuracy is impeccable and this truly shows the evils of the soviet union during the war. Mannerheim would be proud!
As a Finn myself, I can say that this is THE most perfect, Realistic, heartwarming & BEST GAME EVER. ♥♥♥♥ THE COMMIES, KILL THE RUSSKIES! But we really need a sequel, maybe: ''Continuation War 1941''?

Developed and published by Thorium Game Lab, Winter War 1939 is an ambitious independent military action game that explores one of World War II's lesser-known conflicts: the Winter War between Finland and the Soviet Union. Rather than delivering a heavily scripted campaign, the game embraces a sandbox philosophy that allows players to participate in large-scale historical battles with considerable freedom. Built by a solo developer, it combines first-person shooting, tactical squad leadership, and strategic battlefield management into a single experience. Its goal is not only to recreate historical engagements but also to let players experiment with different approaches to combat while experiencing the harsh conditions that defined this conflict. The game stands out through its emphasis on massive battles and player choice. Instead of simply controlling a single soldier, players can command AI teammates, issue battlefield orders, and shift between leadership and direct combat whenever necessary. The command system allows squads to defend positions, follow orders, or launch attacks, creating battles that feel dynamic rather than scripted. Hundreds of AI soldiers can occupy the battlefield simultaneously, resulting in firefights that constantly evolve as infantry, armored units, artillery, and aircraft interact across large environments. This blend of tactical oversight and personal combat creates a distinctive gameplay style that appeals to players who enjoy both action and strategic planning. Historical authenticity plays an important role throughout the experience. The game recreates several notable Winter War battlefields inspired by real locations, including the Mannerheim Line, Suomussalmi, Raate Road, and Tolvajärvi. Vast snow-covered forests, frozen lakes, trenches, and defensive fortifications capture the unforgiving nature of Finland's winter landscape. Dynamic weather effects such as snowfall, changing temperatures, and strong winds further reinforce the atmosphere, making the environment feel like an active participant in every battle rather than a simple backdrop. The expansive maps encourage players to explore, flank enemy positions, and develop tactics that take advantage of the terrain. Vehicle gameplay significantly broadens the game's scope. Players are not restricted to infantry combat and can operate a wide selection of historically inspired military equipment. Tanks, armored vehicles, artillery, transport trucks, aircraft, sleds, and even specialized snow vehicles provide different methods of approaching objectives. Piloting fighters or bombers offers a completely different perspective on the battlefield, while commanding armored vehicles changes engagements into slower, more tactical encounters. The ability to freely transition between different roles gives every mission a strong sense of variety and keeps the gameplay from becoming repetitive. Another notable feature is the game's sandbox design. Beyond historical battles, players can create custom scenarios, gather resources, construct fortifications, and deploy additional equipment to influence the flow of combat. These mechanics encourage experimentation, allowing players to build defensive positions before launching offensives or strengthen captured areas against enemy counterattacks. This level of flexibility gives Winter War 1939 greater replay value than many traditional military shooters, as no two battles necessarily unfold the same way. As impressive as its ambitions are, the game also reflects the limitations of a solo-developed project. Character models, animations, and visual effects are functional rather than cutting-edge, and players may encounter occasional technical issues, inconsistent AI behavior, and performance fluctuations during particularly large battles. Some mechanics require patience to master, while certain systems could benefit from additional refinement. However, these shortcomings are balanced by the sheer scale of the simulation and the obvious passion invested in recreating an overlooked chapter of military history. Audio presentation contributes positively to immersion, with authentic weapon effects, battlefield sounds, and voice work helping to create the feeling of participating in an active war zone. While the presentation may not rival big-budget military titles, it succeeds in delivering a convincing atmosphere that complements the game's historical setting. The combination of environmental audio and weather effects enhances the tension during prolonged firefights and reinforces the harsh realities of winter warfare. Winter War 1939 is a game driven by ambition more than polish. It successfully delivers a rare historical setting, impressive battlefield scale, and an engaging mix of first-person combat, vehicle operation, and tactical command that few independent projects attempt. Although technical roughness and AI limitations occasionally interrupt the experience, the game's depth, freedom, and dedication to historical authenticity make it a rewarding experience for players interested in military history and large-scale sandbox warfare. Those willing to overlook its imperfections will find an original and highly ambitious war game that offers countless opportunities for experimentation and replayability. Winter War 1939 delivers an engaging blend of historical authenticity, strategic freedom, and large-scale combat that distinguishes it from conventional World War II shooters. Despite its technical flaws and modest production values, its expansive battlefields, diverse gameplay systems, and unique portrayal of the Winter War make it a worthwhile experience for fans of tactical action and historical military simulations. Rating: 7/10
Such a cool game bogged down by a plethora of game breaking bugs. Its a mobile game and you can tell, considering the dev made zero effort into making it function properly on PC. I mean this is just ridiculous. This has to be the buggiest game Ive ever played.
Когда бомблю финов на душе спокойно становится. Разработчик, поажлуйста, измени физику самолетов, просто когда я касаюсь верхнего слоя рулем и подыхаю или когда стреляю во врага, а он отбрасывается на километр вниз как-то не очень
