Wings of Empire

Great AVN, still impressed by this dev! I can't wait for the next installment!

This is a superbly-written AVN with a good story (possibly a great one, but it isn't finished at the time of this review) that takes place in a milscifi setting in an alternative timeline where the Roman Empire brought humanity to a spacefaring future, along with the Chinese, called the Han, who have the Japanese in tow. It's a sandbox and has skippable minigames, and both of these aspects are serviceable rather than superb, but complaining about them would be like complaining that the seats are uncomfortable at a concert: a valid concern, but irrelevant to the quality of the music. The characters are all friendly, which I think defines the type of AVN it is. Some people prefer interpersonal drama to be the focus, and this isn't that: the threats are external, and there's some tension between characters but they're all pulling in the same direction. The hyper-competitive trope character does exist, which would normally put me off, but here it's dealt with very well. I'm sure that character is someone's favourite. Each of the women has a personality that's developed and unique. There's a lot of focus on names. One character you can call by three different names, with different levels of formality, and different implications to your mood depending on which you use. Even minor characters tend to have at least two names, e.g. there's Selene, the XO, who's Ma'am, but don't call her that at the bar. There are a lot of love interests, and they tend to fall in one of two categories: either it's the union of two equals (the phrase 'apex predator' comes up a lot) or the woman eagerly submits to the MC. Droid has his milscifi banter down pat, and it's impossible to tell that he has less experience with it than your average 'used to be in the US Navy' milscifi author. The Legion turns out to be the Marine Corps. He is as much at ease with Roman power structures expressed through various Latin words and phrases, each with a tooltip explaining its role in the universe when it appears. Rome seems to have lost her Greek cultural base, but this may be because Droid thought it would be too confusing to introduce a Greek as well as Latin lexicon. It's an interesting universe and an interesting take on what I will always think of as the Love of Magic formula. Droid has indicated there will be three books in total for the whole story, and we're at (probably) Act 4 of 6 in the first at the time of this review, so there are all kinds of places for the story to go, and already indications that it'll turn into something special.

An amazing sci-fi game. Great story telling and unique characters. Combat takes a bit getting used to but is enjoyable. sandbox while waiting for more story was an unexpected surprise. I fully recommend this game

Here we see the very promising hope of a trilogy at least equaling Love of Magic. This first part is not yet finished or perfectly polished but as is it's already really good. The characters are top notch ! Their banter quirky, I burst into laughter a lot here. Like Droid's previous games the world building is amazing and you feel it exists.

It is pretty good. It has a story. I like the setting and world-building. I set the game play to story mode because the game play is lame and I'm really only interested in the story anyway. Seems a bit grindy. I'm sure I'd hate it that much more if I had to grind through the mini-games as well. You still have to play them, but story mode is super easy as advertised. There are 'adult' scenes. The ones I've unlocked were not to my tastes and fortunately easily avoided or skipped through. In fact they all seem to be optional, so well done for that.

It's good! There's nothing I don't like about it, and if I had to invent something that counts as criticism, it would only be that it's not AS GOOD as Love of Magic or Morningstar. If you don't go into it expecting it to be like those titles you will probably enjoy it very much!

This game require space animations polishing and have a quetionable design in some parts. Everything other in good shape.

Droid games have plots and action that puts them at the top of my list of good games. These games also have some romance and relationship building which is more important than just sex scenes that mean nothing. A few girls that want a quick hookup is believable but every girl yo meet acting that way just not real. It ruins immersion and turns it into a joke.

My game time is high because I got better at understanding the game and re-started a couple times. You will want a mouse for this game because of the space combat even though it is a Visual Novel.(AVN). A strange technical quirk (or maybe just my computer?) the game ALWAYS starts behind the Steam page, meaning I have to minimize both and then re-open them in the correct order to see things. No big deal but strange. Anyway, 'Wings of Empire" basically sets you in an Alternate History where the Roman Empire never fell and continued 700 years past NOW, with a "space opera" feel. You play as an experienced Roman soldier whose leg was blown off in combat, so you and your bionic leg sign up for the Navy as a fighter pilot. There's plenty of Adult content but not constant like some games AND you can choose whether to do a "harem" route or "monogamous" route by clicking a toggle with each woman you meet. Not all of them are available however. This game is in Early Access BUT includes a good amount of content already. Four Acts covering 75 "days" The plot is interesting and fun but re-play value is a matter of opinion. If YOU consider "re-play" value as "I can start a new game and discover new plots, stories etc" you would be disappointed in WoE. IF YOU consider re-play value as " This game I enjoy re -playing because it's so GOOD even though I know what happens, this game is a "must have". The developer plans a three part story with each being as long as this one. WELL WORTH THE MONEY .
